JimRude had posted a question on Facebook about a pool at the College of San Mateo (http://collegeofsanmateo.edu/swimmin.../swimming1.jpg), host of the Pacific Masters LCM champs this summer over the August 10th-12th weekend. As most of my client travel has me in the San Fran area, I tried a drop-in swim today to check the place out. The results were impressive:

  • 2 year old pool,
  • 8 wide 50 meter lanes set up SCY with a gazillion width-wise lanes,
  • Constant 7' depth
  • Ultra clean, perfect temp (79) and, I believe, a salt-chlorination system
  • Welcoming on-deck coach and a head Masters coach (of this team (http://www.smccd.edu/sanmateoathleti...cs/masters.asp) that made sure I had everything I needed to get to the facility

I only had an hour to swim, but got in far more than I had anticipated. This was purely a bonus workout for me this week as I should be able to do two, high-quality swims this weekend:

  • 1 x 250: various free drills
  • 6 x 50: on 1:00, kick/drill, mostly free
  • 4 rounds of:
    • 1 x 200: free on 2:40, descend through the round (2:24 -> 2:10+)
    • 1 x 200: IM on 3:00, descend through the round (2:31 -> 2:20)
    • 4 x 50: IM order stroke by round on 0:50 (1:00 on breast)

  • 8 x 100: on 1:30, odds easy free, evens IM order stroke add-up (1:06, 1:08, 1:18, 1:00 = 4:32)
  • 1 x 150: float down

TOTAL: 3,900 SCY

Commentary:

  • For all you west coasters contemplating a late summer LCM meet you have two choices in California that weekend -- Pacific at this pool or Southern Pacific at Mission Viejo. Both meets will be great events and chock full of competition, but, if you're only picking based upon pool quality, I'd choose the meet in San Mateo. They also have a 6 lane 25 SCY warmup pool.
  • Some bozo, I assume, yanked the fire alarm in the middle of my sleep last night at the hotel. That really messed with what was looking like a good night's sleep.
  • My efforts today were solid ... nothing was 100% ... and my freestyle seems to be clicking a little better.

    That's good to know. Mission Viejo was on my radar this summer, but San Mateo was not. Mission does have the advantage of being fairly close to where my parents live, though. Wow, just looked at Google Maps and the College of San Mateo sure is close to SFO!

    There's also a 3rd one in the Portland, OR area the final weekend of August...the Gil Young Memorial Meet. Competition will be there as well!! (I may not be though)

    I see Gil Young is listed as tentative on the OMS website. I wonder if it's a go for sure? It's awfully late in the year.

    I figured the late date was due to Omaha.

    I'm sure that's part of it. Last year the meet was the weekend after the Fourth, so same as Omaha this summer. It's possible that last August weekend is the only weekend the pool is available.

    I think both meets will be great. Don't get me wrong: the MVN pool has a lot going for it and does have the advantage of having grass and trees around the pool. Plus, if you want to get a feel for the pool a year ahead of 2013 Nationals, this is the time to do it. If I can swing it, I'll attend the Pacific meet at San Mateo, either Fri/Sat after a biz trip there or Sun prior to a biz trip. Weather should be a bit nicer in San Mateo, as well -- MVN has the potential to be quite hot at that time of year.
