Oh my goodness I felt trashed this morning. On Saturday I had the misfortune of blowing out my Baker's cyst again - I couldn't walk or anything, so much pain. So Sunday was spent mainly in bed, lying in the lazy boy, etc. This resulted in lower back pain, so I could hardly do my flip turns this morning. Got out rather early.

Didn't realize I hadn't been on here in so long. Swam like crap this morning. Felt like I was swimming in sludge. It's amazing how much can change in a week. Last Wed, the water temp was 78, and I swam really well. Monday I swam well also. Today the air temp was back down to 38 again, water temp back up to 81, and I felt like a salmon going upstream. Got the distance in, but the quality just wasn't there.

What happened to March? Geez, Spring is actually upon us, and it seems like Valentine's Day was just last week! Warmer air again this morning, thank goodness - the 38 degree temp on Wed morning was a nasty shock to the system. ATAC still off - so we've had the entire 50M pool to ourselves for 2 weeks now. They come back on Monday, and I'm looking forward/dreading that! Swam with Jenna & Gary today - Sela & Marcia slept in, I guess. Did butterfly for the first time since, basically October - with zoomers - and only for a 25, but I did do it, and I felt good, no shoulder pain at all. (Yea!)

Trying to find a way to challenge myself w/out going to meets is really hard. I don't think there is a single meet that coincides with my free weekends until October. Been thinking about giving myself a challenge & actually doing the dumb "goal sets" with the kids on some of the Saturday practices this summer. I hate competing against Olympians, seriously. Even tho I won't be in their heat, they will see me come in at my pathetically slow time, and even tho they probably aren't actually watching me, I still feel like they are, and judging. (And they probably couldn't care less, lol!!)

Had my 2nd accupuncture about 5 days ago, which I didn't really enjoy this time, because he gave me a "massage" which hurt like, well, it hurt a lot. I felt bruised until about yesterday, but swimming wise, on Monday I was fine, Tuesday was fine, today was pretty dang good, actually. So yes, I would recommend accupuncture, but I think I'm done for now. It's too bad I don't have a meet this weekend, darn it.

So I had my very first accupuncture tx today, and I was totally amazed -- you don't feel the needles going in at ALL. We shall see if this helps the old shoulder, and other things. He told me a lot of stuff that I'm not sure I buy into, but hey, if it helps, why not?

I think Terry was easy on them/us because the kids had Sr.Champs this past weekend, and this was essentially their first day back in long course in 3-1/2 weeks. PLUS, it was raining. I imagine next week he'll step it up a bit.
I am soooo looking forward to the time change and the temperature change. I truly pity those who live up north. My son, in very northern Tennessee (1 mi south of Kentucky) had 5 inches of ICE beneath 10 inches of snow on Monday. What a nightmare. And his apartment complex didn't do anything to help dig the parking lot out, so he got together a posse and spent 7 hours digging/shoveling and picking at ice on Monday. Down here in Tallahassee, that same day, it was 71 and sunny.
***AND, I made an appt with an accupuncturist! That should be interesting! Hoping to "unfreeze" my shoulder sooner than Mother Nature was planning.
Ahhh! Back to my old pool! And its LCM! Yipes! But it wasn't too bad, we were only out of the pool for 3 weeks, so hopefully a week of torture, and then I'll be used to it again.

**Rediscovered something this morning. When I emphasize my pull properly, the T drops and the feet rise, making my stroke more efficient, thus moving me faster with no increase in effort. This was a lovely "ah ha" moment this morning & I am so excited to get back after it - but tomorrow I have an early dentist appt, and will have to miss swimming entirely! Argh.

Mother Nature is playing tricks on us again. Nearly a full week of temps in the 70's, and she pulls a fast one last night and drops it to 28 degrees. Of course pool management decided that meant the pool had to be warmer, so we got to have 85 degree water. Fortunately the people from Premier were not allowed in their pool (if it's colder than 40 they won't open the pool) so I had this fast guy, Chuck, to spur me on [to greatness] hahaha. When I was doing 1:20's, he was doing them on the 1:15 and holding a 1:10. I comfort myself with the facts: a) he is a MAN, and b) he is only 45. Plus, I had done 2200 before he even got in, so I was more tired, right? (Why don't I feel better?)When I did my 200 easy at the end, he did one all out & did a :58 from a push. Most impressive.

