Just keeping it real . . . .
Thursday I swam at lunch with the "lunch bunch" at Trousdale - arm still not quite where I want it to be, but it was a beautiful day outside.
24 x 50, 6 ea of S, K, Stroke/free, F on :50 & 1:00
3 x 150 on 1:30 SKS by 50
3 x 150 IM twitch on 2:20
3 x 100 on 2:00 (they were doing 150's pull)
200 breast/free by 50's
This morning I swam at 5:30 sort of by myself. I had a lot of trouble convincing myself to get out of bed - after a month of not swimming hardly at all, it seemed sort of silly to get up at the crack of dawn, like I was some sort of addict. Well, I used to be, and hope to be addicted again in 2-3 weeks, but right now, I like sleeping in!
500 warmup, mostly back/free by 50's
400 pull no paddles
400 pull no paddles
5 x 100, alt swim & kick on leisurely interval of about 2:00 for the swim, and I have no idea on the two kicks.
And about 800 mixed stuff in there, determined to get in 2800 LCM
My left arm is still quite weak, and this is not surprising, as it is still quite tender. It is not healing nearly as quickly as the right arm did, which surprises me, since the right wrist actually got a bit of an infection in it before the end of the first week! Ah well, and nerves heal so much more slowly than muscles do. However, I do feel like I should be able to really start pushing myself in about a week or so, and intend to go to the pool, even if it is for slow lazy swims, as many days next week as I can. I'm actually off on Tues Wed & Thurs - so will swim at lunch some & in the AM on Mon & Fri. I've a got a lot of distance to catchu pt on in the GTD>
First day back after my last surgeries - left arm felt really weird - couldn't pull with it properly, but it felt good to get back in there. It's a good idea to do back/free for warm up - really helps the shoulders get ready to swim - and helped me feel a lot better. Only did about 1600
24 x 50; 6 swim, 6 kick, 6 back/free, 6 breast/free
3 x 100 IM
3 x 100 kick/free
Total: 1600 SCY
Left arm done & still numb as can be! So glad this is over. Swam 4 times this week. Wed (am) was GREAT! but I guess I overdid it, the right arm was really tired after Thurs (lunch time) - almost didn't go to the pool this morning, super boy home with N/V/D & thought maybe I should rest the arm, but I gave it a go anyway, had some very uncomfortable twinges in the elbow, and went very easy & just finished the warm up. Reported to hospital at 9:30, home by 5pm. Won't be able to get back to the pool for about a week & a half this time due to various work & family things.
Superboy got his mission call yesterday! - he'll be serving in the Belgium/Netherlands Mission. He's super excited & we are very happy for him. Doesn't leave until August though, so we've still got the summer together before he's gone for 2 years.
My first real day swimming after surgery on the right arm - I was please that the arm actually worked properly (not so on Friday last!) - only had a wee bit of a twinge when doing breast stroke turns, but it resolved after 2 walls. Swam at lunch with the group at Trousdale:
16 x 50 on :50 (4 swim, 4 stroke, 4 swim, 4 kick)
4 x 150 IM twitch
5 x 100 kick on 1:45
6 x 75 P (no paddles for next 6 weeks!) on 1:00
Learned that I won't be using my paddles for the next 5-6 weeks - that caused a bit of an unwelcome twinge in the surgical arrm, and I got out after doing only a 50 w/paddles. (No sense in over-doing it & reinjuring the poor arm) But other than that, it was delightful to be back in the water!
Yes Doctor, I understand, no swimming until at least 2 weeks after surgery. Preferably 4 weeks. Humph. Got in 1100 today - my right arm is not working quite the way it was last Friday! I think I'd better try to wrap my brain around a 4 week recovery period for each arm, instead of 2 weeks. Who knows when I'll be back up to speed again? (Mostly I'm just swimming to try & keep the darn GTD genie from hollering at me!)
Surgery on Right Arm today. Didn"t have to report to the hospital until 8:30am, so got in one last workout!!
400 P, speedplay by 25's
3 x 300 stroke/free w/15 sec rest between each
9 x 100 free on 1:30
4 x 4 cycle speed play on :30
4 x 200 P
Jen came today & swam the last 1200 w/me - swam w/Danielle & Muriel (ATAC) for first 3000 - nice to have some kids get in my lane for a change.
LOVE the looks I got on peoples faces at the hospital when I told them that I went to practice before my surgeries today. Priceless!
On the other hand (ha, pun!) my hand & elbow are killing me. Will be taking advantage of the Percocets prescribed.
