We hold medicine balls while doing it - free, fly and breast. Sometimes we have to toss them to a partner and keep the ball from hitting the water. And our hands are not allowed to go under water.

Now get a water polo ball and play "catch" 25 yards apart and do 25 push ups for every one dropped....welcome to preseason water polo!

    Re: Michael Phelps Vertical Kicking

Vertical kicking is fine though I believe it's far better and more relevant to do
    sprint kicks for time 15's, 25's, 50's, 75's, 100's, 150's & 200's

Kicking speed is a function of your:
    + push off or dive
    + streamline
    + body proportions,
    + kicking technique,
    + foot size and flexibility,
+ how much your knees hyperextend,
    + kicking conditioning,
+ psych, expectations, and mental toughness,
    + suit,
    + taper situation and
    + habits.

Vertical kicking might help conditioning but it's nearly impossible to measure performance other than saying you worked the set.

Absolutely a great video; and my age-groupers complain when we have to do regular vertical kick without weight, ball, etc...excellent! I cannot wait to share!

You forgot the single most important point...core strength. So many masters swimmers "mule kick" from their knee's vs. high in their core and you need to evaluate if the reason is bad technique or a weak core.

I think I'd be very careful about letting people do vertical kicks with a weight belt on. What if they go under and can't get the belt off? Even if they do get the belt off it could damage the bottom of the pool. I think holding a med ball out of the water would be just as effective. Obviously you wouldn't be able to do the pushoffs from the bottom of the pool, though.

Ok you just blew our whole sceme to try and convince Geek he needed to be doing this stuff....preferably at night in a very deep pool with no lifeguard around after a full meal and several strong drinks.
