On the first question; it's prolly the sugar Nazi's in action.
On the second, well never mind.
Since it has been three trillion degrees here the past month the Y apparently has become the spokesperson for hydration. At the Y this morning there was a sign that encouraged people to drink water and then went on to state to not drink soda or fruit juice.
I found this advice odd. If you drink soda or juice you are still hydrating. And, if you drink non-caffeinated sodas how is that really much different than water for hydration (ignoring all the other weird stuff in there)? While water is probably the best for hydration, what's the real drawback of the other two strictly for hydration?
Oh, and one kid pooped in both pools yesterday at this Y. How does that happen?

I always mix a little juice in with my water. The electrolytes make a big difference for me.
I'm no expert, but I think I know how to prevent the same kid from pooping in two different pools on the same day. So, I think my opinion on the hydration question should carry more weight.
AND... the effects of your average caffeinated beverages (coffee, soda) are not what you think (see link below).... so drink what you like, as long as it doesn't make you barf it up in practice!

Maybe someone at the Y believes that soda and juice make kids poop more than just water? Maybe they're on to something.

I've heard this same advice about hydration but never thought much about it. Perhaps this will shed some light on the reasoning behind such suggestions...
Fruit juices, carbohydrate gels and carbohydrate drinks containing concentrations > 8 % are not recommended during exercise. Beverages with > 8% carbohydrate concentrations require greater digestion, thereby slowing gastric emptying and delaying water getting absorbed into the body’s tissues.

Caffeine is a diuretic so I could see the logic of not drinking soda.
Not too sure on juice though.
