  2. See-mee get another pool, but not-alotta workout

    by , October 18th, 2016 at 09:42 PM (Of Swimming Bondage)
    I had a late flight over to Burbank on Sunday night, landing there around 10pm. I wanted to get to sleep as early as possible and so stayed in Simi Valley, instead of trekking onwards to Camarillo. As I have had some frustrating experiences with the staff at the otherwise fine Rancho Simi Community Pool, I managed to drop into the Masters workout at the Simi Valley YMCA. After two harder and longer workouts, I had planned to go more moderate and about 2K, so was perfectly happy with the 2,100 yards I did there. I was even happier to squeeze in 2 miles on the treadmill and my 20 minute yoga session back at the hotel before I had to head over to my meetings for the day.

    Today starts a bizarre time for my wife and I: she's on a business trip both this week and the early part of next week. She's transforming her role and, while she won't start to travel like me, she will have some travel here and there. Hopefully, we'll be able to juggle this. While I'm really happy to be 'grounded' from travel so I can be home for #3 daughter, it's kind of weird to be home without my wife!

    I was slammed all day and kind of thought I was going to do a little more this evening in the pool, but I only managed 1,750 SCM before I called it quits. That's not the end of the world as today should have technically been a day off. Will try to swim longer tomorrow!

  3. Workout 10/18/16: evening

    by , October 18th, 2016 at 09:41 PM (Maple Syrup with a Side of Chlorine)
    Full house in the pool again, which is a good thing.

    200 swim/100 kick/200 pull
    4 x 25 build as group
    -----
    3 x 100 on :20sr pull
    4 x 25 kick as group
    1 x Noah's Ark
    1 x 100 perfect stroke (recovery)
    6 x 75 on :20sr (kick/swim/pull)
    100 loosen and out
    (Masters/Rec/2150 yds/50 min)
    -----
    Our six lane pool is set up with two lines in, so three big lanes. I split with Matt and Eric, Greg and Tim were in the middle, and Jim swam with Rebecca in the far lane. Another good mix of intensity with recovery and a great workout.

    I'm feeling sore and tired. I suspect that it is because I haven't had a full recovery week since the third week of August. My body always starts to protest if train too long without a meet to rest for. I've also had a little bit of Stewartitis the last few weeks -- waking up for awhile in the middle of the night. I usually just read an actual book. I'm a dinosaur -- haven't switched to reading books on my iPad.

  6. Week 211 - Tuesday

    by , October 18th, 2016 at 08:37 AM (After a long rest)
    I went to bed early last night but once again woke up early and was actually reading the online news paper at 2am. I don't know what's happening with my sleep. Looking back at last year it looks like I suffer in the fall. My allergies are not too bad and I don't have a lot of work stress like earlier in the year so I don't really have an explanation.

    Today was was one of my early early mornings for dryland and despite being tired I had a good day at the gym and pool.

    Dryland:
    5 mins of general stretching
    15 mins on stationary bike
    elbow PT exercises
    5x(5 X abs for :45 seconds, with :15 second transition) 1 minute between rounds.

    The pool was setup scy

    400 swim with snorkel
    6x50 catchup on :50
    20x50 at 1000 race Pace on :45
    12x50 kick on :50
    200 easy

    I plan on continuing to work on dropping the send off on my 1000 race pace set. Ideally I would be able to hold pace with next to no rest. Today I was able to hold :28/:29s on :45s and it was not too bad until the last 5. I think I should be able to drop to :40 for the send off before I taper for Boston. When I had to lay off swimming because of my elbow(I kicked on a board for about a month) I felt like I lost a lot of my aerobic capacity. I have good and bad days but generally I think I am finally back to where I was on these longer pace sets. Now I need to get my lower pace back which is proving harder. I am tossing up how much to rest for Boston. Last year I did a drop taper for the woodlands meet where I focused on back and then a longer taper for Boston where I focused on 400 and down free events. My event lineups this fall are basically the same however I don't feel in the same shape as last year and will likely swim through the woodlands and taper for Boston.

    Thursday afternoon I am having another PRP injection in my elbow and have been warned by the doctor to lay off the intensity in my workouts for a week or so(which I struggle with).

    I survived Homecoming on Saturday. But I was up so late for the afterparty at our house (Mr. Fort can't stay up) and we had brunch for all the girls in the party who slept over at our house on Sunday am (Mr. Fort running with another Homecoming dad), that I was beat the rest of the day. I still felt beat today. Fort Son is in town and I had to hit the grocery etc., so I only went to LA Fitness.

