  1. 09.12.13 - Thursday workout

    Swam w/ Dave. Ate waaaaay too many hot wings last night. Hot wings are not swim practice food. It felt like I had hot sauce and grease flowing through my veins once my heart rate started picking up. After the first set, I felt better. Maybe I sweat it all out into the pool? That would explain the oil sheen on the surface of the water when we got out.

    The pull was pretty bad. I was on track for a 4:20 or so but with 75 to go, my paddle entered the water wrong. The paddle ended up twisting 2 or three times and loosened the strap. Once it untwisted, it was too loose to stay on my hand. I ended up limping to the end of the pool and fixing it.

  2. 09.11.13 - Wednesday workout

    Swam w/ Dave, Dave and Jonny. Jonny is staying with us from Scotland for a few weeks to train coaches and players in our AYSO soccer region. This is his off day so he swam w/ us, got back home and fell asleep. I'm not quite so fortunate. He's a pretty good swimmer but hasn't competed in 10 years. He hung in there for a while but his conditioning isn't quite ready for a 90 minute workout. Speaking of which, the workout was shorter today due to a lot more kicking. We just ran out of time at the end.

  3. 09.10.13 - Tuesday workout

    Swam w/ Dave and Dave. Did some swims I haven't been able to do before. Too bad I had to drop the drag suit to make it . Dave made his 500 GTD miles today. Great job Dave!

    Swam Saturday at HSA with Dave, Dave, Bob, Mary, Don and a couple others. Had a good swim and was a bit faster than I usually am on Saturdays. I did a little more than 5K total. This morning, I swam w/ Dave, Dave, Roger and Meredith. Felt sluggish at first after soccer yesterday. Eventually picked it up and had a good day. I was really happy w/ the IM even if I was drafting.

    The IM was supposed to be all on 2:45. We decided to do odds free on 2:45 and evens IM on 3:15. At the last moment, Roger decided to go all IM. I told him I'd do it but he would have to lead the lane. Surprisingly, I made it and with some rest. The trick was closing the 5 second gap on fly and drafting the rest of the way. I still gave up a lot on backstroke but I was making 2:40s. On the 3:15 interval, I was going fairly easy and still making 3:00.

    Swam w/ Dave and Meredith. Dave B and Roger dropped by for a quick swim in prep for their triathlon. Felt decent today.

    The original interval for the 300 was 4:00. We dropped it back so we could make it. I did breaststroke. Dave and Meredith did fly. I kept up with the flyers and was actually pulling away from them at 150 yards. At 200 yards, I hit a wall and started having problems on my pull-outs. They both blew past me on the last 25. Ended up making 4:25.

  6. 09.05.13 - Thursday workout

    Swam yesterday with Meredith and Dave. Dave B and Roger came in later and did a broken 400 in preparation for a sprint triathlon they are doing this weekend. I put in 5K total, most of which came in 6 rounds of: (4x50 IM Order @ :50 + 2x200 pull @ 2:20 + 1:00 Rest) Today, I swam w/ Dave. Dave B showed up later in full triathlon gear. He looked pretty fancy with his new red TYR tri-jammer nicely coordinated with his cycling jersey and red highlighted running shoes. I'm pretty sure he will be fast but if he isn't, at least he has the looking fast part of it down.

    Speaking of cool new stuff, I got my yearly GTD Nike swim suit in the mail yesterday for making 500 miles. Looks like I've held on to my sponsorship deal for another year. Wake up TYR and Speedo! Yet again, I'll be sporting a Nike swoosh on my left hip instead of your brands. My agent is standing by for your call.

    Dropped my drag suit for this set. After round 1, I was hoping Dave would stop and we would just hold off each round until the clock came back to the top. After round 2, I started feeling better. After round 3, I knew I could make it. Definitely would have been a struggle with a drag suit on.

    Swam solo today. Did 4700 yds w/ Mary and Bob on Saturday at HSA. Pretty much expected no turnout on Labor Day. Dave and Roger are resting for triathlons. We didn't make plans to meet at a different time since the pool was opening late today. Didn't feel bad for a solo swim. At times, I was almost self motivated.

    Swam w/ Dave, Dave, Dave and Bob Saturday at the Huntsville NAT. Sam headed back to school Friday. We will probably get a couple high school swimmers looking for doubles next week. It has been a decent week. I'm getting used to 5k/day again. Backstroke is improving but still weak. Some of my breaststroke changes are starting to pay off as well. I'm getting my hips forward and hands out faster which is helping me set up a longer glide.

    100 IM/200 IM/300 IM/400 IM, open turns at the end of each IM. If :10 seconds ahead of the 100 pace, substituted free for stroke.

