nicely done. i still think it's gotta be mind-numbing, but maybe I'll try it next year.

Nice job, Ande. I see you took it out nice and easy for the first 1000. Good call on that!

Nice job. Did you like the B70 for 5000+? Going to write a tip on going postal now?

    hey pat
    thanks
    it was challenging
    I breathed/swallowed little water once

    Hey Knelson,
I stayed even with Larry for the first 800 or so he started to pull away from me then I pulled away from him
I just tried to stay steady the whole way
in years past I've taken several distance races out too hard like the summer after my SR year in HS
my best 100 LCM fly was 58
    I took a 400 IM out in 1:00

    Thank you Leslie
the B70 was a little tight and hard on my shoulders I was worried about rubbing but was fine

Not sure if I can write much on hour swimming other than

get in great shape by going to swim practice 4 - 6 times a week doing 4 - 5k per practice

    wear a speed suit

pacing is critical, start out very easy at a pace you can sustain for the entire hour, if you're not sure how to pace swim beside a distance swimmer who's about your speed and stay even with them

it's way better to start out too
    easy then get faster
    than
start out too hard then get slower

    BREATHE often

    GLIDE far on push offs

Don't make quick upward pace adjustments

get a counter / time keeper

have them put a kick board in the water on each 1000

keep your eye on the clock so you know how much more you have to go

Great job. man, 18:43 on your 1650 split is pretty stellar.

    Dude,

You did not come apart and even negative split out to the mile. To say you can swim is an understatement.

    1650 18:40.0

I haven't swum that far in one swim in years

    5,385?
    BRAVO ANDE!

I was supposed to swim mine today, but my training partner had to cancel at the last moment. Looks like I will swim it on my own now.

The bright side is that I was able to read your blog before I swim and feel "advised" going into it.

I remember last year thinking it was an ok experience after not doing it in years. But that in 2009 I would have to organize a swimmer in the lane next to me...

But afterall, my pacer will be the clock!

    Cheers!
