    III. Alaska, Hawaii, exotic locales

Most swims in Alaska and Hawaii appear to be ocean swims, but I will add info on freshwater swims as I find it.

Alaska: Freshwater swims in Alaska appear largely to be part of triathlons and not isolable as swims alone.

Southern Ireland: Vibes & Scribes Lee Swim, Co. Cork: Swim 2000m (1700 downstream, 300 up) of Lee River through center of Cork (the city), Saturday, July 19:
    http://www.corkmasters.ie/html/leeswim.htm
On this same Web site is an ocean water swim, Sandycove Island Challenge, 1600m, Kinsale, Co. Cork, Saturday, Sept. 27.

Lorne Pier to Pub swim, Louttit Bay, Victoria, Australia, 1.2k; over for 2008, 2009 registration opens October 2008 (saltwater, indubitably, but what other swim ends with a pint?):

Re: OW freshwater swim events, 2008

Thanks; I'll add that. The listing is a work in progress. It is interesting to poke around and see the different emphases: New York City has lots of infrastructure-themed events (swim around piers, islands, landmarks), Texas has family and fun events, California is high on the list of sanctioned swims.

    Regards,
    VB

Let's not forget Splish Splash in Lake in the Hills. This year it's on June 14, 2008. Register through SignMeUp.

Also, one of the swims I've found for Lake Erie is put on by the Ohio Masters. They have a 1 and 2 mile swim on July 26, 2008.

Looks like it's going to be a busy summer. Can't wait!

Thanks, those two dates and venues are now listed. I'll have to take a few days off before resuming. Many thanks to people who have responded here and via private messages about OW freshwater swims.

    Hi,
I am updating the original posts using the edit function, so new event listings will appear. And some are known by other names.

Ooops. My bad. I had a different website or two. And as we all know, there is nothing so fleeting as a website address.

Re: OW freshwater swim events, 2008

This should be added to the list:

The Point to LaPointe Swim in beautiful (but I'm sure cold) Lake Superior. It's a 2 mile swim for charity and they not only have a competitive race, but also a slower community swim (as well as relays). It looks like a cool swim!

Thanks! It does look like a good one; thanks for pointing it out, and it's now added. Everybody wears a wetsuit for this one; the wetsuit is required for community swim, and community swimmers also must arrange their own sag canoe/kayak.

I'm thinking of participating in Swim Across America; one of the institutions I do contract work for usually sends a team. I'd welcome ideas for extracting pledges. Thanks.

Thanks, Ripple! Being generously inclined (in some ways), I've included some of Canada's swims, and that listing is under "West."

Two or three mentions are better than none, and - look! a new Smiley!

Thanks to one of your posts, I'm going to look into the Croatia swim!

Re: OW freshwater swim events, 2008

I participated in last year's Swim Across America - Chicago event and it was very well run. They had a convenient way to raise pledges by building a web site to direct your contacts to. It was very easy and you can personalize it with pictures, tributes, etc. Also you receive an email each time someone makes a pledge.

Thanks, "lynnwa" and David: Good info on both swims. The Lake Padden does indeed look like a fun swim, and has been added.

Re: OW freshwater swim events, 2008

I've added a few more events and the final dates for some swims that were not fully organized when I put up information originally. Hope everybody has a chance to enjoy some open water this summer - lakes, ponds, bays, the might oceans! Lake Michigan around Chicago is now swimmable for short periods without a wetsuit. Big Shoulders is coming in September; the photo in my avatar is a view of the venue, Ohio Street Beach (out of sight to the left) and harbor. Basically, that's the water one swims in. Photo was taken the day after Big Shoulders 2007.

    Vive,

I found a good website that list many open water swims across the country. Many that we already have, and some we don't. The website is: US Open Water Swimming. They have a 2008 schedule on their front page.