Shoulder was GREAT in the water, got in 5100 SCY. Then once I stopped moving, got showered and dressed, I noticed the entire capsule is just throbbing again. Geez. Well I dealt with 2-1/2 years of elbow pain I guess I can deal with 18 months of frozen shoulder pain. At least I know what it is, and I know that the only thing that helps is time. I may not be a very fast swimmer, but I am a stubborn swimmer!

Did some USRPT on Saturday - it was sorta fun! Definitely something to do when swimming solo & you have to find a way to push yourself.
Came up with a couple of new mind games for myself today - trying to push through the pain of my "frozen" shoulder and the horribly hot water. Amazing how hot water is just fine, if all you want to do is float around & talk. But try going anywhere fast, and in 25-50yds you just want to roll over & let the steam escape. Had an ex-Olympian in the lane next to me this morning, and I asked him what he did to motivate himself in hot water, and he just laughed and asked me if I had noticed how slow he was going. Nice to know the hot water affects us all equally. And he's only 30. And slim. And HOT, lol. Eye Candy at 5:30am - nice way to start the day, hahaha!
Finally felt good to be in the water again, after a 3 week dry spell. My shoulder is still achy, but if I minimize the use of paddles, I can go longer w/out it aching (after the initial 600 of getting it warmed up). Swam mostly solo today, Bill beside me on one side, Dan on the other, each doing their own thing. I was fastest tho, lol!

I've been having a lot of trouble motivating myself to actually work the workouts lately. Haven't been able to pin down exactly the cause, but today, after a nice workout, where I was able to push myself to go harder (than usual), I've decided the problem stems from basically one factor: 1) I am forced to swim at Meyers w/out ATAC because of repairs to Trousdale, thus notoriously warmer pool temps, and since ATAC has moved to a different pool at an even earlier time, this means I don't have anyone my speed to push me - my friend Jenna is waaaay too fast, and Bill waaaay too slow, but today I had Dan right beside me, and he is "just right". Plus, throw in the fact that I'm staying up too late watching the Olympics, and you could say I'm burning the candle at both ends. Ah Ha. Problem solved. Well, it will be, as soon as they let us back in to Trousdale.

If I even had just one other person who sorta resembled a swimmer, I could pretend to race, but noodlers and sunbathers just don't bring out the animal in me. Gotta figure out the best way to take off 10 lbs w/out feeling weak in the pool. Calorie restriction is hard not just on my brain (I feel so deprived!! And why do my cravings only come out when I decide to diet?!) but also hard on my body as I don't have the energy to workout as hard as I would like. Of course the option could be to say the heck with it, just shut up and eat my lettuce, and get over it, in 2-3 weeks maybe it would be all over?! But I always seem to have a meet around the corner. Anybody have any great ideas out there?
Oh, and BTW, after reading some goofy forum postings dating back near three years on the pros and cons of lifting/drylands, and whether to lift before or after swimming, let it be known I am in The Fortress & Chowmi camp, definitely before - and then an easy 2000 or so to loosen up. And studies have shown the aging athlete benefits from weight training, no matter what the sport, because we lose muscle mass. So there, all you nay sayers!
Studies have also shown that women don't drop as much time during tapers as men. No fair!

No ATAC practice cuz they had a three-day meet til late last night & Coach was letting them sleep in for a change. But my buddies were there. Amazing how much less I get in in 90 min when there isn't a coach to make me stop talking, lol. Just found out recently that our LCM pool is going to close for 3 weeks for liner replacement, and we will have to swim under the bubble. At least we have a pool, but then when we get back to LCM, I won't be used to it, AGAIN. I'm just now, after 8 weeks, finally to the point where I can do a long workout and not feel like chopped liver by the end of warm up!
