[QUOTE=Celestial;292495] I'm in love with YA paranormal books, not just Stephanie Meyer and Casandra Clare & JK Rowling, but even books you can find via smashwords and bookbub.

Are you a fan of Neil Schusterman's Unwind Dystopia?

    Guilty as charged.

I read Donna Tartt's new book, The Goldfinch, which is on pretty much all of the "best books of 2013" lists and overall I enjoyed it. I thought it tailed off a bit towards the end, though.

Not that I'm a religious person and I am not Buddhist by I do recommend An a Open Heart by the Dalai Lama. If you are dealing with personal or professional issues where you are kind of trying to sort things out it is a good read. I first read it when my mom was not doing well with MS and passed soon after, now I am having issues with a coworker and I am starting to reread it, rather than punch them in the throat I guess! I have to admit though that for me I had to sort of read between the lines to gain the inspiration I was looking for, it's an excellent read regardless.

I just finished reading Proof of Heaven after a friend suggested it. It's the story of a noted neurosurgeon's near-death experience and the vision of Heaven that he encourtered during the event. Interesting, as the book has a fair amount of more "technical medical" information in the beginning as the author described his situation, then brought in the personal affects of the situation on his family, and ultimately his own opinion of NDE's and life after death.

(On an aside, we have beening looking at the miracles of Jesus at the nursing home service I attend monthly, and am often in awe of Dr. Luke's accounts of the miracles, since he was a physican describing and documenting (the Great Physician) God's work through Christ. I mentioned this to a friend, who let me read the book.)

Has anyone else read Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell? I just passed the halfway point and I'm really enjoying it. I don't want to spoil it, but the book is a series of stories each set in a different time, from 1850 to the future. Each story ends abruptly and then the next story starts so you've got to wait until the second half of the book to see what happens in each story. It's an effective device because you get drawn into each storyline and then when it ends you slowly get drawn into the next. I just hope it can finish as strong as it has started!

I know there was a movie made last year based on the book, but I it's difficult for me to imagine how they could do it justice.

Yeah, I thought it was great. I realize the lack of a simple sequential narrative will be off-putting for some folks, but once I got the hang of it, I was fine.

Books, no, but I am trying to catch up on my magazines: Smithsonian, Commonweal, and some of my professional journals (math stuff).

Fans of Nordic noir (Stieg Larsson, Henning Mankell, etc.), check out Camilla Läckberg. She's got about twelve books out, seven of which have been translated into English so far.

Re: Read any good books lately?

I primarily read scifi and fantasy. I am a massive bookworm and a speed reader, but the combination of my new day job as a consultant (with long hours) and my night job as a coach is really crimping my reading time. As such, my old pace of 1.5-2 books a week has now gone to about 1 book every 2 weeks.

All that said, here are some of my recentish reads that I recommend:

    • Honor Harrington series by David Weber. Excellent military sci fi series, without being too "hard" for my tastes.
    • Anything and everything by Brandon Sanderson, but especially his Mistborn and Stormlight Archive series. I think he's one of the best fantasy authors out there right now.
    • Malazan Book of the Fallen series by Steven Erikson. Excellent fantasy series! It took me a while to get into the first book, but I stuck with it and am happily on book 4 now.
    • Dresden Files and Codex Alera series by Jim Butcher. Fan-freaking-tastic on both fronts, and I've read both series many, many times (for the Dresden Files, I've reread the series upon every new book release for the past 6 books and have reread it several times in between new releases)

Those are just the ones I've read in the past six months or so. I've got a whole long list of book recommendations, but I'll stick with the recent ones.

I'm Your Man: The Life of Leonard Cohen. If you are a Leonard Cohen fan or just intrigued by his lyrics, you will enjoy this book.

I read "A time to kill" on vacation & just watched the movie last night on T V. The book made me feel really uneasy in the too descriptive reading of a 10 year old being raped, the movie did a very nice job of skimming over this to get to the trial . I liked the ending better in the movie as well. If you get a chance to read or see this -- be aware of the oft used "N" word that fits the times but still hurts to read or hear!

I am slowly moving into the 21st century and recently got an e-reader. Being the cheapskate that I am, I'd like to find free books for it. Does anyone have recommendations for web sites to find free e-books?
