    I only copied the top 5 out of my age group, but it was one of the most contested age groups out there. I was flat out exstatic about my time. I dropped 7 seconds from my previous masters best, and held very consistent splits throughout the race, including winning my heat (2nd to last heat). As it turns out, Kirk Nelson and I split almost identical races, though we competed in different heats...weird.

    This one was just rough. I was exhausted before stepping on the blocks. Couldn't get revved up in the fly, floundered in the middle 200, and just tried to beat all the other fellow USMS members to the wall in the freestyle leg of the race.

    Kirk and I did finish up the day with a celebratory run down the waterslides though!!

  2. Friday, May 18, 2012 Pre-Meet Splash around

    I decided I'd get up like a normal day this morning and get my shaving done with (since I'm staying in my coach's motorhome over the weekend and won't have access to shaving facilities).
    After than I headed over to Masters practice to say a last goodbye to everyone there, and then got on the road to Kelowna. B.C.
    I made it across the border crossing ok, though it was confusing trying to navigate through the various roadways/gates they had there. I tried not to look too obvious.

    I got here in time to be able to count for my two teammates from Wenatchee in the 1500, and then got two PB&J sandwiches for lunch (That Guy's special meal), then headed back in to count for KNelson's 1500. he did very well, but I'll leave his details private for him to tell.
    Everyone swam very well. 100IMs and 50 Backs are going right now. Sprint events...BAH!!!!

    I did get in for a good warmup swim in the pool.

    200 Free
    500 IM (100 Fly Drill, then 50 Fly EZ, 50 Fly strong)
    the rest of the IM was 50 EZ, 50 Strong, trying not to run others over (it's not my fault...I was doing backstroke!!)
    300 Freeish

  4. Sunday, April 22, 2012 USAS Pentathalon Meet Results

    I played my "Master's swimmer" card for this meet, and only signed up for one of the three days of the meet.

    This was a Triple Pentathalon Meet, which was a good setup. Most of the kids did all three of the pentathalons.
    Friday night was the sprint version 50s of all strokes, plus a 100 IM (not worth my time).
    Saturday was a middle version 100s of all strokes, plus a 200 IM (doable, but still not my style)
    Sunday was the distance version 200s of all strokes, plus a 400 IM

    This looked to be the least populated day of the whole weekend after looking at the results of previous days. It was still good, and I had ample rest time between events, especially since they ranged all ages from 8 & U to 15 & Over. Almost too much rest, since I took a power nap between the 200 Back and 200 Breast.

    Not too bad. A week after my taper meet and still able to go quick. It was a bit rough though.

    I didn't really have the incentive to go after this race like I really wanted to. Still did fine, but wish I could do it over.
    ** I didn't really go out that fast. They were doing dive-over starts at the meet, and I'm sure the person was exiting the water late and set off the pad.

    30.45 / 29.30 <--This only picked up because I raced a guy to the finish that I saw across the pool (and beat him).


    They did an podium style awards ceremony for all age groups in the pentathalon events each day. This was really cool. I could tell all the kids loved being able to get up on the podiums with their medals around their necks like they'd just won the Olympics.
    In the 15 & Over division, I ended up with the 2nd place award.
    The 16 year old in first place was 1 minute 12 seconds ahead of me on total time, and the 3rd through 6th place guys were all pretty close behind me, so it was a close race. I was thrilled to end up in 2nd place overall.
    I had lots of compliments from parents and officials about how I was doing, especially coming to swim on the "hard" day. That's just my style.

    Now it's just time to train for about 4 weeks plus 1 week taper before heading to Canadian Nationals.

    This is going to be classified as my "meet of a lifetime." Definitely happy with this one, and it has to rank as my #1 or near #1 best masters meet.

    I did a quick reshave (since I had 2 weeks of stubble growth) this morning before loading the two older kids in the car to come with me on the 3 hour trek across the mountains to the west side of Washington.

    For meet warmups, I ended up being first one to touch the water after the official opening of warmups. (Sorry That Guy...you can't win them all...and no excuses about not even being there either ) I decided to do somewhat of the same warmup that I've been doing lately at practices.
    Did:
    1 x 100 Free, then found the paceclocks...
    4 x 100 Free @ 1:30 (went 1:04, 1:02, 1:02, 1:00)
    I was a little shocked by these "warmup" 100s. It didn't even feel like I was putting out much effort to go this fast either. Maybe a good sign...
    Did about another 500 of strokework stuff, and 2 sprint 25 Flys off the blocks. Good to go...


    400 IM - 4:30.27 - Masters best by 3+ seconds
    I just missed the LMSC age group record by 0.7 seconds (4:29.48) Dang! I should've had this record, and afterward I knew how I could've done it too! I was frustrated, even though it was a best time. Grrrrr....