This meet was held at an awesome facility held at the North Shore Pool in St.Petersburg, FL. It's right on the Tampa Bay and absolutely gorgeous! I tapered for this meet - sort of a "drop" taper, and I wore my very first tech suit - a Finis that I bought at the Auburn Nationals last summer. Hopefully the drops I made are not totally due to the suit! The seed times I post are from the meet I was in in Feb, and I was NOT sand bagging. The times I did at the Feb meet were (unfortunately) my actual "best" times since I started back last March. Obviously, I have new best times now!
100 IM (1:21.05) 1:18.34
100 breast (1:33.03) 1:27.11
200 free (2:24.53) 2:19.58
200 breast (3:14.19) 3:06.61
100 free (1:07.87) 1:05.1
50 fly (36.80) 34.66
500 free (6:14.70) 5:59.84
Won first in all except the 100 free & 50 fly (surprise) got 2nd & 3rd respectably.
Hoping that my 500 free time puts me closer to being in the Top Ten. We'll see!
Was very happy with that 500 free. Personally I think I would have done better on the 500 free if it was first thing on Sunday instead of the very last event of the day! I also would have done much better on my 200 breast if it was on Saturday, and on my 100 free if I had had more than 22 minutes rest after the 200 breast. Too bad I don't have a say so in the order of events!!
Probably did too much this morning - it was long course, no ATAC practice due to Spring Break.
300 pull no paddles w/snorkle
300 pull w/paddles & snorkle
100 pull w/paddles (caught my last 2 100's time - and amazingly I was 5 secs faster w/out the snorkle - have suspected as much)
400 kick, every other 100 w/out the board
4 x 50 mod on 1:00
4 x 200P on 3:15 - last two were broken, one at the 100, last one at the 50 for about 5 secs - Did these with Bill M - who is a complete lazy butt until the very last 200 of the entire workout - go figure. Beat him anyway.
Feeling pretty good in the water - trying to make sure I don't over do it & actually get some rest, but still maintain enough conditioning to have a decent 500 free on Sunday. Really looking forward to going out of town. Superboy & his dad (my hubbie) are both coming to watch -- woo hoo! Gotta try on my new Finis fast suit - haven't put it on yet & I've had it since Auburn Nat's! Sure hope I can get on the stupid thing.
Felt much better this morning - possibly because the water was much cooler as well. Taking it easy is HARD. Did my usual warm-up, and then a little bit of harder stuff.
600 - 100 free, 25 back/25 breast repeat x 4
3 x 200 pull
300 kick w/zoomers
10 x 50; 5 on :50, 5 pull no paddles on :45
4 x 150 breast/free/breast
3 x 100 pull on 1:25 (held around 1:15)
50 pull no paddles easy
3 x 100 pull on 1:20 (held around 1:12/13)
50 pull no paddles easy
100 cool down
Total: 3400 SCY
Of course, day one of my taper, I feel like C***
Water was 84 degrees - amazing - could they possibly turn off the heater? It's 87 degrees outside!
24 x 50 on :50 & 1:00 (6 ea SKPS)
8 x 100 on 1:45 alt 50k/50s w/100 IM
5 x 100 P, start at 1:30 drop interval by 5 sec each 100
200 cool down
Total: 3000 SCY
My whole body hurts! Been lucky to swim outside at lunch for the last three days. Got crazy, and did an Alice in Wonderland theme cake for church last night - spent all of Wed & Thurs working on it - sitting hunched over a table for hours on end is harder than it looks! Got a little bit of sun today too!
12 x 50, 2 swim, 1 kick on 1:15/1:30
8 x 125, first 4 50 k, 75 swim; second 4 IM, rotating the 50 stroke IM order on 2:30 & 2:05
4 x 175 P on 2:30
500 P no paddles
5 x 100 P w/paddles on 1:20
Total: 4300 SCY
Tried to pin my cake pics here - looks like they're attachments
Love Monday Mornings! (not)
Elbows on fire since Saturday - funny how they don't really interfere w/my swmming so much, just my sleep.
300 kick w/zoomers
3 x 200 on 3:15
8 x 100 stroke/free and/or IM on 1:45
500 pull no paddles
4 x 50 w/paddles & zoomers on 1:00 (held :34/35)
So it's been a month since the Auburn meet, and I have 2 weeks until the St.Pete meet. Body is tired and ready to rest. Went to Trousdale today for a quick swim with the guys - was the only girl, is what I mean, among 4 very fast men. They tolerate me, as long as I don't swim in their lane, lol.
9 x 100 on 1:30;3 free, 3 IM, 3 50 k/50s (IM's were descend)
100 all out, followed by 100 easy on 4:00 (total of 4) - Free, IM, IM, Breast -I'm not going to embarrass myself by posting my times, suffice it to say that I was not as fast as I would have liked, even w/toys.
