Indy, Day 3

Rate this Entry
Yesterday was the third day of a great meet for me. Nationals have been somewhat difficult for me as of late (labral tear, elbow tear, insomnia, power outages, etc.) But this meet I was healthy, uninjured and got at least a semblance of shut eye. And it really paid off with 6 PRs, 3 NRs and near misses on 2 other NRs.

Day 3:

I felt pretty good during warm up, just some leg fatigue. By day three, when you're UW 15 meters for all your races, leg fatigue is inevitable.

100 back, 1:01.30, PR, Missed NR by .01:

I'm not gonna lie. I looked up at the time and was a little heartbroken. I would rather have swum a 1:01.5. My splits were good -- 29.3 & 31.9. But I didn't have the leg power on the second 50, especially the last 25, and that cost me. My turns were a little glidey (2 strokes before flipping) and my entry on my start could have been cleaner. I let myself be disappointed during my warm down and then shrugged it off. The time was still a PR and I have been the beneficiary of a .01 swing on other occasions. Plus, it will still be the AA time this year since Karlyn swam a 1:01.7 earlier this year. I knew swimming this on day 3 wouldn't be ideal, so I will have to figure out when and where to swim it rested. Certainly keeps me hungry! And I am encouraged since I still feel like my 100 training wasn't ideal this season.

Here's a vid that Stud took with a nice "dammit" at the end:

50 free, 24.67, PR/NR

I used to dislike the 50 free. But since it occurred to me that I could try SDK-ing on the start, I like it more and may start swimming it more often. I had a tad slow reaction time compared to my other swims. I took 11 kicks on the start and from the vid it looks like that took me to about 13 meters. Then, I took 9 rather than my usual 5-6 on the turn. My breakouts didn't look great (lack of access to blocks). My flutter kick/leg drive looked really solid until right at the end. I was thrilled with the time! I knew 1980 Olympian Sue Walsh had swum a 24.7 last month, so knew I had to improve on my Zones time of 24.86. Really happy with this for the final event of a 3 day meet. Ellen and Stud took vids. I think that is Teen Fort screaming at the end.

Best event: 50 fly
Most Frustrating event: 100 back

Here's a couple other vids from the meet:

50 fly vid:

-- shows a total of 13 strokes and a glidey turn

100 IM vid:

-- no SDK on breast to free turn
-- did not need that breath inside the flags

Battle Plan:

I'm going to reboot for LCM Zones in late June. I'll be moving in late July, so July and August I will likely not be as laser focused on swimming. And I have to find a place to train in Pitt. As for next SCY season, I will not go to Santa Clara -- shallow outdoor pool. I may focus on the Harvard SCY meet and Colonies Zones SCY instead. Onward!

Teen Fort did not have a great meet. She didn't taper enough. But she ended with a great race in the 200 breast, taking the win in the final 5 yards. She hadn't swam that race since age 14. Funny, that her best race was the 200 breast and mine was the 50 fly! She did enjoy the experience and meeting lots of masters. I think she will talk up masters swimming in college next year and she may swim at LCM Nats at U of Md next summer.

What a stellar meet. So nice to see all your efforts pay off. Especially neat is being able to have your daughter swim with you at the meet. Those memories will be far more rewarding than any medals or records.

BTW....the .01 is going to be good motivation to train for the 100 next year.

Gee, I'm shocked you aren't planning to swim at Santa Clara next year. Outdoor pool and a three hour time difference? Sounds exactly like your cup of tea!

Damn impressive Nationals for you considering you weren't even planning to attend.

Thanks Quick. It was a gratifying meet. Definitely cool to have Teen Fort there, and hopefully she will be back. It was nice hearing "go mom" when I was on the blocks.

Yes, that .01 will be on my mind for awhile!

Yep, I don't care how iconic Santa Clara is. Plenty of other meets to choose from. No east coast swimmer wants to swim backstroke outside.

Glad I did attend Indy! You never know when you'll be firing on all cylinders at these meets. You had a very nice meet as well. Congrats.

Great meet and truelly awesome times. I will remember that 50 fly for a very long time!

Great meet, Fort. Looking forward to seeing you at LC zones, where the pool is neither shallow nor outdoors! And there will be FINA walls to help with your backstroke starts.