    200 Back - 2:11.09 - Masters best by 4.8 seconds!
    Very unexpected greatness here. This was at most 16-17 minutes after my exit of the 400 IM swim (added times in the heat sheet) I think I had no expectations on the swim, and that's why it did so well.
    The results sheet was missing for the mens 200 Back on the wall, but I remember what KNelson got off the board:

    worked my pullouts, and swam like hell. Made it to just past the 15 meter mark off the dive pullout (not that the 15 Meter rule matters in breaststroke)

    This first 50 was also a 50 best time for me.

    I know how it feels to swim great and be crushed by almost 4 seconds in a 50!! I also missed the timing on the last stroke at the turn...possible could've broke 26

    200 Free (FLY) - 2:04.60 - Masters best by 1.7 seconds, but I'll have to prove it again in the 200 Fly event!

    Very happy with this swim! Where did it come from as well? 5th event in the series and did great! I just love racing this in the 200 Free event, because I can get some good competition from the freestylers.

  6. Sunday, April 1, 2012 NW Zone Day 2 results

    This morning was a rough morning. I slept well, in fact, very well. I've always had a rough 2nd day at this particular meet, and now I know why. The elevation difference and the body somewhat trying to acclimate to it.
    I learned this last year when I went to Salt Lake City for a 2 day meet. Well...short story version: I was talking with the college coaches for the cross country teams at the airport about competition at altitude, and they said through their research that individuals from lower altitudes that go to higher altitudes have a much better chance of doing well, IF they can make the commute and compete on the same day. The longer your body stays there, the harder it gets...for a while. They said it takes almost 2 weeks for your body to become 90% or more accustomed to the thinner air. So...if possible, try to schedule your trips to compete the same day as travel, or just forget the 2nd day!

    Last night at the Inland NW annual meeting, the Wenatchee Valley Masters cleaned house on the awards that were given out. We had:
    • High Point Female (season total) - Carolyn Magee
    • High Point Male (was a race between myself and another older teammate). The other guy ended up getting the award. - Jack Bevier
    • Most Dedicated Award - James Adams - for taking on the Top Ten and Records and improving on it. My "work" in the forums of promoting swimming and talking about us "little guys" in the Inland NW, in addition to my extensive travel looking for other places to compete outside of the LMSC. I've also newly taken on the webmaster position for the LMSC, which is going to be a pain in the butt for a while, till I learn the system.
    • Most Inspirational Award - Peony Munger - many of you remember her story of the miles of butterfly over the past year, in addition to her battle of Pancreatic Cancer (she has outlived the doctor's estimate by over 6 months already). Through all her chemo treatments and everything she's been going to, she hasn't missed a practice that she was available to get to. She really loves her team, teammates, and the sport of swimming. It was a very happy occasion.
    • Overall Season Team Points Championship - Wenatchee Valley Masters
    Can't really do any better than that as a team in the LMSC! Now we just have to try to improve on that over the next year!

    I was happy that I broke 6:00 with this, which was my goal. After all the talk last night at the meeting with the Inspirational Award, I wanted to do a 500 Fly for Peony to actually witness in person. She wasn't able to see my 1000 Fly swim last fall, so this was a perfect opportunity.
    Originally, I was going to go for the LMSC record in the 500 Free (5:06), but I just wasn't feeling it today anyway, so that made it easier to do fly as well.

    100 Fly - 56.68 Masters Best Time by 0.2 seconds
    Not bad for coming after the 500 Fly either. I had to chase Ian Mosher from PNA who ended up going a 51.98!! WOW!!

    200 Free - 2:00.29 - shouldn't have swum this. I could barely even haul myself to the blocks for the race...but I don't like to skip events. At least I held my splits. I think I'm going to stay away from freestyle events for a while. Just not feeling it either.

  7. Saturday, March 31, 2012 NW Zone Day 1 Results

    Approximately a 4 hour drive turned into a hair over 3 1/2, so the day started off well! ...and no speeding ticket either (which my little ol' truck couldn't hardly make it past 70 anyway even downhill with the wind!)

    80 people signed up for the meet, which is the 2nd highest attendance we've had at an Inland NW meet, so that was cool to see.

    We had to wait through 2 heats of 1650s prior to the 400 IM (1 was 44 minutes, the other 31 minutes), then a 12 minute first heat of the 400 IM as well. I was out of warmups for almost 2 hours prior to my swim. As far as re-warming up in the separate tank...NO WAY! That pool is damn near 88-89 degrees! Seriously! They say it is for therapy for the seniors that use the facility. But why not turn off the heater for this weekend??

    400 IM - 4:34.5 - about 1 second slower than my best from last month.
    This was my 2nd fastest 400 IM as a master though, so that is a plus!
    My fly was ok, but I couldn't get rolling like normal. Backstroke felt great! Probably from the shave. Breaststroke, I started feeling the burn in my arms, and I just had nothing left for the freestyle.
    I'm not sure of any of my splits, but I'm pretty sure I was on track to come close to the 4:29 record...till the freestyle. I tightened up so badly and just gave it my best effort. I didn't look at the clock throughout the race, and after painfully finishing and seeing that I missed the record I was trying for, it hurt even more.

