I wanted to have a good 200 IM & sprints so yesterday I scratched the 1000 free

    50 fr
    Went 22.23
Really good swim I'm happy with it

    0.81 25.85 31.37 34.54 28.05
last year I was 2:00.5 at this meet in a full B70

I selected events to get as much rest as possible, but the 200 IM and 50 fly were back to back. I entered the IM with NT & got 3 heats of rest, so I was done warming down when heat 4 finished had a little time to rest for the ...

    50 fl
screwed up and swam in wrong heat
wrote heat 8 lane 5 on the back of my hand
Heat 7 was up, no one was in my lane
I asked the timer how many heats are there,
she said 7 so i hoped up, put on my cap and raced
    went 23.91

    thighs feel better, didn't hurt

    Zones
Had a nice workout this morning (details below)
Just as I was leaving my house
my mail box contained the new suit & caps I ordered
    drove to SA with beth
Told larry to scratch me from 1650 so icoul focus on 4 im, he checked me and Tyler in 4im
Took a wrong turn on way to Josh Davis pool
got to see many old and new swimming friends
Warmed up 3x before 4 im
Had to wait through 6 heats of 1650s

    Raced in H1 L4
Beside Tyler In 3, Ross Davis 2,
Phil sundahl in 6 & Beau Gilbert lane 5

    Race strategy was same

FL easy speed, barely k, breathe often, few SDKs

BK easy speed, save legs, not many SDKs, take extra breaths just before the 200

    FAST bk to Br turn

BR work it, great push offs, streamlines & pull outs, fast insweep & thrust, great kick and long streamline glides after each kick

FR 6 beat kick the whole way & sprint home, leave it all in the pool

    Wore new FS pro
Last yr I went 4:22 at zones in a full B70
    today's splits were:

    26.42
    31.03 0:57.45

    33.63 1:31.08
    32.90 2:03.98 66.53

    36.30 2:40.28
    37.76 3:18.04 1:14.06

    31.53 3:49.57
    28.91 4:18.48 60.44

    Good race,
got 3rd in heat behind Tyler & Ross,
they went 4:17, think Ross was 8/100ths faster than Tyler
    I saw them on Br
both went out faster than me
    Really hurt at end,
On fr 2 beat kicked first 50 of fr,
should gave been more aggressive there & 6 beat kicked the whole 100, very pleased swim & time

Had a nice dinner with my beth, max, & his beth
    Spending night in sa tonight
    Tomorrow I've got:

    500 fr & I checked in,
    might go for 200 split
    might swim race,
might skip, been 5:04 in practice

    200 bk, tough painful race
Want go out smooth & bring it home well

    100 fr
    Race

    200 Br,
    next to David Guthrie
Hope to have great turns & walls &

    maybe a relay or 2

  4. Sun Jan 30th 2011 HR Postal Swim take 2

    by , January 30th, 2011 at 08:27 PM (Ande's Swimming Blog)
    Sun Jan 30th 2011

    UT Swim Center
    Mary Coached
    noon to 1:15

    HR Postal Swim take 2
last week I went 5,130 in my 1 hr postal swim
I felt like I went out too hard, inconsistent
    I over heated
    wore an old FS Pro
stopped too often and too long
swam in a lane where I couldn't see the pace clock
    didn't shave and
started 2 minutes after the main group

Today I wanted to take another crack at it so see if I could improve
here's some of the corrections I attempted:
went out easier, stay steady,& no stopping
    wore a new FS pro
    shaved
swam in a lane where I could see the pace clock
asked my counter to signal each 500 &
even wore my goggle straps over the top of my ears &
    don't over heat

my counter Beth Rasmussen used tyler blessings new hour swim Iphone app.
    it's really cool

    warm up
swam easy 50's on 45 for 8 minutes
got out with 2 minutes to go
cleaned my gogs and got ready
my goal was to do 10 x 500 on 5:40

    here's how it went

    0500 05:37

    1000 11:13 5:36

    1500 16:48 5:35

    2000 22:24 5:36 11:11

    2500 28:00 5:36

    3000 33:37 5:37 11:13

3500 39:22 5:45 (this might not be correct)

    4000 44:48 5:26 11:11

    4500 50:18 5:30

    5000 55:46 5:28 10:58

went 5,390 yards in an hour
    pleased with this swim,
improved 260 yards from last week.

