Just keeping it real . . . .
Didn't realize I hadn't been on here in so long. Swam like crap this morning. Felt like I was swimming in sludge. It's amazing how much can change in a week. Last Wed, the water temp was 78, and I swam really well. Monday I swam well also. Today the air temp was back down to 38 again, water temp back up to 81, and I felt like a salmon going upstream. Got the distance in, but the quality just wasn't there.
300-200-100 Pull w/20 sec rest btwn ea
10 x 50 non-free @ 1:00 (some of these were breast/free by 25's)
4 x 400; last 2 pull
6 x 150 swim/stroke or kick/swim
What happened to March? Geez, Spring is actually upon us, and it seems like Valentine's Day was just last week! Warmer air again this morning, thank goodness - the 38 degree temp on Wed morning was a nasty shock to the system. ATAC still off - so we've had the entire 50M pool to ourselves for 2 weeks now. They come back on Monday, and I'm looking forward/dreading that! Swam with Jenna & Grady today - Sela & Marci slept in, I guess. Did butterfly for the first time since, basically October - with zoomers - and only for a 25, but I did do it, and I felt good, no shoulder pain at all. (Yea!)
"The Rob" set:
4 x 50
3 x 100 IM
2 x 150
200 IM (or IM twitch)
1 min rest
2 x 150 IM twitch
3 x 100
4 x 50 kick
(No clock so no intervals)
3 x 100 w/pull buoy only
3 x 100 pull w/buoy & paddles
3 x 100 w/fins and paddles
Total: 4500 LCM
Trying to find a way to challenge myself w/out going to meets is really hard. I don't think there is a single meet that coincides with my free weekends until October. Been thinking about giving myself a challenge & actually doing the dumb "goal sets" with the kids on some of the Saturday practices this summer. I hate competing against Olympians, seriously. Even tho I won't be in their heat, they will see me come in at my pathetically slow time, and even tho they probably aren't actually watching me, I still feel like they are, and judging. (And they probably couldn't care less, lol!!)
Had my 2nd accupuncture about 5 days ago, which I didn't really enjoy this time, because he gave me a "massage" which hurt like, well, it hurt a lot. I felt bruised until about yesterday, but swimming wise, on Monday I was fine, Tuesday was fine, today was pretty dang good, actually. So yes, I would recommend accupuncture, but I think I'm done for now. It's too bad I don't have a meet this weekend, darn it.
10 x 200; descending intervals
2 x 50; sprint the 25, cruise to wall
So I had my very first accupuncture tx today, and I was totally amazed -- you don't feel the needles going in at ALL. We shall see if this helps the old shoulder, and other things. He told me a lot of stuff that I'm not sure I buy into, but hey, if it helps, why not?
very few kids this AM, Spring Break officially begins this afternoon, I guess, so workout was optional.(?). Had my own lane, as Jenna & Sela weren't there either. finally got my distance back up to 5000, in part because I was in the mood, and in part because my arm was only slightly achy this morning - hurt a bit during the first 1200, but then I was fine.
600 pull, speed play by 50s
300 kick, 75 hard, 25 easy
4 x 200 pull @ 3:05. -was supposed to be 3:00, but that's where I was coming in, so . . . . .
12 x 50 @ 1:00, descend 1-3
100 easy (kids got out here)
10 x 150, free/stroke/free
400 warm down
Oddness, my shoulder doesn't hurt today. Very odd
5 x 100 pull @ 1:30
4 x 100 kick @ 2:15
5 x 300 @ 5:30 or 6:00, alt stroke/free by 50
3 x 500, pull no paddles, pull w/paddles, and breast/free (cool down)
total: 4700 LCM
Swimming gently today, as I was really noticing my shoulder, and the set wasn't super challenging, and the other person in my lane was happy to go pokey as well.
500 pull (w/minimal effort, as I was warming up)
5 x 100 kick @ 2:15
12 x 100 @ 1:40 (told you the set wasn't super challenging)
500 odds and ends with fins to preserve the shoulder
Total 3500 LCM
I think Terry was easy on them/us because the kids had Sr.Champs this past weekend, and this was essentially their first day back in long course in 3-1/2 weeks. PLUS, it was raining. I imagine next week he'll step it up a bit.
