    I wanted to try and get in more of a quality aerobic workout today. I think both sets were fairly hard and accomplished that. I got stuck in massive traffic on the way home on the parkway again. I need to find some alternate way to get home. GPS is no help. We have friends visiting this weekend who are about to arrive momentarily!

    I did get 5 swims in this week - the first time since early June!

    I didn't think I'd get anything in yesterday, but managed a shortish dryland session. Experimented some with my new kettleball. Went to Pitt today. Note to self: Do not go to Pitt on Friday; the traffic home is appalling at 2:30 pm, though perhaps there was an accident. It took me an hour to get home and I had to turn around and go back to coach the 5:30 pm workout. I was pretty bushed today for my swim, but feel like I got in some real quality work. I now know the meaning of TGIF. TGIF.

    I did not have much energy for a hard workout today. Did what I could. My stress level is sky high with the distressed Lil Fort and it's taking a toll on me. I think I will have to take tomorrow off just to get some errands done. Among other things I have to get finger printed for an FBI check so they can make sure I'm not a child molester. However, I think today might, just might (it's not bedtime yet), be the first day since school started without tears.

    600 various
    4 x 50 scull @ :10 RI
    10 x 25 shooter w/fins @ :40
    100 EZ

    Main sets:

    10 x 25 burst + cruise @ 1:00
    100 EZ

    Chowmi Set:
    4 x (50 AFAP from the blocks + 150 EZ) @ 5:00, one of each stroke
    back = 28 high
    breast = 35 flat
    fly = 27 low (terrible breakouts)
    free = 26 low

    I was rolling on the 59+, but I am still pretty darn happy with these times. I am going to have to do more off the blocks breakout work in fly. I think I need to angle upward more quickly than I currently do. I don't seem to sense the water very well.

    100 EZ

    3 x (AFAP broken 100s w/fins + 200 EZ)
    -- back (hold 11-12), IM (11/12/14/12), dolphin kick (11-12s)
    -- I started bonking on these from lack of food and lack of sleep

    Total: 3000

    Not much yardage today, but 650 of it was AFAP.

    Interesting article on Cross Fit. Yep, I agree. http://www.swimmingscience.net/2013/...-swimmers.html

    Made it to Pitt in the early afternoon. Better to come after 2:00 when the club team isn't there. But I had a lovely hike in the woods planned later with Jimby and Lil Fort and our dogs and Jeremy/Jocely and their new puppy. The puppies loved it! I'm a bit surprised our 9 week old puppy made it that far and was still ready to play. She's sleeping hard now! No swim tomorrow as I have to spend all afternoon waiting at the house for a delivery. I will try to squeak in some scarce drylands. I ordered a 25 lb kettleball. I need to hang my TRX too ...

    10 x 25 shooters w/fins @ :40
    100 EZ

    Main sets:

    Swimmers from the Pitt womens' team have been there when I've been there in the afternoon. They were going off the blocks (and rolling on the 59), so I decided to join in! Seems like there is no anti-block rule here!

    5 x 30 burst + cruise from the blocks

    backstroke kick -- kick for 20 seconds
    (I'm calling these 100s; felt like a weight workout)
    100 EZ

    Total: 3300

    I was pretty happy with this workout and loved the block work. My times on the 25s were very solid, so I haven't lost my raw speed at least. One of the college girls was kind enough to comment that I was in "great shape." haha. They're prolly not used to geezers using the blocks.

    Thinking about doing 1-2 of the meets in October in DC. The DCAC meet is Oct. 12 and the Sprint Classic is Oct. 27.

    Sunday:

    No swim. Mr. Fort was running the Erie marathon (got his BQ!) and I had two girls.

    Monday:

    Kind of a disaster. I didn't have time to get to Pitt so was going to try the Upper St. Clair rec center. I drove all the way there, getting lost, and realized my swim bags were in my car which Mr. Fort had taken to work. I hopped in for a short 45 min swim after coaching masters practice. I was too tired/stressed to do more.

    It was all I could do to summon up the energy for this workout. Things are just unbelievably awful right now. Lil Fort is very depressed and not coping at all. This is much worse than I expected, and I knew it would be hard. I don't know if and how much I can be mentally prepared for serious training right now. And the move isn't exactly easy for me either. I wish I could fast forward a few months ...

