No. I wish they did because a towel is one of those items I tend to forget to put in my bag. On the other hand, the one place where I used to swim that did handed out mostly nasty looking stained towels.

I swim at Life Time Fitness, where they supply nice clean towels. Just outside each locker room is the laundry facility, and the towels are stacked all nice and neat on a counter.

I swim at a pool built for high school teams -we are lucky to get a shower after practice!

I chose to join the City pool/gym rather than the $$ gym, so no towels provided.

Heck, for the $70 a month difference in price I could buy a new one for every swim!

I can totally relate. One of the reasons why I have yet to join an actual Masters team has to do with the lack of locker room facilities. Both of the teams that are closest to me have locker rooms, but they're really not conducive to getting ready for work after a workout. I'm so spoiled by my fitness club.

I get a clean towel if I take the time to go upstairs to the "nice" locker room. Since I swim at 5:00 a.m. I usually stay down in the less luxurious locker room and get NO towel. The good thing is I can swim 5-7 minutes longer if I use that room!

Re: Does your pool give you a clean towel?

I have one flip-flop in each world. The gym provides everything -- towels, Q-tips, shampoo, conditioner and body wash. The rec center where my team practices provides ... liquid soap. So I have a whole other set of toiletries for rec center days. I also put the towel and suit next to each other in the bathroom at home so I can't forget either.

(Oh, and I, um, liberate a week's worth of Q-tips from the gym so I can squeegee my ears at the rec center. Or else it's swish-swish all morning at work.)

Re: Does your pool give you a clean towel?

The pool where I swim most days has a "club membership" that allows you to have access to a locked area of lockers and towel service. I enter and swim before the pool opens to the public and am not a member of the pool so I don't get a towel. But, if I show up with out one, I know I could go get one from them (and have done so in the past). The pool where we swim on weekends is owned by us and no, no towels. We're lucky to have toilet paper.

Some swimmers prefer to use their own towel in all cases.

Re: Does your pool give you a clean towel?

If the pool or other health club gives out towels, make sure they have been washed thoroughly in a conventional washer and not one of the so called “High Efficiency (HE)” machines.

HE washers are quite well known for leaving a lot of residue:

We have one of hose new HE machines. I can't believe that small amount of water really rinses things out !

Re: Does your pool give you a clean towel?

I didn't vote in the poll because the option "Yes, but you have to pay a dollar for it" wasn't available. I don't think a one dollar towel is a "given" towel...but they are always clean and very bleach-y smelling.

Of course I'm too cheap (I mean frugal) to pay a buck when I have a million perfectly good towels at home, so I only get one when I've forgotten my towel at home.

    Your belief is quite correct!!!

That small amount of water WON’T rinse anything out and you (and other buyers of these HE washers) have been bitten by a shark.

If you've got one of those new HE washers, here are a couple of links about what you're probably in for:

Well I love my HE washer. You don't use as much soap so there is less to wash out, therefore more efficient.

The only smelly issue I have is with the over-perfumed washing detergent, so now I make sure I get the "perfume free" instead of the "fresh linen" or whatever. Also always leave the door open a little so the air circulates and the gasket dries out properly.

I'm so glad the US have finally got with the times and front loaders are readily available. And the dryers are nice and big and actually dry towels properly.

Re: Does your pool give you a clean towel?

Just a point of info, the main problem with HE washers isn't the amount of soap that has to be washed out of the clothes -it's the total amount of dirt (which includes lint generated in the washing process) that must be rinsed out of the machine itself. In an HE washer with insufficient water, the clothes just tumble and chafe (and generate excessive amounts of lint) so the process is more like a running clothes through a dryer than a washer.

During investigations of the mold/mildew/order problems, the HE washers were disassembled and the inner drum (the part that contains the clothes) was been pulled out of the outer drum (which is a water tight chamber). In every case, the outer drum was encrusted with a thick, gooey sludge that resembles wet dryer lint and that's the source of the mold and odors.

The only way to fix the problem is to simply use more water and all the other "solutions" (special cleaners/fresheners and leaving the door open) will not work. Looking through the window in the door, the drum should be 1/2 full (for both the wash and rinse cycle) so that the inner drum will be thoroughly washed out.

If you've got an HE washer that's beginning to smell, try to find a tech geek who can hack the microprocessor control and adjust the water level. As a word of caution however, the door seal may not withstand the pressure from the increased water level and you could wind up with a flooded laundry room!!!

There are also high efficiency top loading machines which don't seem to have the smell issue, nor the gasket issue as much. My parents have had theirs for about 2 years now and it works great (even with my dad's smelly gym stuff) and no smell issues with the machine.