I am soooo looking forward to the time change and the temperature change. I truly pity those who live up north. My son, in very northern Tennessee (1 mi south of Kentucky) had 5 inches of ICE beneath 10 inches of snow on Monday. What a nightmare. And his apartment complex didn't do anything to help dig the parking lot out, so he got together a posse and spent 7 hours digging/shoveling and picking at ice on Monday. Down here in Tallahassee, that same day, it was 71 and sunny.
***AND, I made an appt with an accupuncturist! That should be interesting! Hoping to "unfreeze" my shoulder sooner than Mother Nature was planning.
Ahhh! Back to my old pool! And its LCM! Yipes! But it wasn't too bad, we were only out of the pool for 3 weeks, so hopefully a week of torture, and then I'll be used to it again.
6 x 200 @ 3:15 (held below 3:00 the entire time, yea me!)
8 x 50 kick @ 1:10
8 x 25 4-cycle speed play on :30
2 x 150 Pull
3 x 100 Pull
Total: 4000 LCM
**Rediscovered something this morning. When I emphasize my pull properly, the T drops and the feet rise, making my stroke more efficient, thus moving me faster with no increase in effort. This was a lovely "ah ha" moment this morning & I am so excited to get back after it - but tomorrow I have an early dentist appt, and will have to miss swimming entirely! Argh.

Mother Nature is playing tricks on us again. Nearly a full week of temps in the 70's, and she pulls a fast one last night and drops it to 28 degrees. Of course pool management decided that meant the pool had to be warmer, so we got to have 85 degree water. Fortunately the people from Premier were not allowed in their pool (if it's colder than 40 they won't open the pool) so I had this fast guy, Chuck, to spur me on [to greatness] hahaha. When I was doing 1:20's, he was doing them on the 1:15 and holding a 1:10. I comfort myself with the facts: a) he is a MAN, and b) he is only 45. Plus, I had done 2200 before he even got in, so I was more tired, right? (Why don't I feel better?)When I did my 200 easy at the end, he did one all out & did a :58 from a push. Most impressive.
1000 warm-up (100 free, 25 back/breast repeat)
3 x 300 Pull w/50 breast between each, first one no paddles
2 x 100 easy
100 kick @ 2:00
2 x 100 "IM" @ 1:30
3 x 100 @ 1:20
4 x 100 back/free w/zoomers @ 1:25
5 x 100 @ 1:20
4 x 100 kick @ 2:00
3 x 100 @ 1:20
2 x 100 "IM" @ 1:30
Total: 5200 SCY
Shoulder was GREAT in the water, got in 5100 SCY. Then once I stopped moving, got showered and dressed, I noticed the entire capsule is just throbbing again. Geez. Well I dealt with 2-1/2 years of elbow pain I guess I can deal with 18 months of frozen shoulder pain. At least I know what it is, and I know that the only thing that helps is time. I may not be a very fast swimmer, but I am a stubborn swimmer!
1000 warm-up (typical 100 free, 25 back/25 breast over & over)
2 x 300 P no paddles
500 kick no board, with zoomers
12 x 200 as follows:
3 x 200 @ 3:00
3 x 200 P no paddles @ 2:45
3 x 200 P w/paddles @ 2:40
3 x 200 breast
500 cool down, various
Total: 5100 SCY
Shoulder is killing me this morning, had to take some Gabapentin & may even need to find an old Percocet in the back of my drawer somewhere
1000 warmup, various
5 x 200 P @ 3:00 (was going about 2:30-40 -- just taking my time, cuz the water was so darn hot! 86F)
10 x 100; 6 @ 1:40; 4 @ 1:30, wore zoomers on last 4
Did some USRPT on Saturday - it was sorta fun! Definitely something to do when swimming solo & you have to find a way to push yourself.
