    A light group at the pool this morning. Swam with Peter, Dave M, Danny, and Keith.

    Had to get a little early, so when they decided to do some combination sets on a little longer intervals, I decided to work on IM.

    • During warmup I felt the best so far this week, which I think is partly due to getting more protein in my meals, and my sleeping has improved.
    • Set 1 - This is my best 5000 SCY swim in about 17 years going under 60 minutes. My goal was to be at 1:12 pace per 100 or faster. I am really encouraged by the results, although I did get ragged during the 4th 1000, the last 500 was solid. As soon as I showed up on the pool deck, Coach suggested doing it, and then lifeguard Colleen offered to take my splits, since her shift was over(I think it was a planned conspiracy).
    • I have reached my USMS 2012 GTD Goal of 606 miles with an current pace of 607.15 miles as of today. So the week that started out really awful ends up being pretty good.

    Great news, everyone! And just in time for the free gift-giving season!

    My USMS swimming vlog, the No. 1 Internet source of news about Jim Thornton's somewhat-related-to-swimming stream-of-consciousness ramblings, is now going to serve a second and arguably even more important raison d'etre:

    First of all, don't be ashamed! I, too, am not that technologically savvy. And figuring out how to make things as easy and enjoyable as humanly possible for anybody on earth to find and follow me remains an ongoing challenge.

  7. Post Turkey, poop in the pool

    Getting back into the normal routine this week after a refreshing break (not from swimming, but from my usual venue and workouts). Monday I decided to focus on just swimming smoothly, with a little bit of up-tempo pace work at shorter distances, so here's what I did:

    Tuesday's workout consisted of about 2000 in drills, kick, and pull before I did a 1000 continuous swim in which I had 4 hard 200s each followed by a recovery 50--all freestyle. My 200s were between 3:10 and 3:15, which is in my 1500/1650 pace range... yes, I know, pretty slow; but I've been on something of a plateau this year.

    Wednesday was a total bust because I waited until after work to try to get to the Y (lately I've been stopping on my way in or during the lunch hour). I made it to the Y about 6:45P, but by the time I got changed and spent twenty minutes in the steam and sauna rooms (I've been drinking tons of water and trying to sweat out the toxins to avoid the cold I felt coming on at the beginning of the week... it seems to have worked) the pool was CLOSED DOWN... 1 hour, 45 minutes earlier than normal! Some kid took a dump in the pool.... grrrr! Darn you, pooping kid!

    Yesterday's workout is one I've gone back to several times this fall and I felt like I was swimming it a little stronger: 4000 SCY in 80 minutes, 3000 of which was hard swimming (faster than LT pace).

    500 warm-up (mix of fr, br, and bk)--10 minutes
    20 x 50 on 1:00 (mostly :39-:41)
    no rest
    10 x 100 on 2:00 (mostly 1:29-1:30)
    no rest
    5 x 200 on 4:00 (3:10, 3:09, 3:08, 3:10, 3:11)
    500 cool-down (mix of fr, br, and bk)--10 minutes

    My goal here was to be swimming faster than 1500 pace, but stay relaxed; the last 100 of those 200s at the end of the workout was tough though; falling off from :45-:46/50y pace to :49-:50/50.

    EZ day today... we'll see what I manage to get in. Tomorrow I'll do a distance day.

    Swam w/ Dave, Dave, Keith and Danny. From the "why wasn't I listening when someone told me about this" department: Turns out that I exhale on my breaststroke too early. I've been told in the past to keep my head down when I breathe. But I never could because even though my mouth came out of the water, enough water came up with my head that I'd get a mouthful if I didn't tilt my head forward. So, I got the bright idea today of exhaling as my face is breaking the surface of the water. It worked! No more head bobbing! Why didn't someone tell me about this before? They probably did... I just wasn't listening.

  9. Short Course Friday and crowded

    SCAD has there meet this weekend so all the teams were in this morning for workout. Most of the laps swimmers were scared off so I actually got my own lane, YEAH!

