I just ordered a new technical racing suit! I haven't in several years, gloating how I my existing ones have lasted so long. But alas, they are way too stretched out and so used that they show that disintegration like your old lycra suits used to! Yuck!
*Only interested in Speedo
*Don't like the new closed back suit. I think it would make me look thick, fat, and sausage-like. Also the most expensive at $449.
*Don't like the colored suits. They would make my colored thigh look fat.
*Do want an Elite 2. Mostly because it's the newest. Must be in black.
*Comfort straps are intriguing. Is it worth the difference between $395 and $429? Yes, I think so. And I don't think they would make me look fat.

Sprint the fly bits.
Now, this sounds easy as you only do 5 x 25's fast fly for the entire round, but for some reason I was dying, just absolutely dying through this set. Maybe because I was doing it right. It was one of those days where if someone poked you with a pinky, you'd probably just collapse. And I was really irritated with my lane. The girl behind me was doing all free. So was the next guy. Then the next guy was doing backstroke with fins. Then the next guy was swimming freestyle with a snorkel swimming up the backstroker's backside. I thin there might have been someone else after that but maybe it was just a manifestation of a composite irritating swimmer.
I have decided that I am not going to swim tomorrow or Wednesday, if I am going to be in this bad of a mood and irritated with my lanemates!
I am sooo mad!!!
I entered the South Central zone meet, then went to make my hotel reservation. I have stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn, The Woodlands, many times and was all set to do so again. So I searched for it, and THOUGHT I went directly to their website. I booked an awesome rate ($107 plus fees, etc), and then realized upon getting the confirm that it was with some service called Reservation Counter, and not directly with the hotel! I swear, the website looked JUST like it! So a few hours later, I called the hotel directly to make sure they had my reservation. They did, but it still irks me! And the web address was so similar that you know they were trying to fool you!!!
For those who want the finer points - remember your reservation is with the service, and not necessarily with the hotel itself. This service could just take your money and not make a booking. Or go out of business or file bankruptcy and not make your reservation. You would hope, but you aren't necessariy going to get your hotel room. And it cost a whopping $12 more for their stupid service vs. booking through the hotel itself, grrrr!!!!!!!
In the end i'll be alright, worst case rarely happens, and plus I used my credit card, so if something does go wrong and I end up with no room, I don't have to pay it. But you just don't want that aggravation going into your big zone meet! I guess this also shows how being a bankruptcy trustee, you know the finer points of how these things can happen!
In training news, i'm continuing my kick/IM/sprint days. I've gone back over Rich Abaraham's 2 articles from 2010 and 2011 on racing. The part i'm paying attention to is which zone you are in. I think of it as 3 zones - pure power zone (anaerobic; like powering through the 1st 15 meters of a race, or a 1/2 length blow out sprint), zone 2, which is racing zone; and zone 3, which is the "80% yardarage zone". And even though they aren't mutually exclusive, you have to train the appropriate amount of time in the right zone (zone 2), and not be stuck in zone 3 for me as a short sprinter (50/100's).