    I've got a re-do opportunity for this at PNA Champs in 2 weeks.

    200 Fly - 2:06.30 - dropped 0.07 seconds!! Good enough for a new LMSC record!
    This felt ok, but I know I can go faster. I think someone said I was out in a 58-high, then 1:33 at the 150. I'm gonna guess on splits: 27mid, 31, 34.5, 33. That's about how it felt too. The middle 100 definitely felt like BLAH, and I gave it everything I had on the final 50. At least I had a time drop. And I have one more shot at this event in the USAS meet 3 weeks from now in Spokane!

    400 Free Relay, 3:37.11 was the anchor leg, split a 52-low or so. Decent enough for me. We combined different guys together from 3 ouf our workout groups (that are all in the same USMS club) to destroy the old NW Zone 18+ 400 Free relay record. Wait...just checked the PNA website for the NW Zone records...apparently a faster relay was done in late February that wasn't in my list. OOPS. Oh well, so at least we annihilated our Inland NW record, but missed the current Zone record.

    Tomorrow:

    500 Free, 100 Fly, 200 Free, 200 IM.
    The 100 Fly and 200 Free events will have some stiff competition. The 500 Free and 200 IM I will be doing time trial type swims. I have an outside shot at the LMSC record in the 500, so I just need to get my butt moving. 5:06.75! YIKES!

    Also going to combine with other workout groups for the 200 Mixed Medley and 400 Mixed Medley Relays, to attack the NW Zone records. These are possible!

    I woke up extra early (4:30am) for this one, but luckily had my dad along as taxi driver. I was able to sleep for almost the first two hours of the trip which was nice!

    Being that this meet is SCM, I am now in a new age group (35-39)

    1500 Free - 19:32.29 (New LMSC Record by 19 sec)
    Will definitely re-do this one at a later date.


    Split Requests:
    • 400 Free - 4:40.41 (new LMSC record by 0.01)
    • 800 Free - 9:36.00 (new LMSC record by 26 sec)
    • shut it down after this. I was hurting in my ribs and my breathing. My leg was a little sore as well. I normally wouldn't have thrown in the towel on a SCM 1500, but the way I was feeling, I'm glad I made a good 800 before "quitting".
    • That Guy had a super great 1500 (I claim being his rabbit for 800 meters to get him started!)
    I did two 200 Free Relays here. One was all men's event, and the other was a mixed relay. I don't know my splits, but probably 26+/27- or so.




    200 Free - 2:08.02 - New LMSC Record (by 0.5 seconds)
    • T.G. said I was out in 1:01.7 or so, so to come back in 1:06.3 is pretty good. I felt like garbage on the last 150 of the race, so I was surprised to see my good time!
    100 Breast - 1:16.58 - New LMSC Record (by 4 seconds) (Best Time also)
    • Did this out of selfishness. Not my event, but the record was an easy one so I had to take it.
    200 Back - 2:33.87 - (New LMSC Record by 8 seconds)
    • I did my same backstroke start as the last meet, similar to how you push off for repeats on intervals in practice. I can dolphin kick past most people anyway off the start, and there is no chance of slipping on my poor backstroke starts.
    • Had to kick it into 4th gear for my final 50. I actually did a few SDKs off the last 2 turns, and kicked like hell, and spun my wheels. It looked like what y'all call "backstroke". I only did this in an attempt to not get chicked by a 20 year old backstroker.
    • I beat her by 0.02 at the touch, and celebrated too!!
    200 Fly - 2:24.37
    • No record (this one's tough 2:22.02), but I'll get it one day.
    • This event was more butter-struggle that butterfly for me today. In the shape I was in, and being the 5th event of the day, I was sore and tired.
    • After the first 50 I knew this was going to get tough. I started breathing every stroke WAYYYY too early into the race. This is a sign for trouble for me.
    • I tried to power home at the end, and dead tired I raised my head to see my time. Then I felt better seeing a 2:24.

    Other special news from the meet:

    New National records were set
    • 25 - 29 Female 50 Back, Diana MacManus went 28.92, smashing the old record of 30.something!!
    • She just misssed the masters W.R. by 0.12!! dang!
    • She made an attempt at the 100 Back as well, and came up short of the N.R. by 0.3 seconds! dang dang!!
    • 90 - 94 Female 200 Breast, Charlotte Sandoval of Montana set new National Record...and she may have a few more...still need to check.

    This morning started off extra early like most swim meets I have to drive to. Only this morning I had to get on the internet to check the pass reports to see if it was even going to happen today. The Cascade Mountains were getting dumped on with feet of snow over the past few days, and they were have a few issues up there as well. Luckily the pass further north (and the shortest route for me) was open with snow tires required...not a problem. Off to the meet!