    My back was still making it's pain known but it did not last much past 200 yards. The first part of my ritual 500 is always exceedingly slow.

    BK: 32, 31, 31, 30 = 2:08

    The plan is to get in for about 1900 yds tomorrow before work, but that depends on me getting up before work to do it. Otherwise, next week I'll drop from 1700 -> 1100 yds over 4 swims, then I'll be shipping off to Boston via car Saturday am if the weather is ok. Right now my wife and son are signed up as passengers, so it will be exciting for me to have company to blast some good tunes during the road trip

  14. Easing back into workouts!

    Hello everyone! I am back in the water. Sort of. I am happy to report that my wounds are healing nicely, and I feel fine! However, I still have little motivation to "get back to it!" I know this because I don't miss workouts at all, and as far as the social element, which arguably is the biggest, I don't feel like i'm missing anything or anyone. I'll see everyone at the xmas party!

    The interesting this is that swimming easy really activiates my big muscles, they are like saying, yeah! feels good! bring it on! But my joints and little muscles are like, ouch! That pinches! Careful there! So I think I need to take it really easy and get my body used to the motions again.

    Here's the measly bits I have done:

    500 warmup
    8 x 50 kick/swim IM order
    4 x 25 1 each stroke
    50 easy

    500 warm up
    4 x 50 kick
    8 x 25
    easy 100

    Most of my emotional energy has been in deal-sifting during the holiday shopping. I buy nothing without a 30% or more discount and free shipping. I did buy a pair of skinny jeans in bright orange from H&M. That place is so cheap! And not expensive, either, haha! How much would you pay for a pair of bright orange skinny jeans? I wear them like leggings. They were $10! I ran around the store looking only at things in my size (duh!) and with the special $10 or $15 labels.
  15. Like swimming through molasses it was

    I had a nice but tired swim at Riverbank this morning with Rondi. It was a clear and cold morning, and through the pool windows we were able to watch the full moon setting over the river during breaks during the first set. Here’s what I did:

    800 lcm warmup (400s, 200k, 200p)

    1 x 500 FR, mod. pace
    2 x 300, done as 50 ST (IM order) / 50 FR [I did the first one long and easy, and intended to do the 2nd one as 25 build + 25 fast + 50 easy, but it was clear by the 150 that I had no fast swimming in me this morning—I gave in and decided to make it a long slow swimming day rather than fight with the water.]
    3 x 200 IM, with 1st 100 kick on 1st, middle 100 kick on 2nd, last 100 kick on 3rd
    4 x 150 FR/BK/FR at drill pace, working on rotation and strong core
    5 x 100, odds IM, evens kick

    400 warmdown + play

    That was it!

    The reason I was so tired this morning is that I did a breaststroke clinic last night from 8-9. It was so worth it! The clinic was taught by my team’s head coach Scott, and was billed as an advanced clinic focused on racing technique. I learned that I was dipping my hands down too much on the recovery, thus creating drag with my arms during the glide phase—I am working on keeping my arms parallel to, and very near, the surface of the water. (This tests the limits of my shoulder flexibility, and left me a little sore). I worked on throwing my head into the water after each breath when sprinting—this helps drive turnover. Also got some tips on the pullout (changed the timing of my dolphin kick, and altered my hand placement after the pulldown from beside my thighs to the front) and on timing the approach to the wall at the start and finish. It was an hour well spent, and made me want to go to the other advanced clinics that are offered. But it did involve a lot of swimming at top speed, and I was definitely feeling the effects of that plus the lack of sleep this morning.

    Up at sparrows fart got in the widest lane and did 3850.

    Got a massage the other day so i felt like a noodle. the swim felt real good and now i am:

    1.06 miles (= 1,865 yards, = 1,705 meters) to next milestone (100 miles milestone).

    this swim was a long warmup , lots of 200's and a short cool down.
