i've add a few events to my calendar. its been fun moving around and meeting so many people (and forumites including b'klyn girl today and our swimmer last week in santa cruz)

today was grimaldo's mile... the 5th annual and the first without our friend grimaldo but i know his smiling face was on the mind of many of us today as we swam.

Damn, that's impressive. Can I ask, to paraphrase that great band Cake, how do you afford your rock & roll OW lifestyle? I don't mean your financials, but what do you do for your career/job that allows this kind of travel flexibility?

the recession (or economic slowdown) has freed up a bit of time, and i split vacation time with my biz partner, we have a stone fabrication shop. i think my "no pets, no offspring" situation helps.

Is the "English Channel Double Relay" a double crossing? Will your boat be blogging, texting, tweeting, or doing just the usual navigational, nutritional, and inspiriting tasks?
I'd like to follow along if there is communcation during the swim. Gives the "you are there" feeling. (Oops! just doged another tanker; two ferries now bearing down on starboard.)

    yes, 4 person: double crossing.
i have also enjoyed the regular postings from so many crews this year.... (a great way to avoid getting any work done)
mike oram will be our pilot and i know there is a site where you can follow the gps coordinates of the boat. i will try to get the twitter thing together (but i am a tech-o-phobe).

This might be the event that gets me onto Twitter! Good luck on that crossing. I'm sure with guys like Terry on the team, you'll rock and have fun.

Have you done a solo crossing? If not, is that in the cards for your future?

i haven't done a solo. this relay is a feeler swim for me to get acquainted with the logistics and proceedures. i am hoping to book a pilot for a solo attempt in 2010.... also planning on tampa bay, manhattan and maybe santa barbara or pennock island.
i am unwilling to "bulk up" so for me the main issue is cold water tolerance (i hear the channel is up to 62 degrees)

might want to follow bruckner chase's attempt to swim from monterrey to santa cruz in a few days as well!

"I think my "no pets, no offspring" situation helps".

Not forgetting, of course, the huge impact from the fact that your wife not only understands OW but participates!

With apologies to the traditional Gaelic Blessing--for you and the Channel swimmers:

May the sea rise up to meet you.
May the wind and the tide be always at your back.
    May the sun shine warm upon your face;
the waves fall soft upon your fields and throughout your swim,
may God hold you in the palm of His hand.