500; 75 free/25 breast
3 x 100 P on 1:20 (90%)
2 x 50 P on :45 P (90%)
Breast felt off today - Fly felt fabulous. Go figure. Arms (elbows) super achy today, but we did what we could. Goal sets are not one of my favorites, since I truly hate sprinting - I much prefer endurance events, since I am a tortoise, and not a hare. But it was probably good for me, lol!
Updated March 21st, 2012 at 01:50 PM by Celestial
Skipped yesterday - Jen texted at 4:30am to let me know that she wouldn't be coming & I just thought - fine, I'm tired of getting up at 5am anyway!
600 pull, speed play by 50's
300 kick w/zoomers
8x 100 breast/free on 1:45
50 easy (down 1/2 way & back)
12 x 25 on :30 drill/sprint (stop in the middle of the pool, check the clock, bounce off bottom to start the sprint)
500 pull no paddles
5 x 100 pull w/paddles on 1:30
2 x 50 w/zoomers on :45
**I had originally planned on doing doubles twice this week, but I am throwing a bridal shower tomorrow & I was really nervous that I wouldn't get everything done, so I skipped at lunch time - which really sucks cuz it was beautiful outside today. Besides, my arms are dead from kneading a double batch of fondant & swimming probably would have helped work that out, but oh well. Perhaps I'll go on Sunday & get in a quality workout with Jason & Frank. Think I'm the only one entered in the St.Pete meet from Tallahassee
Whooo - still tired from yesterday, I guess! Plus, I stayed up late watching the election returns - go Romney!
Got there late (I stepped on my kitty's paw just as I was leaving & she ran off - I had to chase her down under the trees in the front yard & apologize!) & only got in the first 100 of the 500 back/free so, did back/breast free during the next 500 "pull"
10 x 50 kick on 1:00 w/zoomers
50 easy (1/2 way down & then back)
10 x 50 on :50 3 @ 70%, 3 @ 80% 4 @ 90% -- getting faster - my last 4 were all 1-2 sec faster than I've been going -
2 x 300 breast/free by 50's
4 x 200 pull on 3:00 (descend 1-3, hold 4 in theory - in actuality, descended 1-3 & relaxed on #4 - was just too tired!! - but I did very well on #3)
It's nice to see myself improving on the sprint type stuff - even if I was rather tired on the last 200. Wish I knew my time, but Terry had moved the digital clock inside & I have no idea where I came in. Noticed today a technical issue with my hands underwater that I am working on fixing. I have a tendency to pull through the water & allow my hand to rotate so that instead of pushing with my palm, I am slicing through the water with the lateral aspect of my hand - this may be key to improving my speed if I can correct this consistently. I don't know how I got in this bad habit, but fortuntately I know a few drills that I can do to help correct it, and now that I am aware of it, I will be focusing on it more - just like I am focusing on not breathing as soon as I exit my turn, but instead taking least 2 underwater dolphins off each wall & one armstroke. My breath control stinks - I noticed this during my 200 breast at the Auburn meet - boy those underwater pull outs got worse & worse - especially around the 125 - so I've been making myself do underwater pull outs with an extra kick off the wall, and when going from free to breast (I usually forgo the underwater pull out on those) I also force myself to do a pull out. Maybe I won't be so pathetic at the St.Pete meet this way! Looking forward to it - my last meet before surgery!
Air was cold, water was hot - what a combo! Annie came to keep me company this AM:
I had done about 1400 by the time she got there
600 (100 free 25 back/25 breast x 4)
200 pull no paddles
300 pull w/paddles
8 x 50 on :50
10 x 50 on 1:00 odds fast, evens recovery
8 x 25 on :30; fast/easy, easy/fast, build, sprint x 2
8 x 150 on 2:15 pull - I went hard on all of these except #5 & #6, which were moderate - held about 1:50ish on all but #5, which was a 1:55 (good effort)
8 x 50 kick on :55
50 EZ on :55
50 sprint on 1:00
50 EZ on 1:00
75 sprint on 1:00
Total: 4300 SCY
This workout kicked my butt - the 150's I truly was pushing myself, and on the sprint 50's I was too - with Annie touching me out 90% of the time - great fun! Hopefully also training myself to go FAST.
I was planning on going 5000 today, but ran out of time, since I got there a bit late. There should have been a 100 fast after the last 75, plust a 125 recovery, followed by 4 x 50 @ 75% at the very end
Feeling really tight today plus, little to no energy thanks to my carb depletion weekend. I lost a total of 3lbs, and have not really felt deprived of food, but definitely could feel it sap my energy. Experimenting with my diet so that I won't gain a ton of weight after my surgery(s) at the end of the month. Too cold to swim this morning, plus I didn't have to work, so why get out of bet at 4:50am?!! Swam at Trousdale with the guys:
12 x 75 on 1:15 (50 swim, 25 other)
12 x 50 kick on 1:00 (4 breast, 2 back/fly, repeat)
6 x 100 IM on 1:40, rotating through strokes for starting length
4 x 100 pull on 1:20
3 x 300 pull on 4:15
Had my husband lawnmower my back but my c-spine still feels tight. Energy level a bit better since I had lunch.