    I finally got around to entering the Sprint Classic:
    Swim Meet Events

    Event
    Number
    Sex Distance Stroke Time
    5 Women 50 SCY Fly 0:26.50
    13 Women 100 SCY IM 1:03.50
    19 Women 50 SCY Back 0:28.00
    23 Women 25 SCY Fly 0:12.00
    25 Women 25 SCY Back 0:12.96
    27 Women 25 SCY Breast 0:15.00
    29 Women 25 SCY Free 0:11.90

    I think my body is looking forward to a few days of rest. Not sure why, my flog suggests that I could have trained harder the last month ... I could really use a massage.

    (was supposed to be 3 rounds of 5 x 100, but I improvised)

    300 w/d

    TTL: 3500 yards

    this was my first swim since I had a few medical procedures done last week.
    It all seemed to happen so quickly; I went for a routine apt to the VA clinic 3 weeks ago. I had A-Fib (for about 2 years), my primary referred me to cardiology. Had an apt with that doc that Thursday. He recommended a procedure to make sure no clots, then if not, another to get rid of the A-Fib. had the procedures last week, and all successful so far.
    first they sedated me a bit (but I still remember most), and I gargled/drank something to numb my throat. then they put a tube down my throat to get a look at my heart from the backside (that is a TEE).
    I remember them pulling the tube out, asking me to lay flat on the bed (I was on a side), then the next thing I remember was the anesthesiologist saying she was leaving. they had put big pads on my chest and back. I was knocked out, then they charged the pads (similar to movies where they use paddles). I don't remember any of that, but when I first came to the oxygen tube had moved from my nose to mouth, and some change fell out of my shorts onto the bed. the nurse said I bounced a little (she said that everyone asks that question).
    and now the A-Fib is gone

    of course I'm scheduled for those lake swims here this coming weekend, but I don't think I'll be ready by then. it will probably take 2-3 weeks before I'm back to where I was, then hopefully I'll progress to even better. I'll contact the organizers; I might be able to do 1 of them (the medicine I'm on suggests avoiding sunlight too).

    I have a trip to Beijing in a few weeks and I'm hoping to get in a swim at the Water Cube. looks like the training pool is open for lap swimming (from what I've seen, the main pool was converted to a water park). hoping to be well enough to join an organized hike (about 5 miles) along the Great Wall (I walked the dog about 5 miles Sat-Sun and that seemed fine, but will want more to train for some hills).

  10. Week 211 - Monday

    by , October 17th, 2016 at 08:53 AM (After a long rest)
    On Saturday my daughter had a pentathlon meet in Plano. Our expectations were low because she had already swim a 2hr workout and was tired. To both our surprise she did best times on all 5 swims(200 IM, 100 fly, back, breast and free).

    I was really tired throughout the day yesterday and took a 3hr nap after coaching early. I woke up still tired but was worried I slept too long and i would have difficulty sleeping last night, which as it turned out proved to be a valid concern. I slept fine until 2am and then struggled to stay asleep and read a book for a few hours before getting up for morning practice.

    Pool was setup scy.

    Warm up
    400 free with snorkel
    6x50 catch-up on :50

    main sets
    6x100 kick on 1:45
    1000 swim on 11:30
    800 swim on 9:30
    600 swim on 7mins
    400 swim on 4:30
    200 swim on 2:30
    100 easy
    8x50 odds back drill/swim by 25, evens breast drill/swim by 25 on 1min

    warm down
    100 easy

    my goggles kept leaking today which did not make for much fun on the longer swims. I felt tired and flat throughout but kept pushing.

  11. 9 x 300 and the 4IM test set

    by , October 17th, 2016 at 12:10 AM (Of Swimming Bondage)
    I completely forgot to blog last Sunday's attempt (10-09) at the 400 IM test set, but you can look at today's results and see the exact same performance. But, before that, I did the endurance workout #3 from this past week's training thread - http://forums.usms.org/showthread.ph...tart-Oct-10th).

    Saturday the 15th

    Warmup (1,600 set)
    Go straight through on the intervals, making the 2nd effort of each distance faster than the first
    • 1 x 50: easy w/snorkel
    • 2 x 250: on 3:30, pull with buoy, paddles, snorkel
    • 2 x 200: on 3:50, IM kick
    • 2 x 150: on 2:40, fly-back-breast
    • 2 x 100: on 1:55, IM kick
    • 2 x 50: on 0:50, free swim
    • 1 x 50: easy w/snorkel

    Gobs of 300s (2,850 set / 4,500 total)

