Yes it is, but I'd say that it's regardless of age of consent variations (16 etc.) it violates the coach-athlete relationship. Like a doctor-patient thing. It's there to protect everyone.

This story appeared today in our UK newspapers.

An unfortunate swimming coach sent an embarrassing text to all of the contacts on his phone by mistake, including family members.

When I was a member of another USAS team in the same pool I heard of the coach texting borderline texts to a teen girl. I met with him privately and told him to knock it off or he would be in trouble. The teen left the team a few weeks later and a few months later he was hit with a lawsuit for hiring a known sex offender to coach the teens on that team. That team still employs the coach I warned. That team I would have a problem being a part of. I left.

Even adults shouldn't sext, I guess.

I can't help but feel sorry for this coach, somewhat a victim of inept use of technology. And what if he had been sending out a message to his team and was the victim of some salacious spelling "corrections?"

What was once a "gray area" became a "slippery slope" and is not blowing up:

"CONGRESSMAN HONDA CONSIDERING EXPLORING “FORMAL ACTION” ON SEXUAL ABUSE IN SWIMMING"

    http://swimswam.com/2012/09/congress...e-in-swimming/

Yet here is how things went down at the USAS Convention HOD:
"USA SWIMMING CONVENTION: A coach can still date their swimmers if over 18-year-old!"

    Interesting viewpoint on this topic:

I crack myself up. It is jealousy. It is Boredom. I Did not accomplish enough when I was young, and I hate anybody faster/younger than me.

What a mess.I was going to throw up my hands at the complications of trying to be fair and protect the swimmers, but then I thought"the minimum age for drinking is 21 in most states,so how about coaches can't "date" anyone under 21."

    What an unfortunate incident.

Maybe it's a good idea for coaches to only have cell #s for the parents of underage swimmers and not the swimmers numbers.

Actually, he has been charged and arrested. He turned himself in this morning to police:

I too want to know why was Schubert fired from US swimming.
I went to Mission Viejo to watch Schubert work in the late 70's (they swam against the East Germans). Anyway, he was a hero to me and after reading about all the allegations, a big sigh along with me shaking my head is how I feel. I wish the victims prayers to heal and hope that he didn't cover-up the problem. Please keep us posted.

    Re: Swim Coaches in Trouble

From a Swimswam story about Curl:
Curl’s attorneys painted this as a low risk of recidivism, though a psychological report said that there was a “degree of sexual deviance” because of the age of Currin and the length of time of the abuse. Curl told the doctor that he takes the blame even though he said that Currin made the first move at the age of 12.

She made the "first move" at the age of 12? Yeah, I'd say there's a degree of sexual deviance!