  12. 08.12.13 - Tuesday workout

    Swam w/ Dave, Sam and my daughter. My daughter is 9 and has dreams of being on the MSA swim team. She doesn't like waking up in the morning so, this might be a one-time event. I wish I had more time to take her swimming in the afternoon. Tryouts are in 10 days and pool space is limited.

    As for me, I felt pretty cruddy today. My speed was ok but my stomach wasn't agreeing with the workout.

    On a positive note, I passed 500 miles for the year! New swim suit!

  13. 08.12.13 - Monday workout

    Swam w/ Roger, Dave, Dave, Sam and Charlie. Haven't blogged in a while. I have been swimming but with soccer season and heavier than normal workloads, I don't have time for much else lately. Thursday I did 5100 yds. At this point I can't remember much about what I did. After my workout, I donated platelets and didn't feel so great the rest of the day. That night, I left my phone (my alarm clock) in the car and slept in Friday morning. I did manage to get to the pool about 3:00 about the time thunderstorms rolled through. Since that didn't work out, I ended up helping out with field lining. I felt better Saturday morning and swam at the Nat w/ Dave and Gina. Here's what we did:

    After Saturday's workout, I headed off to line more fields and do some referee training. Got a little sun but it wasn't too bad since storms were blowing through creating shade and cooling us off. I kind of planned to make up Friday's workout on Sunday. But after 4 hours in the sun finishing off some field lining, I went home dehydrated and feeling pretty bad. Decided to just rest it off and recover some.

    Had a decent pull set this morning but that took everything out of me. Didn't feel too great after that.

    Swam solo today. I woke up to a line of thunderstorms and just went back to bed. Managed to get to the pool about noon. For some reason, I got it in my head to work on backstroke. I did a few drills and worked at it but felt more like I was just reinforcing bad habits.

    So, I mostly worked on body position. Head back and hips up. I mostly got lots of water up my nose and in my sinuses. My teammates tell me my arm is bending such that I'm entering the water directly over my head and not over my shoulder. It doesn't feel that way and without direct feedback, this is hard to correct.

    Swam w/ Dave, Sam and Carlile. Dave hurt his shoulder so he and Brook helped me with backstroke some on Saturday. Sadly I seem to be a lost cause. It kind of bothers me that I'm swimming it wrong but I'm not sure how to fix it. I did play soccer some last night. It used to be I was one of the better players that showed up. Now, we seem to be attracting players from the local adult leagues wanting a little extra practice. I have trouble keeping up with the speed of the game but I'm becoming a better player. Fortunately, my knees took last nights game better than for the last two weeks. While my knees held out well, I didn't seem to have much energy for swimming today.

  17. 08.02.13 - Friday workout

    Swam w/ Dave, Dave and Carlile. Dave B had the freestyle cranked up. I just couldn't keep up today. I guess I was saving for the 2 x 100 fly. But Dave M beat me on those. I did however have a pretty good warm up. I think I won that. And some of my 50 easys were spectacular.

    On the last round, we made the 2 x 100 fly a 200 timed fly. It was my idea and a poor one at that. Made 2:46. Had Dave M beat through 175. He made a great surge on the last 25 and I didn't have enough to stay with him.

    Roger pointed out that I'm not rotating my shoulders enough and getting my hand deep enough upon entry. Changed my stroke a little to compensate. I'm not any faster/slower doing this but I'm sore from using new muscle groups.

    8 x 100 Up/Down Kick - 1:45 (:05), base stroke fly. Start w/ 100 fly

    Swam w/ Dave C. Dave usually swims next to us with a different group. Thunderstorms kept most swimmers away this morning, so he joined my workout. Its nice to have someone swimming w/ you. Solo stinks.

    I tried to keep my speed up since the intervals were generous. Went 1:20 for 100 fly, 1:25 for 100 bk and 1:20 for 100 br.

    Made 1:05 on the last 2. Had to pretend Dave B was racing me to keep motivated. Somehow he beat me anyway.

    Swam w/ Dave and Dave. Lots of IM today. We adjusted the intervals so we could get a little rest. Still was tough.

    600 Warm up

    8 x 50 Pull - :50 2 easy/2 hard
    4 x 100 IM - 1:30
    4 x 75 Kick - 1:25 (br/bk/br)
    2 x 200 IM - 2:55
    4 x 75 Kick - 1:20 (fly/fr/br)
    1 x 400 IM - 5:40 (made 5:35)
    Rest & adjust intervals

    4 x 75 kick w/ fins - 1:20
    2 x 200 IM - 3:00
    4 x 75 kick w/ fins - 1:20
    4 x 100 IM - 1:30 (made 1:22-1:23 -> good because I wouldn't have made any on the original 1:20 interval)
