The solo catagory is filling faster than ever this year. We are currently at 11 registered solo swimmers. We still have plenty of relay space available.

That swim really fetches me; it's on my life list. Perhaps I will take it up with the other hardy cold-water Lake Michigan swimmers and we might get a relay going. Some year. I'm glad the numbers are being kept reasonable.

We would love to have you up. A guy that swam Pennock last year is starting a race on the Chena river up around Fairbanks. The date is set for late June.

Thanks. The Chena Lake Swim, June 27, is noted on the list of freshwater OW swims: [ame="http://forums.usms.org/showthread.php?t=13046"]2009 OW Freshwater Swims - U.S. Masters Swimming Discussion Forums[/ame]

I should probably do a taste test with the Settlers Cove 1k before venturing into orca territory, but the Pennock Challenge has a high romance quotient, right up there with the Boston Light swim. I got a nice photo book by Robert Glenn Ketchum, The Tongass: Alaska's Vanishing Rain Forest, for pre-swim education. It's an Aperture book, so the photos are gorgeous, but most of the text was written in the 80s.

I'd like to do some hiking and backpacking in the event I do make it up to swim, one of these years. Not too interested in grizzly close-up opportunities!

Settlers cove sounds cozy, but you will be in orca territory with that one. The Tongass is still here and the parts that were logged are growing back. As for hiking, we got trails if you don't mind rain. I wouldn't be so quick to pass on the grizzlys, they are incredible to see and can be very fun to watch.

    Re: Pennock Challenge

Well I find myself replying to myself once again. Here is an update of where we stand with Pennock.
    Womens solo - Full
    Mens Solo - 3/4 full
    Relays - lots of room
It is nearing the end of early registration; the price of entry will not be going up after May 7, registration will still close June 6 but there will be no price change.

Registration will be closing for the Pennock Island challenge on June 2. To register go to www.active.com and keyword search Pennock. Mens solo still has a couple of openings, Womens solo closed, still have plenty of room in the relays both 4 person and 2 person.

Vivebene that swim's been on my list for a few years now. Mb one day!
It was quite capable in the water, perhaps a little on the slow side, but it wasn't impressed by my appearance.

Thanks for the updates! And assuredly you are not talking to yourself!

Maybe one day! I could only handle part of a relay (sorry!), and the rest of the team would have to embrace swimming the Pennock Challenge for its own sake, rather than the medal stand. However, I was in Lake Michigan on a day this month when water was 52.5 and air was 48 deg. So I am hardening.