Did doubles twice this week, Mon & Fri - trying to get a bit stronger before my "final" meet of the season at the end of the month. Monday was AWESOME at lunch time - swam 6 x 150's on 2:15, going SKS by 50's, racing Jen w/my zoomers & did a 90% effort for 1-4 & 6 - ahead of her the whole time, feeling really good. Slept in on Tuesday, AM on Wed, tried to do AM on Thursday, but my mind just wasn't in it, because I was literally the only person in the pool. This morning Jen & Annie were there & it was nice to have some company.
10 x 50 on :50 free
10 x 50 kick on 1:10
4 x 100 pull on 1:30
6 x 100 on 1:30
6 x 50 stroke on 1:05
Total: 3200 LCM
At Lunch I was the only girl there & somehow couldn't get my head into it again, just like yesterday morning. Cris called 12 x 100 dropping 5sec each group of three, with the last ones on the 1:05. Ha ha. I did something else (obviously) as I cannot make that kind of interval, even SCY.
20 x 50 SKPS on :50 & 1:00
6 x 100 50 kick/50 swim on 1:45
6 x 100,pull, 3 on 1:25, 3 on 1:20
4 x 50 sprint w/fins on 1:15
Total: 2500 SCY
Gonna do doubles again on Mon & Fri next week then start to pull back on yardage the next week, taper the week after that. Got a so so commitment from Jen & Annie for Tues & Thurs AM swimming companionship. We'll see. I need to have some help getting my pace down where I want it, much closer to 1:10's than 1:15's.
Went to Orlando to watch Sr.Champs for our area. It was awesome! We had Peter Vanderkay, Ryan Lochte, Sebastian Rousseau, Connor Dwyer, both the Fraser brothers, Malcolm Hosford, Benedict Hesen, Roman Sludnov & that is all I can remember of the Olympians - we also had Rebecca Mann - who is a REALLY fast 14 year old from Chicago, training in Clearwater - she blew the doors off everyone in the 800 m free w/ a 8:37 - 2 sec slower than her best, but still about 17 sec faster than OTC. She was totally amazing. Superboy swam very well too, although he did get beat by Benedict & Roman & Malcolm on the 100 breast, lol. An Olympian he is not, although he did well enough & turned in some very fast times - made finals on both the breasts and 400 IM & best times on all three.
Obviously I haven't swum in a few days (I never am in the mood at these things, just exhausted from sitting on the stupid bleachers all morning & the night before) so I did doubles today (another nice day off) to work off the 2 Krispy Kreme donuts I ate on Saturday at the Millennia Mall. THAT place is freakin awesome & I sure wish I had the money to actually spend there!! Anyways, todays workouts:
6 x 100 pull on 1:30 Very stiff neck this am, had trouble going much fast than a 1:24 on these.
16 x 50 @ 1:00, descend in groups of 4 (last 4 breast on 1:05)
12 x 75 on 1:15, 50 free, 50 other
150 IM twitch
50 kick (breast)
25 breast kick
25 breast kick
6 x 150; 50 free 50 kick 50 free - I really punched this - on 2:20 - and was pleased with my times
Grrrand Total: 6400
500 pull, locomotive
300 kick (w/zoomers)
12 x 50 on :50, 70-80-90% by 4's
9 x 100 free on 1:30, descend 1-3, progressive - I did NOT do as well as I would have liked on this set - was behind Jennifer & Annie (Annie leading) & had to put on my pulling equipment for the last 4!
Lots of talking - big mistake - arms got soooo tight!
4 x 50, blast the first 20m, coast the last 30 on 15 sec rest
Kids are tapering for Senior Champs - which is perfect for me, because this means I actually am getting a more quality workout - and not just an extended warm-up for my practice time. Learning how to "blast" is a blast! The first one, I pushed off and started spinning my arms (rather ineffectually!) it was crazy ridiculous! Next one I sort of did a build for the first 2-3 strokes & blasted the rest - much more effectual for me. How do those crazy sprinters do it? Tomorrow I am going to do more of those & then some build to sprint sets. Also some butterly. I am planning to do David Salo's 8 x 100 on 4:30 evaluation set on Monday - that should be interesting!! And FUN! (Who knew sprinting could be such a blast? too bad I'm not any good at it!!)
