    Yeah Iím on a comeback trail that began in January. Iím sort of the same in that Iím just building back a base. Not a lot of pace stuff, not a lot of speed stuff for right now. I want to make it through the LCM season and use it as a fitness phase. Once September/October rolls around, Iíll start really trying to work the speed angle. I too wasnít much of a sprinter growing up, in college, or beyond, except when called upon to answer the bell on a relay. Case(s) in point: Iíve split 29.5 LCM 50 breast on a relay, but wasnít much under 31 with a 30.8 lifetime best flat start. In college I was 21.6 on a 200 free relay, mid season. Never been below 22.6 flat start. Some of that is relay takeoffs, but I just canít naturally sprint. I need a relay to really get me juiced up.

    @Jeff I am also holding off on weight lifting for now. I do my Total Body Conditioning class and my CORE7 class once a week each, but given how sluggish LCM swimming already feels, and given that the back half of the 2017-2018 SCY season came when I was only just starting to swim again, I passed on weights figuring they would slow my process of finding a feel for the water again. Come September, Iíll get back to weights.

    I did find much success doing CrossFit with the club team back from 2012-2014!

    Eh...it's not really a philosophy I subscribe to. I respect there is more than one way to skin a cat when it comes to swimming training. I can appreciate that people like Michael Andrew and Josh Davis have found so much success using USRPT as their sole training regiment, but I don't buy into it being part of a worldwide revolution.

    When Blair invites me to train with him, if he is doing an USRPT set, I will happily partake. But as for incorporating more of it into my workouts, I doubt it. For me, I will stick to what has worked for me for years: a solid load of aerobic work interspersed with anaerobic and VO2 MAX sets when needed. My plan is to get up and race at least once a week this summer. So last week, with no meet to swim in, I did the 6x100 @ 5:00 from the blocks. This weekend I will do another dive set. Then the next two weeks I have meets I am swimming in.

    I will add that individual USRPT sets, by themselves, can be great training tools for me. I use them myself and used them when I was a college coach. I just didn't use them day in and day out as the sole method of training. Also I don't like the "no toys" policy. I love my toys. As one can see from my workouts, I incorporate most of my mesh bag's contents into each practice.

    Are you going to do more USRPT with Blair? I'd like to see how that looks, might be good to integrate that into my training when I get back to racing season in the fall.

    Paddle straps I find last the least amount of time. I am replacing those every month or two. Paddles themselves (I use level 1 "green" Strokemakers) have broken over time, usually beginning with a slow warping/bending in the direction that I pull, and eventually splitting (starting right between the straps the middle finger slides into). Nowadays, when I see the fracture start to form, I toss the paddle and get a new one. I carry like 4-5 "blank" paddles in my bag so that I can quickly swap out broken ones. I find them littering the area BEHIND the pool deck at the end of each summer.

    I did something similar with some snorkels as well. Since you used to swim with LRAD, you might remember the metal equipment bins full of dirty discarded equipment that they had at UALR. The aquatic director, a few years ago, got tired of them sitting on the deck and emptied them out. He piled all the snorkels up for kids to claim, but no one took any. After about 2 weeks I asked if I could have them. Took them all home, disassembled them, soaked them in Simple Green (figured if my fraternity brothers could use it to clean heavy resin out of their bongs, it could clean mold out of snorkels!), ran them through the dishwasher, and reassembled them. I then passed them out to my high school swimmers I coached. Basically got a team's worth of snorkels for free. The ones beyond repair I took for my graveyard of parts to repair my snorkel every time it needs maintenance.

    My equipment bag is extremely varied - I think my pullbuoy is from club swimming sometime, kickboard was given to me at a swim camp when I was about 14. Goggles come from all over the place. I never did have my own snorkel before - college team had enough for everybody and coach would disinfect them every year and pass them back out to the new freshmen. Unfortunately my fins, paddles and all my suits dry rotted or otherwise fell apart during my 6 year hiatus, so I had to replace all that stuff.