Came up with a couple of new mind games for myself today - trying to push through the pain of my "frozen" shoulder and the horribly hot water. Amazing how hot water is just fine, if all you want to do is float around & talk. But try going anywhere fast, and in 25-50yds you just want to roll over & let the steam escape. Had an ex-Olympian in the lane next to me this morning, and I asked him what he did to motivate himself in hot water, and he just laughed and asked me if I had noticed how slow he was going. Nice to know the hot water affects us all equally. And he's only 30. And slim. And HOT, lol. Eye Candy at 5:30am - nice way to start the day, hahaha!
Finally felt good to be in the water again, after a 3 week dry spell. My shoulder is still achy, but if I minimize the use of paddles, I can go longer w/out it aching (after the initial 600 of getting it warmed up). Swam mostly solo today, Bill beside me on one side, Dan on the other, each doing their own thing. I was fastest tho, lol!
600 - 100 free, 25 back/25 breast repeat
2 x 300 pull, first one w/out paddles
5 x 100 w/pullbuoy @ 1:25 holding ~ 1:20
5 x 100 swim @ 1:25 holding ~ 1:18ish
5 x 100 pull @ 1:20 holding ~ 1:15's
5 x 100 steady state (w/paddles & fins) @ 1:20, holding ~ 1:10's
3 x 300 breast/free (50 Br, 50 Fr, 100 Br, 50 Fr, 50 Br)
I've been having a lot of trouble motivating myself to actually work the workouts lately. Haven't been able to pin down exactly the cause, but today, after a nice workout, where I was able to push myself to go harder (than usual), I've decided the problem stems from basically one factor: 1) I am forced to swim at Meyers w/out ATAC because of repairs to Trousdale, thus notoriously warmer pool temps, and since ATAC has moved to a different pool at an even earlier time, this means I don't have anyone my speed to push me - my friend Jenna is waaaay too fast, and Bill waaaay too slow, but today I had Dan right beside me, and he is "just right". Plus, throw in the fact that I'm staying up too late watching the Olympics, and you could say I'm burning the candle at both ends. Ah Ha. Problem solved. Well, it will be, as soon as they let us back in to Trousdale.

Decided to scratch the Clearwater meet.
Just not feeling in the mood for racing, I guess. Usually I am waaay excited about a meet. This time, I'm sorta like, blah.
No, I'm not overtrained. Just the winter blahs. Right rotator-cuff tendinitis actually improving. I think it's the weather.
Frankly I'm more excited about my new phone!
3 x 200 pull
20 x 100 @ 1:30
600 various cool down
Not feeling this morning
Lovely weather today, warmish air, coolish water. Couldn't ask for more. Feeling pretty good throughout the workout - was pooped after the 400 breast/free, but I did recover to have a very nice 600 steady state after. Feeling positive about swimming (which is nice, because I'm not feeling so positive about other things right now -- please can I have a new job?).
2 x 300 pull
100-200-300-400-300-200-100 -- 100 & 300 free pull; 200 & 400 breast/free by 50's
4 x 4-cycle speed play
600 steady state w/fins & paddles - neg split each 200 faster than the last
4 x 150 breast/free/breast
Total: 5000 LCM
Solo around noon. One of 3 people in a 50m pool. Was hoping to wait until the sun came out, so I could work on my freckles, but the sun stayed behind the clouds until about 4:30, and I didn't have time to wait for that. Amazing how horribly unmotivated I become when I swim solo. If I even had just one other person who sorta resembled a swimmer, I could pretend to race, but noodlers and sunbathers just don't bring out the animal in me. Meant to go much farther, but gave myself the excuse of being sorta achy from weights and biking this morning.
1000 w/up done as 100 free/25 back/25 breast (repeat)
6 x 200 pull @ 2:45
6 x 100 swim/kick @ 1:45
Four times thru the following: (working on walls/turns)
25 4-cycle speed play
300 breast/free cool down
Supposedly a snow day, so no work. Hahaha, light rain, hardly even any hail, and tiny little gentle bits of it at that. Slept in for fear of driving on black ice & swam @ lunch - mostly solo, for 4500 SCY in 85 degree water. This will be the norm until March, as my usual pool is closing to replace the liner (finally!!). Only I'll be swimming in the bath tub @ my usual 5:30am.