    It's been a busy few days. Lil Fort is cheerier at the moment because of her new puppy and her best friend visiting for the weekend. Mr. Fort (and best friend's dad) are in Erie for the Erie marathon, hoping to get their BQs. Mr. Fort was going along well for awhile, but his hamstring has been bothering him again. He may give up marathoning if this one is a bust. He keeps insisting that swimming is so injury free. He has no clue.

    I know it doesn't seem like much, but I am bushed. My body is not yet used to all out 100s. I will go easy tomorrow; supposed to meet up with Jimby. And we are getting our new puppy tomorrow!

    These are the main sets I gave to Pitt Masters tonight with A intervals. They are all very nice, but do not yet understand the true meaning of "fast" and "AFAP". heehee. Of course, I'm not sure I could even do that workout myself!

    Didn't want to overdo the speed today, but still got in a decent workout.

    The big news is that we are getting a puppy. This is sooner than we had planned, but we are hoping it will help Lil Fort who is still miserable. Hopefully, she can't resist a cute new puppy. I fear this will put the kabbosh on me re-starting drylands in a serious way. I don't want to be away for the many hours it takes to do a dryland + swim double. I'll try to do core work at home. Maybe I'll get a kettleball to use in our downstairs exercise room. Getting adjusted to a new life is not for sissies. I am counting on poor sleep for awhile with the new puppy.

    I'm feeling pretty dead, and that after a day off yesterday. I think I went from 0 to 100 mph last week, doing a lot of speed workouts after a couple months of maintenance cruising. I guess I should have eased back into the speed work more gradually. The 100 IMs felt horrible today. I think the temp being 4-5 degrees cooler than I'm used to may affect my lungs slightly too.

    The latest Rushall article on USDT: http://coachsci.sdsu.edu/swim/bullet...0NON-TAPER.pdf. What do you guys think?

    Was thinking of using this workout for distance day at Pitt. What do you all think? Is it distancey enough?

    I wasn't feeling much like speed work after yesterday's workout and some mental fatigue. You need to be really dialed in mentally to go true AFAP. So glad it's the weekend. It has been a really rough week with Lil Fort. She has a soccer game today. Hoping to get her out of the house now for a run with Mr. Fort. Endorphins good!

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Finally swam in a nice pool today -- Pitt -- for the first time since June. Deep, cool, digital clocks everywhere. Ahhhh ... Also tried doing some real AFAP work for the first time in awhile. I felt pretty discombobulated. My breakouts were also atrocious. Shallow pools create bad habits, I guess. Unfortunately, that was the only decent part of the day. Lil Fort is not adapting well. The magnitude of change is great -- new city, new house, new school, new everything. She had her first XC race today with her middle school team. She tried to refuse to race and claimed she didn't feel well. Her coaches (who are great) somehow jollied her into it and she did win. I was worried she was going to tank it on purpose. So there is no happiness in mommy land right now. I think it's going to take a looong time. I'm not sure how focused I'll be on training until she's more settled.
    This was first back to back dryland + swim double since .... May? April? I was pretty tired after, especially since I had done a hard workout the day before. I'm kind of sore today. I noticed that I did 11 spins between 60-90 minutes in August. I can't say it helped my swimming even one little bit!
    Tonight is my first night coaching Team Pitt Masters. It's stroke night and this is the workout the A lanes are doing. It's somewhat different than what they're used to doing ... hope I'm not unpopular.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    Got in a swim over the long weekend, and it wasn't too bad a one. I couldn't tell if the air quality was poor or I am just out of shape. But my lungs were burning. Hoping to meet up with Jimby tomorrow. Wed night is my first night coaching Team Pitt. I will become expert at writing middle distance stroke workouts. I will probably stay and swim there that night. I am so very much looking forward to not crashing on the bottom of the pool or looking for ledges (Sewickley's bottom goes abruptly from 12 feet deep to 5 feet deep and I always worry about crashing into it off the wall).

    First day of school for Lil Fort tomorrow. She has been dreading it. Unlike Teen Fort, she is not a natural extrovert. Teen Fort is doing well in Cali. She had a great time on her beach camping freshman trip at Point Mugu and is about to embark on her college career (majoring in biochem) tomorrow.