4 x 25's 1 each stroke (.35)
2 x 50 on 1:05 (fly/back and breast/free)
1 x 100 IM fast on 2:30
The first 2 rounds I did the set. But I found myself more in zone 3 than in zone 2. I was just trying to get through the IM at the end. So the next 2 sets I started to drop the IM bits and did easy free instead, to set myself up for a truly fast 100 IM. It worked! The 1:14 was my best 100 IM in practice!
I'm glad I made that decision part way through the set to make it meaningful for me. I think it's a great set to do as proscribed if i'm building a base for the 400IM, or the 200IM. But this year it's all about the 100IM!
I've been kicking. ALOT. I got sick of trying to work through my freestyle sprint. From 2008-2011, i've been moaning of why I can't break 24 (24.4-24.1). From 2012 to present, I have only gone 25.3-25.6. I've decided to give it a break and do something different!
My new thing is to kick at least 1 full workout. I swim 3x per week. So on Mondays, I totally kick it. I usually use my Speedo Optimus fins and kick with or without a board (without is faster, so I use these if the interval is really tight). I started out by moving down a lane, going last, and dropping the last 50 if needed. But now I worked my way back up to staying in my own lane and making the swim intervals. It's fun to have my head out of the water and I can look around, but usually I am huffing and puffing and I have to concentrate really hard to kick fast.
My conditioning is really good because of all this self-inflicted kicking. (Probably why I could neg split a 200 back). Just like all the stories you hear about people getting injured, only kicking for months, then coming back with awesomeness because they were forced to kick so much - that's me in a mini-way. The other benefit is the alternate days I actually do most of the whole workout. Even the NEXT lane over marvels and makes comments about how I did the entire set. My arms almost always feel fresh because they were in a perpetual streamline the day before.
Day 2 of the week I try to make sure I get in one of the IM days (Tues or Thurs). Since I am swimming more events, it just makes sense to do more stroke work, plus I really don't want to go down the freestyle path unless absolutely necessary. I also find an unaccustomed desire to swim it all, swim fast, and with a positive can-do attitude. It's a great motivator when you know this is the only practice you are going to swim the 1 hour with your arms!
Day 3 is a mixed bag. I also make sure that I get in short, burst, pure sprinting and/or kicking, no matter what. If the workout isn't sprint, i'll modify the set, or if there is a set in particular I want to do, then I will swim on my own.
I really like the 3 days per week focus. It makes each workout more purposeful and I can do different things! I'll probably stick to this for awhile. Next season, I may have to do more swimming bits, since i'd like to attempt the 200 free and 400 IM. In 2015 it will be a full 20 years since I last swam a real 200 free, and 10 full years since I swam the 400 IM!
I'm still doing P90X3! I am on the final month! It's so much fun that I am going to do another round after I finish this one! But I haven't lost any weight. Probably because I haven't changed my eating habits and I really didn't start it as a weight loss program. I love junk food too much.
Hello everyone! I have been swimming just as much (or as little?) as ever, but just not blogging about it!
Yours truly is going after QUANTITY this year! Feeling so crummy in the 50 free, I figure it's ok to switch gears and swim a schlew of events, hoping to hit some good times and/or top tens along the way! I have 174 TTT, inclusive of the preliminary SCM 2013. So with 26 to go, it's time to ramp up different events! Goal is to reach 200 mark ASAP.
I am going to both the South Central zone meet and infilitrating the AZ state meet, and yahoo, the official meet entry is finally UP!
This weekend I swam some "off events" at the DAMM one day SCY meet. It's hard to get really focused. My older daughter was at a sleepover, so there's that low grade anxiety and "on call" feeling of picking her up right around my last event. My younger daughter was "getting an award" at the Texas Black Film Festival - she entered the Sixth Floor Museum (of JFK shooting fame)'s youth oral history challenge and was a "finalist", where they included part of her interview in the official video!
Anyway, here is how I did:

