Might be some fuzzy math over here

  1. 01/18/14: Postal - One Hour Swim

by , January 18th, 2014 at 09:53 PM (Maple Syrup with a Side of Chlorine)
I started the day at a very beneficial men's breakfast - the food was great and the pastor shared with us "living within our needs" in terms of how we allocate the 168 hours/week we are given (aren't we used to looking at this idea in terms of money?). I have a sheet to consider.

I got home before Masters and Lena was ready to come and help count for the OHS that I had planned for the team. I wasn't sure how many would do it, and was very surprised (and proud) that GregJS did an official swim with me, and Melissa, Meg and Kevin did it for the experience.

I did a 300 warmup, took a Hammer gel and swig of water, then started. I ended up with 4560 yards, which was 5 less than last year, then 100 easy as we all talked about our feat. Here's to our little contribution helping our team remain champs again!

My wife took me out to Chili's for lunch, then we enjoyed a couple's massage downtown. We got home this evening for a dip in the hot tub as the snow was falling, now I'm ready for
  2. 11/13/13: 6000yd Postal

by , November 13th, 2013 at 11:23 PM (Maple Syrup with a Side of Chlorine)
I was able to get in an easy 1200 yard swim Monday morning before work, and even saw a bit of the Veterans ay Parade as I was out giving flu shots. I am thankful for all in our lanes that have served our country and sacrificed. I appreciate you.

I had an appointment this morning that I am waiting to hear back on, although the medical staff questioned if I am on any meds to lower my pulse due to a low heart rate. I replied, "Nope, I'm an endurance/marathon swimmer."

After cleaning out the garage (a promise I keep to my wife before the first major snow fall, but usually after the first minor one ) today, I was able to convince my beloved to get splits for the 6000yd Postal swim, which I completed after dinner.

    500yd 1000 Cumulative
    6:25
    6:27 12:52
    6:43
    7:03 13:46 26:38
    7:03
    7:04 14:07 40:39 (eleven sec slower than the 3000yd!)
    7:02
    7:00 14:02 54:41
    6:50 (One hour ~ 4400yds)
    7:00 13:50 1:01:31
    6:54
    6:32 13:36 1:21:57.49

    150 loosen = 6150 yds total

I took it out a little slower and ended up fairly close to my time from Sunday. I am pleased with the spliting, and tried to pick up the pace on the last 500. I did mostly free, but mixed in some one-arm fly and back. I noticed a little after the one hour mark that I started to get hungry - need to pack an energy gel next year. My wife was kind enough to make a note of the times I stopped for a drink or inquire about the distance I am blessed to have have her

Punishment for master swimmer= Postal challenges
Punishment for swimmer's kid= taking splits

    500 - cumulative
    6:14 06:14.11
    6:53 13:07.37
    6:48 19:55.74
    7:04 26:59.01
    6:39 33:38.53
    6:50 40:28.08

Plus 400 as warm up and cool down
    (Solo/Rec/3400 yds/55 min)
    -----------------------------

Felt ok, except for the 4th 500 - left shoulder was stiff so did more back and some stretches while swimming. Tuckered out on that last one. I was anticipating around 42, so am pleased with the effort. Our pool is open on Sunday's from Nov thru March, and people have yet to figure it out - more lane space for me

I was able to split the lane with GregJS today for a great lunchtime swim ...

    w/u: 200 Fr/200 Bk/200 IM drill
    10 x 50 with snorkel
    - odds = Fr DPS on :45
    - evens = kick with board on :55

    On to a Broken 1650

Try to hit your 1650 pace during the broken swim. Pick a Base + :10 for the interval (my base is 1:20 - so 1:30).

