  1. 2013 South Central Zone Long Course Meet Part 2

    I really liked the timing of this meet with my events on both Saturday and Sunday being done by noon. Yesterday after finishing up and doing my blog my mother, father, wife and kids hung out with our friends from Catoosa. We had a great Indian takeout last night and my dad and friend had some beers(I am still not drinking) while I had a Gatorade. Our kids played and watched movies while the adults watched the last two days of the Tour de France. It was great seeing another Englishman doing well on the tour. This completely took my mind off my swimming which I needed. I woke up this morning feeling good and I reset my expectations and focused on racing. Today's swims were

    50m free - I went about the same time I swam in Rockwall two weeks ago, 26.5 and had a good start, but my stroke tightened up in the last few strokes. I won my age group and was 3rd in the heat. Everyone went 27.00 or quicker.

    200m free - I actually felt strong on this but again no pickup. The time was 2.10.xx and I was 1st in my age group and second in the heat. A young guy under 25 pulled away half way down the last length and I just could not dig deep and stay with him unfortunately.

    The drive home was uneventful but long. It's nice to be home and I am looking forward to getting back into a routine next week.

    Did zilch on Fri & Sat -- too busy and stressed. I think the move has finally hit me; I've been pretty blue. My girls closed out their NVSL careers on Saturday with a bang. We've been doing summer league swim for 12 years; it will definitely be a loss. I did make it to SpringHill rec center for a farewell swim today. Nice sendoff -- an absolute mosh pit. People on deck waiting for lanes were testy.

    I entered Teen Fort and I in the Aug 3-4 LCM + SCM meet, But it says on the PV website that it might get cancelled if more people don't enter. So enter PV folk if you want to swim!

  3. 07.20.13 - Saturday workout

    Swam w/ Dave, Dave and Dave. Light showing at the Nat. I think a nearby sprint triathlon bled off most of the Saturday morning regulars. Probably a good thing since Brook had time to notice my left arm overreaches on backstroke. I don't think this is the total solution to my backstroke woes but every little bit helps.

    Noticed sometimes while kicking real hard my feet collide. Loud enough to hear it while swimming.
  5. Strait of Juan de Fuca: The 24 page pre-plan

    This is it, my final post before the swim. Meghan and Caitlin are in town, the weather remains sunny and calm, and all indications point to a go on 28 July 2013. But we wouldn’t be able to start without the pre-plan being approved.

    Last summer, I began typing up a “so you’re going to crew for me” type document to make early morning pre-swim discussions with an unfamiliar captain and crew a little easier. It is two pages and goes over what I want and expect from them on the average swim, and what they should want and expect from me. This document, along with the one-page supplement, makes up the last three pages of this swim’s pre-plan.

    Early on in the planning, it became clear that the swim manager would need to have a lot written down to get across the borders and shipping lanes, so I began to draft a swim-specific pre-plan. As July approached, VTS recommended I submit a pre-plan for them to distribute to various agencies, and I was like, “easy, here it is!” They made one set of comments (thorough comments) and included emergency numbers, proper VTS procedure, and asked me to clarify some why’s and how’s. When they passed it on to the Port Angeles USCG station, USCBP, CBSA, and the Canadian Coast Guard, they got unanimous approval on the first try – something I’m told is a feat in itself.