200 back 2:19.1
100 fly 1:04.1
The 200 back was the best. That will stand for a top ten, under 2:20 has always made it safely w/large cushion room. I can scratch that event off my list! The shocker was I went out in a 1:10, and I think it was like, a 1:10.4. So someone do the math, but I had to really boogie on the back end to get under 2:20!
The 100 breast/fly would make top ten - in a moderate year. But I don't know if that will be the case. Yours trulys' analysis is that no one is aging out, but at least 3 faster 44-now-45 girls are aging up, so I am resigned to swimming these 2 events again.
Given I have 2 big meets for top ten chances, I envision myself napping for long periods in my deck chair and lurking in the hot showers at the Woodlands (SC zones). It's going to be my 4 x 50 meet, plus whatever other events I can get for top tens. But I am going to approach this with Fortness - that is, make the 50's really, really count, and not worry too much about the quantity of events. I need to swim really fast to make 50 TTT's, so I don't want to get to piggy about other events!
Long time no blog post!
I got the flu right after the Christmas relay meet, started feeling bad on Saturday December 14th. I still don't feel 100%, but I can do modified workouts and manage my rest so I don't overdo it on my comeback.
I started P90X3 and it's awesome! I must say, 30 minutes is really just right. There's no need to do more or longer which I think is just diminishing return at around the 45 minute mark. The hard part is doing any of these programs AND swimming at the same time.
I've been workout out on my own because of the flu and then doing P90X3. I'd rather keep up the speed over yardage or reps, so here's a few of my main sets:
New Years Eve:
4 x 100's on 5 minutes, with TYR Burners, SCM
1st straight 1:12
2nd 50/10/50 1:08
3rd 50/10/25/5/25 1:04
4th 4 x 25, 5 secs 1:02
Day after New Years (Today):
4 x 50's from a dive, no interval, but around 3-4 mins.
I was quite spent after those sets, but glad I did not waste my time with 200's and 100's of no real speed. That would have been garbage yardage for me. I just want to try to keep up my speed since I have no energy to spare, and i'm pretty tired with 2000 to 2500 total SCM.
If I don't feel much better, i'll probably strictly adhere to 4 x 50's, the 100 IM, and 100/200 backstroke. Anything else just feels so terribly difficult. I've already swum a 100 fly this season, so I don't feel the pressure to have to swim it again if I don't feel up to it.
I am also so woefully heavy - a whopping 143 lbs now - so I need to really watch the junk food for awhile, or at least moderate it to get back under 140. With P90X3, swimming consistently, and a bit of self-control, surely that is good for an "easy" first 5 lbs?
Happy post thanksgiving! Chowsh is here visiting and getting bossed around by yours truly! Swimming-wise, just maintaining this week and trying to stay in good to top condition through the New Years.
My times from our SCM meet were relatively strong - I now have 2 x #2 times, and 2 x #3 times, so what a bonus for 4 more TTs on my way to 200 lifetime TTs! I suspect they will hold in the top ten, but maybe move down a few places by the close of the season.
I will not be able to swim my big swim meet in December. I will be going to Pittsburgh, PA and Washington, DC for a memorial service 12/05 to 12/10.
Instead, I will use the DAMM relay meet as a tune-up to bridge the gap from Nov to my next swim meet, which who knows when that will be. I requested the 200 free, fly, back, and breast relays, and to put my in anything else. I won't wear my fast suit, but i'll take racing seriously and do my best effort. They have almost always used the electronic timing system, in the event another team wants to get times to count for USMS. I hope they do this year, so I can get my lead off or split time as a gauge.
I tried a quasi-race pace set, but in retrospect, the morning after Thanksgiving wasn't the best time to start! Yours truly felt like a beached whale whilst in the water, with peanut sized lungs due to overcapacity Thanksgiving food still making its way through my system!
The set I tried was
4 times through, 1 set each stroke:
100 straight swim, working on the turns;
4 x 25's race pace on :30
easy 50 in between; total time 3 minutes
The free wasn't too bad - 14 15 15 16
The fly was a complete fail 16 18 18 20
The back was off before the 1st 25 18 20 20 20
The breast was who knows 21 23 23 23
While we have done fast 25's on :30 for years, it's completely different when you go that elusive extra to go true race pace. Obviously I have a long way to go! And that's just 4 measly 25's!!!
Then I did "Rich Abrahams" starts - start with 4 strokes, 6, strokes, 8 strokes.
Then I did a 50 free fast
Well, i'd like to say it was Thanksgiving eating and playing host, but then again, there is always some handicap, and I haven't gotten any faster. How many times have I posted I did a :30? Ugh. Well, at least i'm not getting slower.

I swam next to Stewart Carroll in the 50 back and 100 IM! I swam between him and another really fast guy in the 100IM. I think they went 1:02, 1:04, so I thought I was sucking big time. But lo, I turned around and saw the 1:12, which was super strong and better than I was expecting for my 5th event!
I'm a bit bummed about the 50 frees, as I thought I could go faster. It is so hard getting up in the pool where I practice. Motivation is a bit tough!
I am hoping to go 24.99 or better at the local A meet in 3 weeks. I'm going to swim a "full" line up - 100 back/50 free; 100 fly/100 free. That is tough for me as I don't swim 100's but all I need are solid A times, so the times should be very do-able.

In North Texas, we have a "first meet free" ongoing promotion that our current President enacted when she took office. I don't disagree with it, as any promotion is a good thing to get people to participate.
But I wish there was also a frequent punchcard, honored by either NT LMSC or perhaps all the LMSCs within a zone, and then you get some prize at each award level, like a patch at 10 meets, a towel at 20 meets, a bag a 50 meets, and a knesskin at 100 meets! There would be a firm start date, such as 01/01/14 and then the punches go into effect. No retroactive punches.
The former only rewards the newbie, and there just aren't that many! How about giving me a reward for sticking around and registering USMS YOY since 1992! We don't get any prizes, and I just don't think someone who's never swum a meet should get something for free when I don't.