    3 x 100 Free @ 1:30 (went 1:06.50, 107.75, 1:08.43)
    4 x 150 Free @ 2:15 (went 1:46.81, 1:49.00, 1:49.44, 1:51.82)
    3 x 200 Free @ 3:00 (went 2:30.68, 2:27.75, 2:28.62)
    3 x 50 Free @ :45 (went 31.56, 30.87, 31.62)
    (1650 add-up time: 19:40)
    (Total set time: 24:20.68)
50 ez, followed by 50 breast

    6 x 100 Bk on 1:30 (1:15, :16, :16, :18, :14)
3 x 200 Fr Pull with buoy and snorkel on 2:50
    1 x 50 loosen and out
    (Solo/Rec/4100 yds/80 min)
    --------------------------

Great to run into Greg today and get some feedback on the coached workouts I have been using with our team. Also to pick his brain about technique on breaststroke (here is that link we talked about related to [ame="http://forums.usms.org/showthread.php?t=21401"]kicking[/ame] - post 16+).

I have been wanting to do this broken mile again, and since the lane was not full today I did it. I knew that I would not be as fast as I was in Februrary (different time in the training cycle), and was just under 50 seconds slower today. Oh well - a good quality set none the less

Since things were quiet, I popped off some backs, focusing on at least 4 sdk per wall and max 10 strokes per length; accomplished. I need to swim more backstroke in practice with the 200 bk coming up at the BU meet in December.

I mentioned to Greg that I plan to do the Brute Squad events (400 IM, 200 Fly, 1500) at the Riverton meet in a few weeks. Even though they are not running the numbers this year for the competition, I figure I will give it a shot as it is the only meet in our neck of the woods swimming a 1500 scm (which I planned on doing anyways). Should be a good challenge! Wonder if John and Susan are going to give it a go

    w/u: 50 FR

    4000yds for time = 56.07
    6:29, 6:48, 6:53, 7:24 (feed on first 25)
    7:21, 7:21 (feed on first 25), 6:56, 6:51

    50 loosen and out.
    (Solo/Rec/4100yds/60 min)
    ----------------------
Slower than my 3000yd timed swim 3 weeks ago, but I figured it would be. The pool is warm today (86) and my mindset was more to get through than to do it fast. I again just strung together a bunch of my infamous Noah's Arks, but didn't really push the pair of 100s. First feed was Accerlerade, second was plain water - I just kicked on my back and slugged down the liquid as I went to the other end of the pool.

Now to enjoy the rest of my last day of vacation. Monday night is pizza night at our house, as we help support our local economy through buying a pie and some cheezy bread sticks. Mmmm. Then off to Men's Group/Bible study tonight.

by , May 14th, 2012 at 10:23 PM (Maple Syrup with a Side of Chlorine)
    w/u: 200 FR/100 BR drill/100 Fly drill

    Timed 3,000yd swim
    06:24.03 06:24.03 - 0500yds
    06:43.28 13:07.xx - 1000yds
    06.48.12 19:55.xx - 1500yds
    (note: 1750 time = 23.20.xx)
    06:55.13 26.50.xx - 2000yds
    (1 minute feed break)
    06:42.81 33:33.xx - 2500yds
    06:51.38 40.28.xx - 3000 yds (avg 2.5mph)

    4 x 50 FR Burst on :45
    - 6/8/10/12

250 reverse IM drill cooldown (extra free at end)
    (Solo/Rec/3850yds/60 min)
    --------------------------

With the Accelerade going down smooth after my lunchtime swim, I figured I had better do two things tonight: start on some timed swims and give the primary feed (maltodextrin) a shot. I mixed it up with some water and apple juice, then chilled it in the fridge, so it went down well in the 85 degree pool at the 2000 mark. No stomach issues to note.

The swim was good - I just repeated Noah's Arks (did the last 2x100 DPS only) so I would know my lap count. According to the pace chart, I was a tad over my base of 1:20/100 yds, so that is promising. I added the 50's for a challenge, like trying to finish out a long swim, and I tried mostly for good form (came in around :34 on all). Then some nice loosening up to complete the night.

It felt good to just swim for a bit, and I had a tv theme song in my mind - "My eyes are getting weary, my back is getting tight." Applied to the swim a bit as well! Anyways, off to bed now. Keep the water moving until I can get back in on Wednesday.