    400 IM - 4:33.65 Masters best time by 1.5 seconds!!

    Honestly I felt miserable before this race today. Probably from the 3+ hours in the car, and possibly the heat in the pool area as well felt a little warm (and stuffy). I just couldn't fully relax prior to the race, but still ended up doing great!!
    I have approx 4 seconds to drop for the age group record with a shave and taper at the end of March for the LMSC champs meet. Should be doable...now where should I take the 4 seconds? Easy answer is 1 sec. per stroke.

    100 Fly - 57.29 - anything in the low 57 range is good enough for me

    I had a great race with That Guy in this one, though I didn't know it till after the race. We basically were the same throughout the race, with him beating me by 0.04. (and his 50 Fly event later was AMAZING!!)

    Not bad, actually felt pretty good. All of my 200 Flys have been consistent lately holding in the 2:07 range +- a second or so.

    I wasn't too sure how I would be swimming today's events after all the things that were happening in my life the past couple of weeks. I really didn't have consistently good distance training, and I was, and still am, a complete headcase thinking about everything with my son. In a way, I think this actually made my swims easier today, because I had no big ambitious goals to worry about, just get out and swim.

    1650 Free: 19:39.71
    Not really a decent time, but I wasn't going for the 1650 time. I did a 1000 split request and was finally able to break my LMSC age group record!
    1000 Free Split: 10:44.62 <-- best time by 9 seconds! Beat the record by 4.5 seconds. I was able to watch the splits of my race on the big clock during the race, and around the 300/400 point, I felt pretty good, and realized I may have a shot at breaking the record. Really started to hurt about 800 yards or so, but finished it strong. Honestly the hardest part was HAVING to finish the 1650 race in order for the time to count.

    I now know why this 1000 hurt so much more than my last 1650 a year ago. I was holding 1:05s today, when I was doing primarily 1:07s for my last 1650. The question is, could I have been able to keep it going for the entire 1650? No one will ever know, but I just mentally wasn't ready for a 1650 today. I almost swapped it for a different event at the last minute, but decided against it...good thing I kept it!

    Swam the 4th leg of the 200 Free Relay here (no pressure, just EZ, probably about a :26 split)

    Who says you have to be shaved and tapered to do a best time in one of your better events?? I've got a full beard, hair all over, inconsistent training for the past couple weeks, and here is the result! I was very happy with this one.

    100 IM - 1:00.05
    Almost!! So close to getting under, while I've done it before, it's always a little when you're so close like that!

    50 Back (relay lead-off split) - 29.53 this is a best time as well, even though I don't swim the 50 Back that often, I'll still count it.

    50 Fly on the 200 Mixed Medley Relay - went fast (I'd guess low 26 or so), had to run down another team (just because it's called RACING!!)

    50 Fly - 26.18
    This was good. I finally figured out (on the 2nd 25) that in a 50 you have to release the water earlier in the stroke and turnover quickly to start pulling again. Spin those wheels!! I hate 50s!!!

    500 Free - 5:39.xx just swam it easy. I was exhausted by this point. I did bring home the last 50 with a 29.09 50 Fly split.

    Overall, it was a very good meet for me.

    Wow, what a day, and it's not over yet. The party is starting in about 30 minutes. I will join them soon as I'm not driving home in the same day today. Apparently the COMA masters stand for Consume Our Mass quantities of Alcohol (not Central Oregon Masters Assoc. like many thought).

    Woke up at 5:00am and was out the door and on the highway by 5:30am. I figured 330 miles of driving would be about 5 1/2 hours or so. Well between the breakfast/lunch stops and the heavy fog for most of the trip it turned into a little over 6 hours in the truck (my old '83 Toyota pickup can still get it done). Got to Bend and the pool about 11:30am or so. Perfect timing for the 12:00noon warmups.

    I did about 1000 SCM of warmup mostly EZ freestyle, and 1 arm fly drill work. Not much speed involved...just relaxing from the drive.

    SCM Pentathalon: They were starting with the 200s, then 100s, then 50s of each stroke (IMOrder), with each 200 event starting on the half hour (e.g. 1:00/1:30/2:00). This worked out well for everyone, so you basically swam an event every 30 minutes. No problem.

    200 Fly: 2:20.40 (best time by almost 4 seconds) New LMSC record.
    29.74 / 34.63 (1:04.37) / 36.68 / 39.35 OH YEAH!!! I found out that Bend is at 3800 feet of 'n elevation too. That explains my over excessive breathing patterns on the 2nd half of the race (and the piano on the last 50).
    My plan was to take it out fast at the 100 and "see what I could do" for the remainder. I died, but I'm still happy. Who wouldn't be after a 4 seconds PB??

    I had two goals in this race. Descend the 50s, and cool down from the 200 Fly. I acheived both.