I was disappointed with the 50 free as I thought I could rather easily go under 25 and get a current season Sectionals cut (24.99). I have a current bonus cut (25.79) but on principle I like to get a current season time.
The fly was awesome! I haven't swum the 100 fly since 01/2011, so it's been a long time, and I had to relearn fly after a long break post-gall bladder surgery. They say you recover in about 6-8 weeks, but my guts felt like spilling out of my belly button for months afterwards, which is why I swam so much backstroke last year.
The back was just ok. I think I have much more in me, but my timing was off and so I was resigned to gutting it out at the end of the race.
I don't know my splits yet, but that will indicate the "quality" of the swims.
I don't think I had any mental obstacles, as I felt ready to go, even with various "handicaps". This always happens, so it didn't seem like a big deal to overcome all the Friday hurdles for the 50 free. But maybe it did affect me physically? I had a normal work week. I did normal drop off/pick up at school. I went to work. I ran errands. I helped Helen with her homework. I sat in Friday night traffic on the way to the meet. I swam in shallow pool, heat 1 lane 1 at 7:45pm for the 50 free. So maybe all those things did make me more tired than usual. Anyway, i'm looking forward to swimming the next USA meet in December!
Next up: DAMM SCM Masters meet! This one is going to be to just gut it out at 8AM in the morning for some USMS top ten times. I entered the 50 fly and 50 free, and they are back to back events. Also the 100 free just in case I want to get a split request, but that's back to back with the 50 back. And I threw in an entry for the 100 IM, since it's one price entry so you might as well enter 5 and see if you want to show up for that 100 IM at the end.
Here are my goal times:
30.99 or better 50 fly
27.99 or better 50 free
27.99 or better 2nd chance 50 free
32.99 or better 50 back
1:14 or better 100 IM
I'll go about 95% on the fly and hope that's enough to get a top ten time. But I need to turn around in about 7 minutes for the 50 free and go sub 28 if possible. Then take a mini nap, hang out in the ladies room, take a hot shower, then another mini nap in 35 minutes to get up for the last 100free/50back/100 IM. I estimate i'll have to do all those 3 in about 25 minutes total.

So technically, I was out of the range!
Consider it a penalty for setting too modest a goal time by .01!
I am going to swim our 1-day SCM meet, and the order of events totally sucks for 4 x 50ers. The fly/free and breast/back are back to back. So i'll do that anyway, and i've been "training" to go fast 50's in that order within 2 to 4 minutes. If 2 mins, then I typically do a 25/5sec/25. If longer, then I do a blast-o 50. I have been going 31/32 on the flys, and 29/30 on the frees; 40/41 on breast and 35/36 backs, so I think I can still muster a strong 2nd 50 for each pair in the meet. I'll probably also do the 100IM, and just gut it out with anything I have left. If I can do pretty solid 1:19 and under in workouts, I would say that's anywhere from 1:09 to 1:14 in a meet.
Hello! Long time no blog!
I've been trying to keep up the speed and peppy-ness even though i've been so busy and traveling for a wedding. I'm tired and just spent all the time. Anyway, I figure a fast 50 here and there is better for me that trying to do full workouts.
Today I went
28.9 on the coach's watch. Nice it was under 29, but about 1 second off where i'd like to be on a coach's GO. I'd like to be 28.0 or better. I'd say today's time puts me at a mid to high 27 in a real race. Since I went 28.6LCM, I think that's about right. Also, my competitive advantage is SCM, since I train it year round!
I am happy to report that I am getting my fly back! I have been swimming fly with fins sometimes, and that seems to really help! I went 1:18 and 1:17 yesterday and today on a straight 100 fly, without completely killing myself. I think that's pretty good and would translate to about a 1:12 to 1:08, ranging from a strong but controlled swim to a gut-busting time if my life depended on it. Given that a 1:12 woudl make top ten, i'll lean towards 1:10 to 1:12.
Oddly, my back is totally sucky right now.
In breaststroke news, that wonderful double kick sensation is a reality, and totally no benefit of a doubt disqualifable. Not sure how I got into that habit, but I have decided to just brazenly do whatever my body is going to do, DQ be darned! I asked my coach to watch it and see if I could still pass as legal, and the consensus was no, not at all.
My first meet will be a USA meet Nov 8-10. I've entered the 50 free, 100 fly, and 100 back. The 50 free is on a Friday night, and hopefully i'll be able to go under 25.0 as I didn't break that last year!