    The set is 3 rounds of 3 x 300 on 4:30
    • TARGET is the average result from the most recent 3 x 300 test set, which was roughly 3:30 for me
    • Try to swim precisely as follows
      • Round 1 - go TARGET + 0:20, TARGET + 0:10, TARGET + 0:05
        • My goal then was 3:50, 3:40, 3:35, but I was 3:54, 3:43, 3:38

      • Round 2 - go TARGET, TARGET + 0:20, TARGET + 0:05
        • My goal was 3:30, 3:50, 3:35, but I was 3:35, 3:50, 3:38

      • Round 3 - go TARGET, TARGET + 0:20, and then AFAP
        • My goal was 3:30, 3:50, faster than 3:30, but I was 3:34, 3:52, 3:34

    • Take an extra 2:00 rest after each round and do an easy 50 during that

    Did one extra 50 after it was all done just to get to 4,500 SCM

    Sunday the 16th - 400 IM test set

    Warmup sets (1,750 set)

    • 1 x 400: IM, kick-drill by 25
    • 4 x 100: on 1:30, free descend swim w/snorkel and paddles (1:18, 1:16, 1:14, 1:12)
    • 8 x 25: on 0:35, w/monofin going twice thru 2 breaths moderate, 0 breaths moderate, 1 breath moderate, 0 breaths AFAP
    • 4 x 50: on 1:05, dolphin-breast kick descend
    • 6 x 50: on 1:00, #1 and #6 cruise free, #2 to #5 IM order build
      • 0:36+, 0:36+, 0:43, 0:35

    • 6 x 25: on 0:30, going 5-6-7-8 AFAP strokes off the wall on the first 4, cruise #5 and AFAP on #6; w/Finis Agility Paddles
    • 1 x 100: easy

    400 IM Test Set (2,050 set / 3,800 total)

    • 8 x 50: on 1:00, 2 each stroke, build the odds and make sure the evens are at your target 400 IM race pace
      • In SCM, my dream is to approach the 4:39.8 I did in 2008 in a tech suit. That race was split 1:03.8, 1:11.5, 1:21.1, 1:03.4 so target 50 times would be 33.5 (2nd 50 of fly), 35+ (back), 40+ (breast) and 31+ (free)
      • My SCY splits to dream of would be 29+ fly, 31+ back, 36+ breast, 29.0 free
      • 09/17/13 - 35+, 35, 42, 33
      • 09/23/13 - 33, 35, 40+, 31+ (much better!)
      • 10/06/13 - 34, 35, 41, 32 (a little sluggish)
      • 10/27/13 - 33, 34+, 41, 31- (much better than expected)
      • 10/30/13 - 33, 34, 40+++/41---, 31-
      • 04/01/14 - 0:33, 0:35, 0:40+, 0:32
      • 04/14/14 - 0:33+, 0:35+, 0:41, 0:31+
      • 06/01/14 - 0:33+, 0:35, 0:42, 0:31
      • 06/27/14 - 0:34, 0:35, 0:42, 0:32
      • 07/27/14 - 0:35, 0:35, 0:42, 0:32
      • 05/21/16 - 0:36, 0:37, 0:42, 0:33+
      • 06/12/16 - 0:34, 0:36, 0:41, 0:33
      • 10/02/16 - 0:35, 0:35, 0:42, 0:31+
      • 10/09/16 - pretty much the same as 10/02
      • 10/16/16 - 0:35, 0:36, 0:43, 0:33

    • 4 x 100: on 1:50, do as 100 IMs, descend to your target race pace divided by 4, ideally starting on #1 no slower than 12 seconds above that
      • SCM target would be to descend from 1:22 to 1:10
      • SCY target would be to descend from 1:14+ to 1:02+
      • 09/17/13 - 1:23, 1:22, 1:19, 1:14
      • 09/23/13 - 1:21, 1:19, 1:15, 1:12+
      • 10/06/13 - 1:21, 1:17+, 1:14, 1:12-
      • 10/27/13 - 1:21, 1:18, 1:15, 1:11+
      • 10/30/13 - 1:21, 1:18, 1:14, 1:12
      • 04/01/14 - 1:21, 1:19, 1:14, 1:13
      • 04/14/14 - 1:20, 1:18, 1:13+, 1:11
      • 06/01/14 - 1:22, 1:20, 1:15+, 1:13
      • 06/27/14 - 1:20, 1:18, 1:14, 1:11+
      • 07/27/14 - 1:20, 1:16, 1:14, 1:11
      • 05/21/16 - 1:21+, 1:17, 1:15, 1:13
      • 06/12/16 - 1:21+, 1:18, 1:15, 1:12+
      • 10/02/16 - 1:23, 1:19, 1:16+, 1:15-
      • 10/09/16 - pretty much the same as 10/02
      • 10/16/16 - 1:26, 1:22, 1:18, 1:16