    Again...no big goal here besides swim it easy and descend the 50s.

    200 Free: 2:15.40
    32.33 / 34.94 / 35.64 / 32.49**
    Again...see the above about taking it easy and descending.
    **Final 50 was Fly. Bad part about this is that I had already pre-planned to do this, and the guy next to me got dusted on the final 50...so in a way it looks bad on my part. Oh well.

    400 IM: 100 Fly Split: 1:03.29 (29.25 / 34.04)
    New Best Time, and also New LMSC Record
    Did a split request on this one for a Top Ten shot. Who knows...maybe it'll make it? Currently it is the 8th fastest, but well see what else happens in other meets too.

    So, overall I'm very happy. 2 new best times/new LMSC records. I ended up being 2 seconds away from the NW Zone record in the 200 Fly...oh well.

  12. Sunday, Dec. 4, 2011 USAS Meet Results Day 2

    I started off this morning by not setting an alarm on purpose. I was tired from yesterday, and enjoyed the bonus sleep. Also, why wake up for general warmups from 7:15-8:00 (13 & overs), when my first event isn't till after 10:00am?? I just got there about 9 and warmed up in the deep tank again. It worked good enough.
    Now I know why I don't do that many 2-day meets. The 2nd day is usually a train wreck waiting to happen, especially when you've already done 5 events the day before!

    200 Free - 1:56.36 (2nd place) - This one I just didn't have that get-out speed like I usually do. The 2nd hundred my legs were burning really bad. 1:54.5 is my best time I did 2 years ago, and I've been pretty consistent around 1:56 lately, so that part is good. The kid that won is a sprinter, and I was actually closing on him the final 50, but we would've needed another 50 more to make it close.

    100 Back - 1:03.90 (3rd place) - Well, I tried doing more SDKs than I normally do. I went 15 meters off the start with 11 kicks, and all other walls I did anywhere from 5-8 SDKs which is a huge improvement. I felt like I did well, until I saw the clock on the wall. I was 2.5 seconds off my best time. The other adults I swim with who are parents on the club team all informed me of how I need to fix my right hand entry and crossover. It's hard to describe it, so I just prefer not to swim backstroke (except for IMs).

    100 Fly - 58.78 (2nd place) - It felt good, but was just slow. 2 seconds slow. I was back and forth with the same kid who beat me in the 200 Free, and came to the final stroke where I had to make a decision of "do I or don't I??" If I took the final stroke I'd probably be looking for dental surgery, so I just kicked in and got beat. I was tired, plain and simple. Even my masters coach said I looked tired.

    50 Free - 24.72 (3rd place) - This was funny at the end of the race. There was a 15 year old from one of the other teams that had been wanting to beat me all day long, but just couldn't do it. As we all hit the wall, I looked at the clock, already knowing the sprinter kid was winning it. Waiting for Lane 4 (me) to pop up in 2nd place... it came up as Lane 2 (the 15 year old) second place. I was 3rd by a tenth of a second. I looked over and smiled at him. He got me, and he was for sure happy about it too.

    1000 Free - Yeah right!! I scratched it.
    It would've been trouble for me, and the lifeguards might have had to go into action. I'm sure I could've done decent, but if I'm not going to be in contention of beating my LMSC age group record (10:49), I don't want to swim it. I knew that wasn't going to happen today.

    I ended the weekend with two 1st places, 5 2nd places, and two 3rd places, and one NS. Not bad for racing the youngin's either. I'm not sure if they were doing high point awards, but if they are, I ended up scoring the most points in the 15 & overs boys group. Basically because most of the boys either only swam one of the two days, or those that swam 2 days, only did 3 or 4 events each day...whereas I did 9 events over the two days.
  13. Saturday, Dec. 3, 2011 USAS Meet Results Day 1

    I started off this morning at 4:30am like most meet days, except this meet was right here in town, and I wasn't heading to the meet, I was going to work for 4 hours of OT work to get some machinery fixed up prior to Monday.

    So with that I skipped the meet warmup, which IMO is pretty much pointless anyway, especially when I can take a few lengths in the deep tank 10 yard pool, or stretch in the warm showers anyway. This is a distance guy saying this...remember.
    Between each event I may have done 6-8 lengths in the 10 yard warmup area to cool down, but other than that...this day was swimming basically "cold turkey"...and I did just fine.

    100 Free - 52.57 (.5 seconds off best) 2nd place. breathing basically every stroke like I usually do, including double breathing right-left into all the turns.

    100 Breast - 1:08.91 (1.4 seconds off best) 2nd place. Worked on my very very long pullouts to reduce the amount of kicking I had to do. I don't want to put that much into my knees if I don't have to.

    200 IM - 2:12.11 (3 seconds off best) 2nd place. This was just sluggish after the fly. I struck my hand hard on my last stroke into the turn on the fly, and back and breast just suck, the free I was tired.