1000 warm-up done as 100 free/25 back/25 breast over & over
5 x 200 pull
9 x 100, 3 @ :30, 3 @ :24, 3 @ :20 with 50 easy after each group of 3
10 x 50 @:50
Gotta figure out the best way to take off 10 lbs w/out feeling weak in the pool. Calorie restriction is hard not just on my brain (I feel so deprived!! And why do my cravings only come out when I decide to diet?!) but also hard on my body as I don't have the energy to workout as hard as I would like. Of course the option could be to say the heck with it, just shut up and eat my lettuce, and get over it, in 2-3 weeks maybe it would be all over?! But I always seem to have a meet around the corner. Anybody have any great ideas out there?
Oh, and BTW, after reading some goofy forum postings dating back near three years on the pros and cons of lifting/drylands, and whether to lift before or after swimming, let it be known I am in The Fortress & Chowmi camp, definitely before - and then an easy 2000 or so to loosen up. And studies have shown the aging athlete benefits from weight training, no matter what the sport, because we lose muscle mass. So there, all you nay sayers!
Studies have also shown that women don't drop as much time during tapers as men. No fair!

No ATAC practice cuz they had a three-day meet til late last night & Coach was letting them sleep in for a change. But my buddies were there. Amazing how much less I get in in 90 min when there isn't a coach to make me stop talking, lol. Just found out recently that our LCM pool is going to close for 3 weeks for liner replacement, and we will have to swim under the bubble. At least we have a pool, but then when we get back to LCM, I won't be used to it, AGAIN. I'm just now, after 8 weeks, finally to the point where I can do a long workout and not feel like chopped liver by the end of warm up!
2 x 300 pull
6 x 150 @ 2:30; alt free & free/breast/free
6 x 150 @ 3:00; kick/free/kick
6 x 150 @ 2:30 pull
Total 4200 LCM
10 x 50 pull @ :45
10 x 50 kick @ 1:00
16 x 50 @ :45
5 x 50 kick @ :45
7 x 100, alt IM & Free @ 1:15 & 1:30 (w/zoomers)

5 x 50 kick @ :45
Same guy here at pool again today. Apparently their pool is closed unless its over 40F. Our usual pool does the same, only at 30F. Today it was projected to be 28F, so we had to move to Meyers, as we did on Wed. Hate swimming under the bubble, the air is so thick, the water was 86F. For real. Anyway, Chuck, or whatever his name is, sure gets me going faster than I would on my own!! I had done 2900 before he even got there, too, so I was on the tired end of the spectrum.
Entered the meet in Clearwater. Gotta find a hotel now. Really was vacillating between it and Auburn, Auburn has a better order of events for me, but I traditionally bomb at that pool. Decided to venture out & try and new venue. Hope it makes a difference! Day one all three events are back to back. Day two, my 200 Br is immediately following the 500, and the next event is just 2 after that. I wish me luck.
8 x 100 @ 1:20
12 x 50 kick @ 1:00
12 x 50 swim @ :45
4 x 100 @ 1:15 (with zoomers)
3 x 100, one @ 1:10, 2 @ 1:15 (with zoomers)
2 x 100 @ 1:10 (with zoomers)
100 easy x 2
Can NOT believe I made those intervals. Some guy from another pool came & I had the choice of swimming the 100's on the 1:30 with a couple of friends next lane over, or doing them on the 1:15 w/him. Hmmm. Well, put on my zoomers, and not only did I make the interval, I made it well. With rest, and all that. I think I'll enter that meet now.
Feeling "perky" this morning. New Goal for the Year: Maximize my effort for the ENTIRE main set. Was able to do this today (5x300)
12 x 50 @ 1:00; 3 free, 3 stroke
5 x 300 @ 4:30 pull, first two w/out paddles
5 x 200, odds free, evens back/free
10 x 50 @ 1:00
Total: 5000 LCM