Thanks Chris. Looking forward to the meet snd hope you are 100% by then. I have some unfinished business with the LCM 50 fly. And I do vastly prefer FINA walls for backstroke starts. I was slightly disappointed that we didn't have them in Indy.

But at least you'd gain 3 hours. So an 8am start (if you had such a thing) would seem more like 11am for you
But I can't blame you. I avoid meets at one local pool because one time when I did a meet there the conditions were horrible. I'll fly to Boston for a weekend for a meet at a fantastic facility

Awesome job at your meet!!! It really sounds like things just fell into place for you, and you nailed nearly everything well. I've been lurking here and on FB, reading about your times. Glad everything worked out for you.

Now hope your move goes just as well, and you find a great place to swim in Pittsburgh.

Leslie: Very nice to have met you at the Forum/Stalkers dinner! Impressive swimming all around for you and I've taken lots of mental notes from watching your races and listening to you. It was also very special watching your 50 fly on the way to warm up for my event and watching your daughter yelling "Go Mom" as you went for the finish in record time. I'm still waiting for a confirmation from my son at Dartmouth as to whether he knows your son. Plotting out my summer swimming and may see you at Zones in Richmond as I prepare for Mission Viejo/Disneyland trip.

    "Awwwwwwwwwwwwww Dammit!!"

It needed to go into print!

Tell Teen Fort she became a true Master this weekend. "Eventually" shrugging off the bad stuff, enjoying the moment for the 200BR, and gutting out an impressive 100fly at the end for some bling/ribbon.

Blog Lurkers: I will have the true, inside story from behind the "blocks" with Team Fortress at Indiana on my blog soon (yes, shameless bandwagon jumping for attention I know). Stay tuned for the expose!

Thanks Tim! I will definitely be in Boston next year at NE SCM Champs. That is really the perfect meet for me -- really nice pool, big enough to ensure lots of rest, etc.

Everything went exceedingly well with just a few technical miscues here and there. Maybe having the move on my mind helped distract me from the mental torment of taper.

    Likwise Bruce!

Teen Fort was a very good cheerleader for me and my friends, despite having a sub par meet herself. She doesn't have much experience in tapering after a few years out of the pool, and was a good sport about it all.

Keep training hard and smart and you will pop into the TT soon enough.
It is probably a very good idea to get one long course meet under your belt before heading out to MV. I hope the bribery works! Teen Fort was a very difficult toddler herself, so I feel your pain.

She seems pretty happy with the whole experience today. The 200 breast victory definitely helped.

Hey, I didn't lose my phone or car keys this meet. And realizing what a dumb blonde I can be, I even took inotes on where I parked my car.

Congrats on your fabulous meet. It's really great to see everything coming together for you at the right time!

I'm glad you and your daughter got to experience doing this meet together. Now you know how much fun Jared and I had doing Omaha last year and Mesa the year before that. I just wish things had worked out for us to be there this year but between my shoulder problem and the meet being in the middle of his finals it just wasn't possible. Hopefully we can do it again next year, most likely Summer Nationals.

Really, you might come for the U of Md meet? That is one that Teen Fort might be able to meet because her college does not start early.

What is the exact nature of the shoulder issue?

Fort, your swims were so excellent! You already knew that your training was effective - but with such great drops this year, I want to caution you against thinking big drops couldn't happen next year!!! Anything is possible - did you really think you'd be doing these times this year when you were a mid 27 50 flyer several years ago??? So there is no reason to put any limits on where you can keep going!!!!!!

I say lots of goals, it's fun to have no shortage of carrots out there!
50 free - sub 24 - and why the heck not? There is no reason to suffer through low 24 pergatory. Just punch it under!!!
    50 back - 26, c'mon!
100 back - sub 1:00 - the only question is: how FAR under???? I think your 1st 50 was just too slow - you can only come back so fast. If you were out mid 28 or even faster, you'd be well under 1:00, like looking around Where-Is-Everbody wall time.
    100 free - ?????? you never know!!!!!
    50 fly - maybe 24!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
50 breast - not sure about time, just visualize whatever time and PR/NR notation!!!!!!!!!!!!
    100 breast?????

Again, excellent swims and so much fun to think and dream up goals for you!!!

I'd like to think my Atlanta zipper story contributed to her rebound!

don't think I wasn't worried when you couldn't find your phone after Rich taped your race! LOL