    I went home at this point for about 1 1/2 hours since I had about 2 1/2 hours till my next swim, which is my favorite one!! I really love my butterfly races, and especially the 200 Fly. Its strange that I feel soooo good in them most of the time, and I rarely ever practice fly. Maybe it's just one of the "built-in features" from all the prior years of swimming.

    200 Fly - 2:07.81 (1/2 second off best) 1st place. I was told I was out in a 1:00low at the 100. It was a great race with the 15 year old next to me. We were tied at the 100, but at the 125 I decided to start building from there, and the kid fell back a little bit. I felt strong all the way home, maintaining a 2up, 1 down breathing pattern.
    We were also the only two 13 & overs swimming the 200 Fly, and our seed times were both 2:07s going into the event...so I knew this was going to be a race. During the race, I could hear a large amount of the crowd was cheering, though I'm not sure who for. The 15 year old trying to beat the old guy, or the old guy trying to show he can still do it.

    500 Free - 5:18.xx (5 second off best) 1st Place - this one was tough, though I felt like I came back well in the final 150. The 14 year old next to me took off in the 1st 100 and I couldn't hang with him. He ended up at 5:09, which was right on his best.


    This was an all around fun day. The kids from all the teams are really enjoying racing with me and talking with me about things I've done in swimming and what I'm doing now. Another 15 year old told me he has a target on me in the 200 Free tomorrow. I told him good luck with that!

    I think tomorrow I'm going to skip the general warmup just like I did today. Warmups are so overrated...just don't tell the agegroupers that!

    I'm swimming the 200 Free, 100 Back, 100 Fly, 50 Free, and 1000 Free tomorrow. Should be good until the final event. I haven't done a multiday event in a while, so I'll be tired, and having the 1000 at the end isn't my first choice.

    I took a look at the heat sheet they were posting on the wall, and I'm seeded pretty well (these are from my memory).
    Sat: 100 Free (2nd), 100 Breast (2nd), 200 IM (1st), 200 Fly (1st but it'll be a race with the other guy ), 500 Free (2nd).
    Sun: 200 Free (2nd), 100 Back (5th), 50 Free (3rd), 100 Fly (1st), 1000 Free (2nd).
    Should be good times!! The good thing about this being a USAS meet is that the 500 and 1000 are seeded fast to slow, so I don't have to wait around.

    This meet was held at the Eastern Washington University pool in Cheney, WA. Pretty good (old) pool, deep water all the way.
    I'm gonna make this one quick. This was one week after my shave and taper meet that I did last weeekend, so I wasn't exactly feeling 100% today, but still decent enough.

    200 Fly - 2:07.27 This was basically right on my best masters time, and by my splits, I went out 2 seconds slower at the 100 and came back much better. I guess this means that I'm in much better shape now.

    A.M. Workout - Holy S, this was more than intense...and this was even before getting in the pool.
    I was warned that swimming at the YMCA in the morning is insane, but man these are crazy!! I got there 10 minutes before the swimming starts, and already there were many people waiting in the lobby. They don't start scanning you in till the stroke of 5:30am, so I had my suit on under my clothes to be ready. I was scanned in about #5 in line, went in, got undressed and came out on deck. There were already 8 ladies out there "claiming their territory"!! There was one lane straight out of the men's lockerroom that no one had put anything down yet, so I threw my goggles on and jumped in!! I already had the first 1/2 of my short warmup done before anyone else even hit the water though. Apparently the race is to just claim your lane, whatever the hell that represents! I apparently took someone's "spot" out of the regulars there each morning. Too bad, so sad...WAH!!! My dentist came in soon after me and joined into my lane, but had to circle swim...not a problem. He asked why I was over at the Y this morning... (I told him loud enough that everyone with there head out of the water heard) saying "because of high school pool is closed for the month since that kid drowned yesterday."
    Everyone was like, "what happened??!?!?!" Apparently all these don't read the newspaper anymore!! I gave a brief on it really quick, but told them to check in online news about it. I was just surprised that in this small town all the people hadn't heard about the drowning.

    Definitely NOT tapering or resting at all for this one...
    The 3 day USA-S meet is already started over in Cheney, WA It's about a 2 1/2 hour drive from here, and depending on how much snow is out there could be a little longer, but not by much. Everyone here somewhat seems to know how to drive in the snow.
    I'm swimming on Sunday only of the meet, and swimming the:

    200 Fly, 200 Back, and 200 Free

    I seeded myself with my best masters times

    Should be fun racing the kids. I haven't swum against most of these kids yet from the Spokane area and northern Idaho teams. Fun times a coming...either that I'm in for a serious ass kicking!!