On Friday, I got a haircut and an eyebrow wax. Then I had an awkward amount of time, too much hang around, so I decided to swim a quick sprint workout on my own. I went nearly exactly the same times as the week before, but my fly is finally starting to come back:

then the team came in. I decided to stay for a bit and loosen up. But then, I stayed for the entire workout since I really liked the sprint sets! So I was actually in for a whopping 1 hour and 45 minutes!!!!
The main sets I liked were

I did these fly and/or breast
I'm bummed out I won't be racing until Nov. There there are too many choices over limited weekends! I have also decided that during the school year, drylands/vasa once a week would be good. I just can't do more without bumping into recovery days! So here's my plan:

Tues - strong/sprints
Wed - easy swim or off
Thurs - off; stretch only
Fri - strong/sprints
Sat - drylands/vasa
Sun - easy swim or off
Hooray school has started, our new assistant is working out great, and Baylor is open again and hopefully things will settle into the noon workout routine again.
I've been quite tired but the good news is I don't feel like I am completely starting over again. Here are the highlight main sets from this week. Of course I am modifying most things, and it's all about the 4 x 50's!
4 rounds, 1 each stroke:

pushoff + 4-6 strokes fast (which is actually at or past the 12/5)
then a fast 50 from the block

I made myself do this set. For each set, the actual workout was 2 x 100 IMs, then a 200 IM descend the 200 IMs (3 sets). I stayed and did the 4th set as the free.

This set I liked because there is no truth like the truth of speed play. It's one thing to plod along at 80%, but very different to get up and go go go, especially on the last bits.
I'm going to focus on the 4 x 50's and it makes it funner to train because I can mix up the strokes.
I plan on swimming 3 USA meets in the Fall (Oct, Nov, Dec)

and a very outside chance of a masters travel meet to Az for the Ron John, 11/23.
But I just don't know for sure. I may not feel like it. But I would like to visit my sister!
We are 1 week into the annual 2 week Baylor Fitness Center pool cleaning. It seems like forever. So in the meantime, i'm swimming LCM at SMU at evening and/or weekend practices.
It's hard to say whether I am swimming well or not. The sets are quite different and honestly I don't really feel any need to prove myself, swim fast, or do anything extra special. In fact, I am now swimming in lane 4 to avoid the awful group dynamic and so I am leading the lane. I estimate I put in 87.5% blended effort, and modify some, but not as much as i'd like. Just trying to get through the next week without losing conditioning, sprint mode, or feel for the water. But I am also very conscious that I am only "treading water" and not making any attempt to "train" or "further fine-tune".
I'm not sure how fast I am going. LCM just doesn't translate. Here are some sample times:

A few 50's strong 33 high
100's kick - strong effort 1:18 with optimus fins; otherwise 45 ave per 50 on 150's kick.
So I don't think that's great, and i'm thinking the best thing to do is put on my TYR Burners and chase my swim times. Or wear my Speedo optimus fins and go my swim times.
Hooray for me! I decided to enter the last local LCM USA-S meet because I didn't want to go all summer without racing. So even though I have barely swum any LCM, I decided to just go anyway.
100 back - 1:14.2
This was a very good swim! I haven't swum LCM 100 back since 2007. I think it's my best time. I felt really good about this swim because I know I can do better. Rarely swim it, didn't swim LCM, had to swim in the slowest heat with my SCY time, so was all by my lonesome.
50 free: 28.6 (I think.)
I was really happy about this. I didn't die until about the 42 mark - and that's amazing for me! I actually felt pretty good! It was a bit slow, but in line with what i've done the last year.
BRECKENRIDGE! That is the one time I go for mileage. I am trying to make the 50 mile club AFAP. But you can only count yardage you do at the Breck rec center. And I can only swim about 3600, which is 2 miles. So it will take awhile and several trips to rack up 25 times to the pool.
I was fascinated by the book review of The Sports Gene by David Epstein in this past weekend's WSJ (c7). I do certainly believe a big reason I can swim as fast as I do is not because of training, but because of my genes.<br><br>What would really be nice to know, kind of like how every woman would like to know the absolute drop dead date at which her reproductive sell-by date is over (That sounded so Jim Thortonian), is exactly what am I doing that is a waste of my time - that is, what is it in my genes that no additional training helps at all. And also, what things could I be doing that gives the greatest percentage improvement? <br><br>Until then, I suppose i'll just keep doing what I am doing now. Which is even less, given there might only be a 50% chance that what I am doing is going to be better than what I was born with. <br><br>For example, I was out of the water for an entire week, but yesterday I still posted a 30 in a 50 from a dive. So being out a week didn't hurt or help me. I was very happy about that, since it just reinforced my belief that my genes enable me to be lazy and squander my talent.<br><br>My sister says, how can you be 10 seconds faster than me in a 50 free??? And I say, how can the elite swimmers be 5 seconds faster than me in a 50 free (LCM)???? Partly genes, partly focused training, but the real issue is - how do you know what element is the genes, and what are the components you actually have to train?

