My Team
I swim on a small team (Madison Titans) with 4 regulars and a couple others that can't make the morning workout. On Saturdays and occasional weekdays, I drop by HSA in Huntsville for a swim in the big pool.

  1. 11/12/12 - Monday workout

    Swam w/ Dave, Dave, Dave and Ray. Tough weekend. My team played great despite some bad coaching decisions. I let a team we were beating 2-0 get back into the game with some poorly placed players at the wrong time. We still got a 3-3 draw but after losing the first game, it wasn't enough to move on. My refereeing was probably worse than my coaching. I've done plenty of U16 games but they had me centering two U19 boys games. Speed was different and I was frequently overwhelmed with keeping up. I finished w/ a U19 girls game that wasn't too bad but I was so tired by then I'm not all that sure. Sunday, I had to assistant referee a couple girls games. I did a lot better at A/R but the constant stop/go sprinting was killing my knees. Got up this morning, took a couple ibuprofen and headed to the pool expecting a rough morning. Turned out to be not so bad.

  2. 11.10.12 - Saturday workout

    Swam w/ Dave, Dave, Dave, Mary, Carmen, Bob and Bob at the Huntsville Nat. Felt pretty good this morning. After practice, I headed out to Coach a U16 Soccer match (we lost) and then Referee a U19 game. Have one more game to coach today and 2 more to referee. If my team doesn't win this afternoon, I'm going to look seriously into the Nashville SCM meet. If they get on a winning streak, I'll be tied up with coaching at State next weekend.

    At this point, Dave C was the only one still around. We decided to race a timed 400... his backstroke vs. my IM. I figured a 5:40 to 5:45 would be realistic this late into practice. He was expecting a 5:50. At 100 yards, we were pretty much even. That was a bad sign for me because I was about to go into a serious deficit on the backstroke. And a serious deficit it was. About 15 yards. I pulled back to 10 or 12 yards behind on the breaststroke and then set off to chase him down w/ free. Pretty close at the end but winning wasn't as big a deal as the time... 5:33. Neither of us were expecting that.

I only had time for a couple grapes and some cookie bars between swimming and refereeing. First game wasn't so bad but I was feeling it in the second one. Got home and crashed.

    Not sure why I decided to do this (was swimming solo at this point). My heart wasn't into it and I was :04s behind after the second one. Somewhere after that I got mad at myself for wanting to quit and decided I would make up the difference. Stopped at the 100s long enough to readjust the pull buoy. Goggles were too fogged to get a good time reading. By the time I got my goggles off to check the clock on #5, it was just passing 5:50.

    Swam w/ Ray, Roger, Aundrey, and Keith. No Daves today. I suspect they were out late last night getting candy and papering people's houses . We did a mix of yesterday's masters workout and MSA's workout. I fell apart near the end and had to switch to pull.

    Swam w/ Dave, Dave and Danny. Yesterday, my son called me out to the front yard in the late afternoon because something cool was happening in the sky. Turns out he was right... there were rainbows everywhere. The sky was mostly clear but hazy enough to refract light all over the place. My cell phone camera unfortunately doesn't do justice to what this really looked like but here are some photos I caught:

    Swam w/ Dave, Dave and Ray. Got my GTD suit in the mail yesterday. Nike is once again sponsoring my swimming efforts. I'm sure that royalty checks will soon follow. Quick note for Speedo and TYR... I haven't worn the suit yet so there's still time to sign me for a better contract.

    Ray had us doing a "power hour" today. Intervals on a 1:30 pace for 4000 yards. I stuck with free/pull today and added some extra yardage in.

    Swam w/ Dave, Dave, Dave, Roger, Aundrey, Meredith, Danny and Ray. Soccer was exhausting last night. We had a really light turnout despite perfect weather. Played 3 v 2 where the team that last got scored on got the extra player. Fewer players means more running, more touches on the ball and more aches and pains from falls. I really thought I'd have a rough morning in the pool but it wasn't bad at all. Made 5 x 300 IM on 4:30 with a drag suit. That's not something I thought I could do.

  14. 10.26.12 - Friday workout

    Swam w/ Roger, Dave, Dave, Dave, Chris, Meredith and Danny. Not much distance today but some good quality sets near race pace. My GTD stats are going to take a hit from low yardage today and the Nat being closed tomorrow. I'll have to catch up next week I guess.

    Relays
    Started with 3 three team relays. We did a 3 x 200 relay broken into 50s. Made 6:00. I don't know what my splits were but I'm pretty sure I was around :26 to :27. After that, we did 2 four team relays (Keith had to leave). This one was more complicated. We started with 200 kick broken into 50s. The catch was that we had to tag off by handing our board to the next person in the relay. Continued directly into 200 pull. Same thing with some really awkward buoy transfers. Then we each did 200 backstroke. That was followed by each of us doing 3 rounds of our strongest (kick, pull, free or back). Each team member had to pick one... no duplicating what someone else was doing. I took the kick leg. Ended up racing against a teenage fly kicker. My breaststroke kick is pretty strong but this was no contest. I mostly saw fly wake.

    Swam w/ Dave, Dave, Dave, Ray, Keith, Teresa, Chris and Meredith. Wore my Yingfa jammer w/ no drag suit.

    Broken 200 - 4 x 50 w/ :16 s rest in between each 50. Made 2:01 which is disappointing. I was under the 2:00 pace at 150 yards but had a really bad turn. I'm not getting tired... just sloppy.

    All 200s except the middle one were supposed to be stroke/no free. I fell behind on the first three but caught up on the middle 200. From there, I held the interval. Have never done this much backstroke before. I made 2:48 on the 5th 200 which I believe is a personal best for me.