    I still have 4 standard issue items from my very first day of college swimming:

    1) my drag suit (which is mostly in tatters but still wearable...although not as a stand alone suit anymore!)...(It doesn't look anything like it did in my avatar picture from '05)

    2) my goggles (just the UV brown Swedish goggle lenses...the straps I replace every 6-9 months)

    3) my mesh bag (which I forgot to return before graduation but no one seemed to care)

    4) my snorkel (which has been repaired by pirating pieces from other snorkels many times, but having coached swimming for 6 years and seeing snorkels come and go, none of them have stood the test of time like the original FINIS v1.0 snorkel. I have never managed to nibble through the mouthpiece, it stays clean, and the straps never broke!)

    Needless to say, I love to snorkel.

    I should add, on a note about equipment, that I have some other college items and some stuff that even predates college:

    - kick board (borrowed from MAC's kick board bin when they used to use Davidson's pool)
    - tube (this silly black tire thing, looks like it belongs on a tricycle. Was a "gift" from my club coach from back in junior year of high school, where, for 2 months, he went on a "tubing" obsession...think he got the idea from an ASCA conference)
    - "pull buoy" (not the one I use currently. As a tribute to its longevity, I still have both Styrofoam "cylinders" from my old old school pull buoy. The cord has long since fallen apart so the buoy can no longer be used. This was my first piece of equipment I ever got for swimming, and it was when I was nine years old. It lasted through college and fell apart, finally, about 20 years after first getting it!)

    Yeah lactic hold sucks. Necessary evil I learned to tolerate a few years ago. Its like "active recovery" on steroids. During round 2 I was thinking "You are self-coaching here. You could have chosen any set you wanted and you chose to do this?"

    This looks brutal. Of course I can't make 100s on the 1:15, but even if I adjust that interval so it is doable, if I understand the "spirit" of the thing correctly, it looks simply awful. Good work!

    David,

    AE means aerobic. Whatever speed/pace I could hold indefinitely. V.S. stands for "variable sprint". These can be done a couple of different ways:

    version 1: #1 - half fast/half EZ, #2 - half EZ/half fast, #3 - all EZ, #4 - all fast
    version 2: #1 - build up to fast, #2 - just the opposite of #1 (start fast and slow down through the distance), #3 - half EZ/half fast, #4 - half fast/half EZ

    I have been doing version 2 for the most part in recent months. There are other versions floating around out there also (you may already do something similar or the same but know it by a different name).

    I can't even do a 200 fly short course so I applaud you for stepping up and doing it LCM. I still have vivid memories of my one and only LCM 200 fly as a kid and will never do it again. That is one tough double. Nice job.

    O.0 I just read that thread. I will say that I RARELY do an underwater set with no supervision. For instance, in the winter, the SCY pool here has a bubble over it and is "swim at your own risk". During the spring/summer, the LCM pool is also "swim at your own risk". I wouldn't attempt any underwater stuff (the above set, Rouse 100s, etc.)if there was no coach or lifeguard or SOMEONE on the deck whose job it was to (at least occasionally) watch me.

    All that being said, I try to push myself on hypoxic/underwater work by speeding up intervals but limiting underwater time. Gone are the days of me doing the old 25^3 (an old underwater hockey training set, 25x25 @ :25 w/ fins under H2O all fast).

    So on the 400/300/200 I flipped at both ends for each 25 under H2O. I felt like I was about to pass out by the end of each distance. On the 100s, I did 4/6/2 turns off every wall (4 FL kicks, 6 FR kicks, and 2 strokes before taking first breath).

    Stewart - I have not really made much in the way of meet plans for this summer yet. I have a couple of things potentially going on outside the pool with might limit my training/meet travel. We have two LCM meets here in Little Rock, one May 9-11, and another July 11-13. I may swim in those (with the July one a possible taper meet). I will keep you posted, but for the foreseeable future, I won't be travelling much outside the state of Arkansas.
