My Team
I swim on a small team (Madison Titans) with 4 regulars and a couple others that can't make the morning workout. On Saturdays and occasional weekdays, I drop by HSA in Huntsville for a swim in the big pool.

    Felt really slow this morning. Finally got going after the 16 100s. Made the splits one the 300s which I think is the first time I've done that with a drag suit.

  2. MATT Monday Workout

    The two breaths per 25 were an absolute menace in the first set. Its so hard to keep going when I'm oxygen deprived but I made it through the set anyway. The 1000 was fun. I proclaimed that I wouldn't get lapped twice this time. To which Roger replied "there's blood in the water now." Sure enough he was bearing down on me for the second pass at the end of my third 200. In a last ditch effort, I threw on my fins and tried to hang on. Managed to keep up for 150 yards but it was all over after that.

    This is a shortened version of the 5K I did last week. Far more manageable on the knees.

  5. MATT "Make it up as you go" Friday Workout

    "Make it up as you go" may be contrary to some items in this thread: [ame="http://forums.usms.org/showthread.php?t=18522"]Are Most Masters Teams Training Wrong? - U.S. Masters Swimming Discussion Forums[/ame] but it's Friday and we decided to swim without any singular purpose today. Each of us just suggests our favorite set and that's what we end up doing. Our fly happy team mate started us with 10 x 50 fly. I was tempted to return the favor and throw in 10 x 50 Breast but my knee is hurting. Revenge will have to wait another week.

    400 Warm up

    6 x 50 Free - :45

    Slight break to discuss next set and groan about all the fly suggested.

    I picked an IM set. Usually when I make a set up, it doesn't quite work out right. This one didn't seem too bad though.

    400 IM Timed (5:54) - I was a basket case on the 100 Fly. Looked more like a controlled drowning.

    Finishing the 200 on a 1:15 pace and turning around to do fly was no treat but the 25s were a good recovery for the next round.

    1000 - 15:00
    Open turns every 100 yds. If ahead of the 1:30 pace, substitute 25 kick for 25 free. If behind, substitute 25 free for 25 kick.

    I stuck with this one until my knee started giving out (breast stroke kick). Took a couple 50s off but finished strong with 4x75 fly. Had a good bit of rest on each one also.

  10. 5K Breast Stroke Drill

    Missed a couple days this week. Thursday, my wife had her gall bladder removed. That went well and I'm very fortunate to have been able to swim Friday morning. Saturday morning, severe storms rolled through and lasted all day - pool closed . I had a couple hours to spare today so I got the idea that maybe I could throw together some things I liked from the Breaststroke Lane ([ame="http://forums.usms.org/showthread.php?t=16584"]The Breastroke Lane - U.S. Masters Swimming Discussion Forums[/ame]). First off, 5K is a bit much for breaststroke and now I've got a touch of tendonitis. Maybe someone could use pieces of this for another workout. Thanks to all who posted tips and drills to the breast stroke lane. I used a lot of it in the workout. Here it is:

    Tendonitis kicked in about 200 yards into this. I ended up mixing a lot of backstroke and fly kick in to relieve the pain in my knee.

    Start with easy to make stroke count. Decrease one stroke each 100. I started with 8 and went down to 4. I learned a LOT from this set. Dropping to 5 strokes didn't really impact my speed even though it felt very slow. My problem was mostly getting enough O2.

    This was a mix of our "favorite sets". I struggled badly through the 16 100s. Pool heat really got to me today but I haven't been feeling 100% for a while.

    Played a pickup game of soccer yesterday and was fairly tired this morning. 800 on a 1:15 pace was not appealing. But Roger came back from spring break so I got a draft for the first 500 yards until I lost contact. Finished the remaining 300 yards fairly strong. Ended up at 9:54.

    Fly isn't as bad as it looks. Just recovery time before the next 125. First 25-50 yards after the faster 125s hurt really bad though. Workout originally called for 25 back/100 free for the 125s. We dropped the back stroke so that we could make the interval. For the timed 100 Fly, I felt great through 50 yards and then the pain kicked in.

    Still struggling to break 5:00 on the 400 w/ a drag suit on. Thought I might have had it today but came up a bit short again.