First i want to say a big thank you to Susan, Adrian, the officials and volunteers who ran this meet. It was great and I really appreciate their efforts. It was a small meet, but it was laid back, fun and well planned. The meet schedule provided 3 breaks to give swimmers a bit more rest. Also had a blast with my wife Beth, team mates and friends who went to this meet.

    SUN:

    400 fr
went for a 100 split time
    55.75 26.34 29.41

    should have split it closer,
went out a bit too hard, missed 1st and 3rd turn, turned too far not much push off

    but didn't get splits
took it out harder than I did in Tempe, did more SDKs but stayed relaxed till the breast
    improved from 2:16.2 at Tempe
    very pleased with this swim

    immediately swam down,
only had 1 200 IM heat & 4 50 fly heats of rest before I was back up on the blocks again for the

    50 fly
    went 26.7
    improved from 27.5 at tempe
swam beside Mike Varrozza who went 26.3 and tried to race him
really pleased with it and honestly felt a sense of euphoria & was really looking forward to our relay and my 50 bk lead off
probably got around 30 min of rest

    200+ mens 4 x 50 medley relay [nomedia="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rXouki4g4DY"]YouTube - 2010 200+ mens 4 x 50 medley relay[/nomedia]

continued to feel good and sort of wished I had one more swim after this one.

won high point for men 45 to 49

  8. MEET: Sat Nov 20 & Sun Nov 21 2010 Ron Johnston in TEMPE AZ

    by , November 22nd, 2010 at 01:36 PM (Ande's Swimming Blog)
    Sat Nov 20 & Sun Nov 21 2010

    swam in the
2010 Ron Johnson Invitational Arizona and Southwest Zone SCM Championship
    Tempe AZ

Had a great time at the meet, Tyler & David Guthrie from longhorn were there. Beth, my wife come with me with her Canon & shot several races

Saw many AZ friends, RJ was very nice well run meet, Thanks Katy! Sunday was a bit windy and rainy. Discovered the diving well was around 90 degrees which made life quite comfortable

Shaved but didn't feel strong or snappy in my races, so I've decided to really work on speed strength and rest to prepare for my next meet, Masters of South Central Regional SCM Championships Sat Dec 4th & Sun 5th in San Antonio, TX

    Sat Swims

    100 Fl 1:01.99
    28.37 33.62
    hoped to go faster
    died pretty bad

    50 Back 28.86
tyler went 28.84 so I got blessed

    400 IM 4:56.91
    1:08.00 0:31.60

    1:22.99 3:05.47 3:48.04
    1:08.87 4:24.18 4:56.91
tried to say smooth on FL BK
flipped my BK to BR turn and really worked the BR
2 beat kicked the first 50 on fr then 6 beat kicked

    50 Fr 25.76
did not feel real snappy, 4th race of the day

    Sunday

    100 IM 1:03.51
    not sure on split

    50 Fl 27.56

    200 IM 2:16.26
    ??
    1:05.71
    1:44.76 39.05
    2:16.26 31.50
my 200 IM race strategy was:

FL easy speed, barely kick, breathe every stroke,
should have worked the start & done more SDKs

BK cruise easy speed, light legs,
should have done 4 SDKs off each wall,
FAST BK to BR flip over turn

BR long pull outs & work it

FR sprint it home, 6 beat kicked the whole way
this was probably my best swim of the meet

Won High point for men 45 - 49
got a blue blue bag and a signed copy of Jeff Comming's book "Odd Man Out"

David Guthrie broke the 50 - 54 WR in the 200 BR

got a killer hotwire hotel deal on for this meet
stayed at the Hotel Tempe/Phoenix Airport InnSuites Hotel & Suites
    3 star hotel, free breakfast,
    nice happy hr
    5 miles from pool
    $43 a night, 56ish a day with taxes

got rent car on CarRentals.com with Advantage 19 bucks a day said we had a corolla, the girl worked hard to upgrade us and we bit on a convertible Mustang for $20 a day
had a blast riding around with the top down