I made great effort to give everything extra punch today!
That's it! Tomorrow massage and maybe a bonus swim. I go on vacation all of next week, so who knows what I will do?

Between last blog and now, I did 2 x 50 frees and went 29 on both, perhaps 28 high on one of them. Coach watched my last one and totally started me late, so a big discussion between coach and lanemates on how much time to "give back' to me. Regardless, it is disappointing to not actually see the 29. It totally sucks to have a coach say takeyourmarkgo! That is not one word, thank you very much.
1. I looked strong! This is not typical.
2. I had my head buried! Yes, I think I was even tucking my chin! That needs immediate correction.
3. My shoulders and head were plowing through the water. Yes, I felt at one point, I am so low in the water and my shoulders are plankton feeding....
Part of it is how tired I am, but also I feel so heavy in the water. And really tight all over. Bloated, too. Like an accordian past it's recommended PSI level.

2 sets, 1 pull :45 and 1 swim :40

I held 16's on the pull and 15-16 on the swims
I did like the last 4; they were quite challenging.
I have a long way to go on these. I felt like I was "barely hanging on" instead of embracing the last 4. As much as it was hurting me, I knew it was still my competitive advantage and hurting everyone else more.
I think i'm doing too much filler bits. One of the sets was 6 x 100's and then 300 this or that, and really, I should have been doing starts or turns only. I was so confused on the interval and completely swimming into oblivion. I'll have to really watch out for anything that even whiffs of possible filler bit material. I should doubt even 50 sets unless they are on 2 min or more. Yes, that's it! I should doubt everything to give me the confidence to do nothing so I can swim faster. I feel too broken down now, and just limping my way along with no improvement.
Wowie, I should have rested today but I wasn't disciplined enough to do my own thing. I went to workout and here's the damage:

last back was 1:01 which is slow. yikes! I was doing 57-58 just earlier this week/ast week, and that was at the 100! the IM bits were equally bad - I could do sub 1:00 but today only mustered a 1:04!!

Here is where I know I need work! Rarely do I actually do the 4 x50's all out, and considering they are my main events, I guess I need to start doing this set more!

I'm glad I did the 4 x 50's stroke as it really shows how not 4x 50 trained I am. However, I am sort of disappointed i didn't do a recovery day today. I do solemnly swear to do nothing tomorrow. Except maybe yoga/pilates. And next week, i'm totally going to swim way faster than these times. They suck!!!

The 100's back were quite strong. The interval was too fast for me to do all 3 x 50's and have enough recovery for punchy 100's, so I bagged the 50's and made big effort on the 100's. Those are solid times but i'd like to get even faster. I'm in the very fast backstroke time zone, but still off modest freestyle times, where i'd like to be, and that's pushing 1:12 on the last one with this much emphasis. Lots of room for improvement!
Still doing the adult fitness class! It is the surrogate for conditioning, so that I can focus mostly on speed in the pool.
Next up: backstroke drills and specific backstroke strength. I'll probably do some rotation drills, focusing on connecting the body and core strength to keep alignment. Also - starts! Will play around more with start position and continue nestle plunging in the meantime.