    Wow...what a tiring day!! Why I'm not going to bed right now, I don't know...
    Got to bed Saturday night late after cleaning up from the Manny Pacquiao/Juan Marquez boxing PPV fight party we hosted. Asleep around 11pm or so.
    Then at 1:00am: my son comes into the room crying with an ear infection. That was great timing of course!! Got back after getting everything done at the hospital and back asleep at 3:00am...then at 4:30am...BEEP BEEEP f'n BEEEP!!
    Time to get up and pack my bag for the meet. Outta the house by 5:00am, stopped at 7-11 for the hot chocolate wake up juice, and I'm off!
    Arrived at the pool about 8:45 for the 9:00am warmups. Did about 10 minutes of warmup, then hit the showers for my full shave down.
    Now I just had to wait over 2 hours until Heat 5 of the 1500s to get started with my day...and a hell of a day it was!! (Took a 1 hour "power nap" in the corner during heats 1 and 2.)

    This last 100 was called "the rundown". I was 2.5 seconds back from the leader with 100 to go, and 2.0 seconds back with a 50 to go. Our final times were 17:51.09 vs. 17:51.26. David Kays said he looked my direction about 10 meters to go, and I was no where to be found, then at the finish there I was!!! Deep down in my heart I wanted to do that comeback like I did, but wasn't really sure if I could actually do it. David is usually really strong on the finishing 100s of races.

    I missed the NW Zone record in this event by 4 seconds, and it hurt like hell at the end of the race. I gave it a good effort though. At least I beat Rick Colella by about 1 second (who set 4 world records in the 60-64 group today)...also is a former Olympian. YIPPIE!!! I beat an Olympian (I don't care if he's twice my age, he's still hella fast!!)

    I was totally exhausted stepping onto the blocks for this race, and almost stumbled at the top. I told That Guy that he could have this race. I dove in and just swam easy legal fly, controlling my breathing. Then coming off the last 50, That Guy went for it, and I was feeling pretty good at this point, so I went for it too!! We both ended up getting best times, and I almost caught him. This is also the first time I've nearly even split a 200 Fly also...and I didn't like doing it that way - it felt like the wimpy way out of the race.

    400 Free - 5:23.99 - Did a 200 Free split request on this one.

    I'd done 3 other 200 Frees this year, and was 2:08.2, 2:08.3, and 2:08.5. I really wanted to get under that 2:08 barrier, and I did...then I had to actually do a 200 Cooldown to complete the race so the split request would count.
    (I normally don't cool down much at all between races like most people do)

  18. Friday, Nov. 11, 2011 5:00am Meet Prep and Other Meet Info

    Got in this morning and knew I wasn't going to do much. After the past 5-6 weeks of doing almost daily doubles, and this week dropping to singles after Tuesday, then 4400 Wed, 2500 Thurs, it was only right to do about 1500 today, so that's what I did. Nothing intense just a little splash around.

    I'm ready for the SCM Masters meet on Sunday. Crazy events, but that's crazy James for you:

    1500 Free, 200 IM, 400 IM, 200 Fly, 400 Free

    Should be good. I've got a couple races each with Kirk (1500 and 400 IM) and That Guy (200 Fly and 400 Free)
    I'll show up to the pool looking like Wookiee, and hopefully will leave with less hair than a baby's butt. I've got to be checked in for the 1500 by 9:30am, but won't swim till the 5th heat around 12:00 or so.
    The 400IM will be an "all in" race for me, going for the 30-34 NW Zone record (there I announced it). If I miss it, so be it, but if you never put your goals out there, what good are they???

    I'm only swimming on Sunday, so if you care to check it out, I'm in events 114 (200 Fly), 126 (200 Back), and 134 (200 Free). I seeded myself with my best times I've acheived in masters, and have a good shot at bettering them.

    15th in the 200 Back
    8th in the 200 Free

    It's a 6 lane pool, so that means I'll have clean water and no wall lanes for all races (not that it matters).

    Should be some good races.

  19. Saturday, Oct. 22, 2011 Spokane Meet Results

    I just got back into town from the meet. What a day! It was an afternoon meet, which is good for the sleep in the morning, but sucks in regard to the 3+ hour drive home at the end of the night. Lucky for me I was just a passenger this time in a carpool.

    Today was the dedication swim day that I had planned for Peony Munger, who by the way, is still swimming here 1650 flys 3 mornings a week. She is still going through here chemotherapy treatments for her pancreatic cancer, and is noticibly weaker as the weeks roll by. She was unable to come to the meet to watch, but was there in spirit.

    I started off the meet with my 1000 Fly in the Free event. Ended up winning the whole thing too, lapping the field multiple times. I notified the people in my heat that I was going to be swimming the entire race fly, just so they wouldn't get surprised or whatever as they looked over at me in the race. Throughout the race I felt great, and at the turns, I could hear the announcer speaking, and this seemed to go on for turn after turn after turn. Well, it turns out that our masters coach had got onto the microphone to explain to the crowd about Peony and what she's done, how she's doing, and the purpose of my 1,000 Fly dedication swim in her honor tonight. They all clapped and cheered for me after the coach finished talking, though I didn't truly hear it.
    In the race, I just held a semi-consistent 2-up, 1 down breathing pattern, with an occasional 3 breath pattern as needed. Most (37) of my turns were one handed turns to allow for a little extra air and rest coming into the walls. Some of the turns around the 650-900 point may have been slow motion to where I could take 2-3 breaths each time, but I held strong, and finished like a champ on the last 100.