    • Masters' Two Minutes and an easy 50
    • 2 x 200: on 3:20, build each stroke on #1, try to make #2 at your target 400 IM race pace divided by two (e.g., 2:20 in SCM, 2:05+ in SCY)
      • 09/17/13 - 2:49, 2:38
      • 09/23/13 - 2:49, 2:33
      • 10/06/13 - 2:45, 2:33
      • 10/27/13 - 2:43, 2:32
      • 10/30/13 - 2:41, 2:30+
      • 04/01/14 - 2:47, 2:36
      • 04/14/14 - 2:48, 2:30
      • 06/01/14 - 2:43, 2:32

    • 4 x 50: active recovery, on 0:45, 0:50, 0:55, 2:30
    • 1 x 400: IM on 6:00, AFAP, from blocks

    Comments:

    • I've been thinking lately that my pool was at the perfect temperature. I had turned the chillers off after Labor Day weekend and had this idea that the water was around 78 degrees. I actually checked it today and it's 74, which still felt pretty nice. I'm not going to turn any sort of heat on until after next weekend's Open Water State Championships - https://azopenwater.com/state-championship/ - where I'm going to play 'sprinter' and do the 1500M. That should allow me to be well acclimated to the Lake Pleasant water temp.
    • Swimming highlight of the weekend was not my workouts, but taking our friends' son down to the Special Olympics and then watching him win his race. He's a great kid who has made great strides in his swimming over the last couple of years and his joy in both being there and in winning was incredibly infectious.

  12. Week 210 - Saturday

    by , October 16th, 2016 at 06:07 PM (After a long rest)
    i slept well but woke up feeling really physically tired. My week of travel seemed to hit. I was even slow getting up and ready and today was a real slog.

    One of my team mates sons swam with us this morning. He is a small 13 year old but he is very quick. I knew if I could convince him to swim next to me we would push each other. He took a lot of coaxing but finally gave in and mid way through the main set he went in the lane next to me and we started to race. I know I had fun and believe he enjoyed it too; although he made reference to it being unnatural for an old man to swim that fast

    Pool setup LCM
    Warm up
    400 free with snorkel on 6mins
    6x50 catchup on :55

    Main sets
    12x50 kick on :55
    16x100 on 2mins at 400 race pace

    Warm down
    400 easy

    I started out ok going 1:07/1:08 through the first 4 but started to slow on the next 4 going 1:09s. I felt really crappy until this point but then I started to race and gradually started dropping going 1:06/1:07 on the next 4 and then 1:06/1:05s for the next 3 and finished with a 1:04! I think I would have had a really bad day if it were not for my young padawan next to me on the last 8 of the 16x100s.

    Friday: Swim/SCY @ Pitt

    Warm up:

    500 various
    100 scull
    400 kick, no I did 8 x 25 shooters + 3 x 50 single arm fly
    10 x 25 kick w/fins @ :30 (did about 5 bursts)
    50 EZ

    Main set:

    This was the bear of a main set assigned. I modified somewhat and used fins. I'm a bit terrified of someone kicking my toe and fins really cushion the toe on the walls. I don't remember the intervals exactly, but Bill was chastising people for not taking enough rest on the EZ swims.

    3 rounds:
    1 x 100 fast (I did 75 IM, fly-back-breast fast @ 100 pace)
    1 x 100 EZ (did 125 EZ)
    1 x 75 fast (did IM, fly-back-breast)
    1 x 75 EZ
    1 x 50 fast @ around 95% (did fly-back)
    1 x 50 EZ
    1 x 25 fast (breast)
    1 x 125 EZ

    250 EZ

    Total:

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    At first I looked at that main set and thought there was no way I could do it, even with fins. I thought about doing the second round hypoxic. But I gave it a try. There was no way to go AFAP on everything. Holding the 75s at 100 pace was challenging enough. I was trying to hold :44s, the first one was a bit faster. Went 24-25 on the 50s and 11-12s on the 25 breasts. I was feeling pretty beat last night after that.
    Today is Homecoming for Lil Fort. The after party is at our house, so I need to get to the grocery and do a few things today.
    I got home around 9pm last night and went straight into being math dad and helping my kids with there math homework. I did not get to bed until late but was glad I got to spend time with the kids. I really am a lucky man with two great kids.
    8x25 from a dive on 1min - getting out and going back to the end with blocks
  17. 40s in the Poconos
    by , October 13th, 2016 at 10:00 PM (Of Swimming Bondage)
    We had our company's annual strategic planning meetings this week on Tuesday through Thursday. Last year, we did this about 45 minutes west of our office in Berkeley Heights, NJ, but that was close enough that many people who lived in the area didn't stay at the hotel. Our CEO wanted us all together and so he booked us into what turned out to be a nice resort up in Pennsylvania (Woodloch Pines), which is a solid two hour drive from Newark, so we were locked away and focused on the business as desired.
    Fortunately, in spite of a relative dearth of pools in this part of the world, I managed to keep my fitness up fairly well:
    • On Monday, I flew in Newark and headed out to Stroudsburg, strategically chosen as it offered the twin benefits of places to swim and cheap hotels for the night (since our meetings didn't start until Tuesday mid-morning). I was about 15 minutes late to the Masters workout held at East Stroudsburg University, but still got in a solid 2,500 yard workout in a solid and brightly colored & lit 6 lane, 25 yard pool. The group was small - maybe 12 people - but coached and exceedingly friendly. In my experience, even though I generally don't know people at most places I drop into at random and they don't know me, visiting a Masters workout is often like a Cheers experience - while everyone doesn't always know my name, key lyrics resonate with the experience:
      • Making your way in the world today takes everything you've got. Taking a break from all your worries, sure would help a lot ... and they're always glad you came. You wanna be where you can see, our troubles are all the same.
    • On Tuesday morning I discovered the Pocono Family YMCA had a 3 lane, 20 yard pool; was practically next door to the only Starbucks within miles and allowed non-YMCA members in for a $10 drop-in fee. I wanted to get in a run, so I did my requisite 2 miles on the treadmill and then got in my standard 1,500 yard warmup in the pool.
    • By Wednesday morning, I was up at the resort and they had another 20 yard pool, though this was one of the weirder ones I've swum in. On the positive side, it was a Myrtha pool, but it was primarily a leisure pool and had steps going into the pool at the shallow end, which made about 80% of the width of the pool impossible for swimming laps. However, they had two lane lines on the bottom, one on each side of the steps so you could swim straight, but no lane ropes. When I got there, there were 4 people trying to swim laps and one guy floating / water-shuffling (while floating on a life preserver-looking thing) precisely over one of the two lanes. I was probably a bit obnoxious in how close I swam to him, but I was quite irritated that he was barely moving mostly in place, but taking up one of the two actual swimming spaces. There was no pace clock, so I did my workout by perceived effort, but I still managed to get in a pretty decent effort on my ~3K Broken Mile workout. As fate would have it, by the last round of the main set, everyone vacated the pool (including the water-shuffler) and I could swim straight.
    • This morning, Thursday, having swum 8 days in a row and not looking forward to a sub-par swim experience, I just hit the gym and did another 2 mile run.
    I need to get the last pool updated, but a couple of decent (I think) photos are posted to http://www.1001pools.com/pool-pics. Feel free to view and, if you've got time and thoughts, add comments to my blog posts there - http://www.1001pools.com/freestyle. In addition to just using that site as an aggregation and documentation of my progress to my goal, I'm trying to educate myself on website analytics ... so, the more visitors and comments I get, the more analytics I can peruse and learn from
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    My toe was really throbbing after that workout and kept me up at night. This break seems more painful than the last one. I just hope it is better in two weeks. Off to the gym to try to find something to do that won't injure me or exacerbate injuries.

  20. Week 210 - Wednesday

    by , October 12th, 2016 at 09:02 PM (After a long rest)
    Work took me to Edmonton Canada yesterday. I had an uneventful but long flight from Dallas and arrived around 9pm last night. I had checked out pools and found the Kinsmen Sport Centre which from the photos looked awesome. When I got to the pool this morning I was blown away. Not only was there a competition 50m pool but a second training 50m pool, a deep diving well and a teaching pool.

    Kinsmen Sports Centre

    The competition pool and diving well were setup as 25m while the training g pool was LCM. With my preference to long course I choose the shallower than anticipated and slightly warmer than anticipated training pool(still pretty awesome). Tom had sent me a scy workout which I swam LCM but at 400 pace instead of 200 pace.

    Warm up
    400 free with snorkel
    6x50 catchup on 1min

    main sets
    10x50 kick on 1min
    16x50 free on :55 at 400 race pace
    200 easy
    3x3x200 on 3mins #1 free, #2 back, #3 IM

    warm down
    200 easy

    i was able to hold :33s on the race pace set and actually felt great. On the 200s instructions were to hold the same pace throughout so I went a little easier than usual on the free , a little harder on the stroke and much harder on the IM. I managed to hold 2:40-2:42s.

    Tonight i am heading to Calgary.