Our plane was delayed on our flight home, we landed around 11:00, arrived home 12:30ish, saw a large live rattlesnake in the road close to our house went to bed around 2:00 so I skipped 5:15 AM practice and opted for Noon today

    by , May 23rd, 2010 at 10:28 PM (Ande's Swimming Blog)
    Sun May 23 2010 Nats Day 3

did early warm up & felt a sharp pain in my left lat shoulder

went to the massage tables but they weren't massage tables they were chiropractors in training
swam in lane 5, Stevenson in 4, tuchler in 6, hughey in 7
    hughey was 21.06 in 50 fr, 46 in 100, 23.19 in 50 fly so I knew he'd be fast

    decided just to work it
went out in 24.3 right next to stevenson,
    tuchler 24.8
    went 54.3

saw richie way ahead of me,
he went 52.1, new smoking NR
    tuchler went 53.8

went too hard on the front end of my IM shoulda breathed more on fly, gone slightly easier on fly & back then motored BR & free,
I strategized my 200 & it paid off I had a little more at the finish

    50 fr
    it sucked
was my worst swim of the meet
was super inspired to watch 65 yr old rich A
    go 22.10
but I felt fried & not too psyched and knew Richey was going to be awesome
    i went a very disappointing 22.8
but I head a great time swimming, hanging out with teamates & seeing friends

& now as SCY season ends, & LCM season begins, Unless we get the SCY time trial we're hoping for,

I'm asking myself the same questions

"What are my swimming goals for 2010 LCM & SCM?"

    &

"What do I need to do to swim faster?"

considering taking small a break & hope my shoulder situation improves.

I really need to lose weight, especially since full body rubber suits are a thing of the past.

    time to get:
faster: more speed training, less aerobic &
    stronger: more weight lifting

might scratch the 400 IM &
swim the 100 br, 200 FR or 100 bk instead

    SCM MEET DAY 2

University of the Incarnate Word (SCM) Masters Meet

    4301 broadway san antonio texas

    with Longhorn masters swimmers
birthday boy jon smiley, tyler, marcio, kristine, max, larry, fred lemaistre, Mike Varozza, & Todd

here was my plan going into the meet
    Sunday, November 22, 2009
    4 x 50 fr relay
    26 200 Freestyle 2:06.99 (go for a 50 fr split)
    30 50 Backstroke 27.99
    34 100 Freestyle 54.99 (SKIP)
    36 50 Butterfly 26.99
    4 x 100 fr relay
4 x 200 fr relay lead off 200, goal is to split it well

    arrived at 8:00 am

    felt good in warm up

wore a brand new Blue Seventy Nero Comp

    Men's 200-239 Short Course Meters 4 x 50 Freestyle Relay record was 1:40.71
    we Needed to ave 25.17

    4 x 50 fr relay
    25.76 Fred Lemaistre 55
    25.83 Jon Smiley 49
    24.94 Max Stinchcombe 52
23.64 Ande Rasmussen 46 jammed turn
    went 1:40.17

200 free but went for a
    50 fr split which was
    24.52
    jammed my turn

    50 BK
    went 27.59
mike V was 27.89, tyler was 28.3ish so he got razzed
    again

100 Fr skipped to rest up for my fly & relay

    50 FL
    went 26.3
bad turn, didn't lock my streamline on the pushoff after the turn

    Mens 200 - 239 400 Freestyle Relay record was 3:47.59
    Needed to ave 56.86
    [B]4 x 100 free relay[/B
    27.24 56.29 Fred LeMaistre
    27.18 57.89 jon smiley
    26.83 56.29 Max stinchcombe
    25.89 54.98 Ande Rasmussen
    went 3:45.45

kudos to my longhorn masters team masters who broke the 4 x 100 fr relay record for men 120 - 159
    26.15 53.61 marcio
    25.95 54.65 todd
    25.12 52.64 tyler
    23.97 50.97 mike V
    3:31.87

we were signed up to swim the 4 x 200free relay but opted to call it a day. I don't think we could have broken the record & it would have made us really tired

I come out of this meet thrilled to get another individual WR, plus we broke 3 National relay records for men 200 - 239.

I felt tired today, not as snappy as on Saturday. I'm second guessing myself, thinking I should have skipped my 50 fr split in the 200 free & just rested up for the 50 bk or the 50 fly. Today I had trouble with turns.
    Time to rest.