    200 - 2:16
    300 - 3:31
    500 - 6:03
    1000 - 12:33 (6:30 2nd 500, which is approx 1:18s per 100)

    200 Free Relay - swam the anchor leg fast. I was all by myself as the other teams had already finished before I dove in.

    50 Fly - 26.24
    The first length sucked, and bad turn, but had a good SDK and great 2nd 25. Also 2nd fastest 50 Fly I've done.

    400 Free Relay - swam leadoff - 53.80
    Decent, but not very quick. Still feeling the effects of the 1000, also didn't have any competition.

    100 Fly - 58.24 (1/2 second slower than couple weeks ago)
    This one was just ok...2nd 50 was tough...got beat by a young stud in lane 1 entered with a NT. (if they really know that they're fast, why not enter a time even like 1:00???)

    200 Medley Relay - swam Fly fast. This was just plain fun. Also was immediately after the 100 Fly. Caught us back up with other teams.

    At this point, I was just exhausted. Sitting on the bench I was told that I looked like a zombie staring into emptiness across the pool. That's the way I felt too! My body was just jello, my muscles sore, ugh!! Guess what's up next??

    200 Fly - 2:10.42 (3 seconds off my time from SCY Nats in Mesa)
    Very good considering the circumstances. I don't know my splits, but I'm going to guess I was out around 1:00 to 1:01 at the 100, so finished very well.

    This was way beyond better than I thought I was going to do. I wanted to go for it, but wasn't sure how I was going to do it, but somehow my body held on and toughed it out. This was over a second faster than I did at SCY Nats in Mesa, so I'm VERY HAPPY with it. And considering the torture of the day of events I did, WOW!

    I can only guess that the increased workload that I've been doing this year vs. prior years is paying off for me now. I'm able to hang tough when in the past I would've flopped really hard. Overall, I'm just 100% pleased with the outcome of today's meet. It really couldn't have gone much better.

    3 more weeks till I'm going to shave down, and semi-taper for my final SCM meet of my 30-34 career...and my first and only shot to break the LMSC 1500 SCM record, along with bettering my own records in other events. Should be a fun 3 weeks coming up. I'm going to enjoy the day off tomorrow!

    This felt likethe second day of a 2 day meet to me after that onslaught of punishment I put myself through at the Alumni meet yesterday. It's all good though. I had fun at both. My shoulder has a little "something" in it now, that wasn't there before I started this weekend. I'll just have to work it out a little.

    Stopped at my grandparents to get some lunch and a quick visit before heading 5 hours for home with the family. (and to post this)


    Meet results (condensed format):

    200 Free - 2:08.35 (got chicked by Lauren Thies by 0.04 seconds). Also just missed my best time by 0.06 seconds.
    I should've beaten her...my splits were much better all around...she just saved it all for the final hurrah at the finish. I kicked it into gear on the 3rd 50, and brought in my legs on the 4th 50, but they hurt bad at the 175 point of the race. Just went for home with all I had. It was a great race though.

    200 IM - 2:26.6 or so. Best masters time by 2 seconds which was nice.
    Fly was decent, I had to chase a really fast guy in this race, and had a showdown with another guy 2 lanes over. My freestyle is the only thing that's really feeling good nowadays. I guess that reflects my training.

    200 Breast - 2:51 (Allen Stark - 2:52) Originally I had talked briefly about racing with the World Record Holder in this race, and he accepted. He is twice my age, so what do I get...a kick in the *ss for beating him??? The trouble is, we weren't seeded together to really know who was where during the race. I was in Lane 1, and he was in Lane 6. It's all good, and afterwards, Allen really let me have it with: "Nice job on the win...but you still didn't beat my Long Course Meters time!" Oh man!!! Allen is still the ultimate champ!

    100 Fly - 1:05.9 This just sucked. I was 2 seconds slow, and my shoulder could feel the pain every few strokes. There were basically two groups in our heat. One group (lanes 2 and 4) were at :59 seconds, and our group were eating their waves at 1:05s in lanes 1 (That Guy), 3, and 5 (James). That Guy beat me in the race.

    100 IM - 1:07.0 This was my first time swimming this in SCM, so best time!
    I felt great all the way through this, and this is also one of the only races where I will use SDKs on my backstroke.

    I had a tough age group at this meet. Lots of fast 30-34 year old guys, but it was loads of fun. I enjoy the competition. Much better than always running away with the races.
