    Re: Could you form a medley relay using only blood relatives

    Yup - Mom, Dad, Brother, and me. I think we would probably go with my mom for the backstroke, me for the breaststroke, my brother for the fly, and my dad as the free. My parents could both pull off the free and the backstroke, but maybe not the others. My breaststroke is stronger than my brother's so that would probably be the best lineup. It would be fun to actually do this someday, if we're geographically compatible.

    Definitely!!! My daughters are excellent at all strokes except breast; my son happened to be a breast stroker!!!! I'd have Lindsay doing back, Rob at breast, Sarah at fly, and that would leave me doing free!!!! This would be my dream team medley relay!!!!!!!!!!

    Possibly, but the relay team would have to include kids.

    My son, my daughter, myself and my mother. Good enough for last place in the 18+ age group.

    Mom also won the 80-84 1000 Free and had 4 other top 5 finishes. Noah won the 200 Free and 50 and 100 Fly, with 3 other top 3 finishes. Megan and I were there!

    I replied no, but there was no option for "I could cobble one together but we'd suck and probably could only do the 200 (or even better, 100) medley." My sister used to be a swimmer, so she could probably manage breast stroke, I could do fly (ha!), my mom could do backstroke and since freestyle can be anything, I could have my dad or one of my cousins do doggy paddle for the freestyle leg. We would be slow as all get out, but we might finish legally. Thinking about my 73 year old father attempting to dive off the block is cracking me up, though. He'd have to start in the water (he was never a swimmer).

    Re: Could you form a medley relay using only blood relatives

    My sister Jill and I did a mixed medley with our parents in 2000:

    2000 Long Course National Championships - Baltimore
    Mixed 160-199 200 LC Meter Medley Relay
    ================================================== =============================
    160-199 Worl: # 2:01.22 8/23/98 Ttex-Usa
    S WENCEL, D GUTHRIE, B WENCEL, S NEILSON-BELL
    160-199 NATL: * 2:01.22 8/23/98 Ttex
    S WENCEL, D GUTHRIE, B WENCEL, S NEILSON-BELL
    Team Finals Points
    ================================================== =============================

    15 Montgomery Ancient Mariners 'B' 2:27.41
    1) Roddin, Jeffrey H 31 2) Roethke, Jill 30
    3) Roddin, Hugh J 58 4) Roddin, Ruth A 57
    1:10.53 2:27.41

    The Wolf family did a mixed medley relay at this same meet. They were in a different age group, but had the EXACT same time as us:

    20 Plano Wetcats 'A' 2:27.41
    1) Wolf, Tom 46 2) Wolf, Mary-Jo 38
    3) Wolf, Joe 44 4) Wolf, Kim 20
    1:13.47 2:27.41

    And technically not a "blood" relay but last year my wife Julie and I and my parents did the mixed medley at both Greensboro and Omaha. Here are the Omaha results:

    2012 Long Course National Championships - Omaha
    Mixed 200-239 200 Meter Medley Relay
    ================================================== ================================
    USMS Record (N): 2:02.32 8/15/2005 SAN DIEGO SWIM MASTERS
    Pipes-Neilsen, Karlyn
    Krattli, Caroline
    Lautman, Scott
    Van Baalen, Vinus
    Pl Name Sex/Age Club Seed Time Final Time Points
    ================================================== ================================

    15 ANCM 'A' X200-239 ANCM 2:35.00 2:27.58 0.00
    1) Roddin, Julie (F36) 2) Roddin, Jeffrey H (M43)
    3) Roddin, Hugh J (M70) 4) Roddin, Ruth A (F69)
    36.66(36.66) 1:10.45(33.79) 1:45.62(35.17) 2:27.58(41.96)

    Looking at this data, we got the exact same place and nearly the same finish time as the relay with Jill. More remarkable is the fact that my parents combined splits were only 0.25 slower in 2012 than the relay in 2000. I'm 0.25 slower today than I was last week so this is astounding!

    I guess that is a long winded way of saying, yes, to the question...

    Re: Could you form a medley relay using only blood relatives

    I replied no, thinking 'not for a Masters meet'. BUT, if I could do it with my kids then absolutely! Aside from my kids (and now my husband), I'm the only swimmer in my family. All my family members CAN swim, but they mostly can just do freestyle and maybe backstroke and breaststroke.

    So, if it were not a Masters meet, yes. All 5 of my kids are swimming competitively. If my husband and oldest sons and myself were a team, we'd be pretty decent.

    That sounds like so much fun! Sadly, even if we could afford a trip all the way to Mission Viejo, our kids are not in USA swimming. I'm hoping that maybe in the next couple years we can get the oldest boys on a USA team, but right now it's not in our budget. If we do, we'll have to save up and take a vacation trip out there or something. That would be a blast!

    If you are closer to the right coast, there are similar relays at this USMS meet:

    The only bummer is that it is gonna be SCY this year instead of LCM. My immediate family has insufficiently many to make a relay, even counting non-competitive swimmers. I hope to rope another family into teaming up.

    Not exactly a relay, but it gives me a good excuse to post this photo.

    The USMS webmaster and his brothers have been doing the Chesapeake Bay Swim for 25 years. I believe among the five of them they've done 81 crossings. This photo is from 1988. Can you guess which one is the webmaster?

    Re: Could you form a medley relay using only blood relatives

    Both of my parents were competitive swimmers in the early 1950s, both of my sisters also competed into junior college, I was the only one who swam in university and still swims. By combined age group, we could do pretty well in a mixed medley.

    I have tried over the years to recruit family into USMS, but they all have other things to do. They say.
    The opinions expressed in the above post are mine, not those of U.S. Masters Swimming. But maybe they should be.

    Greensboro Nationals -- My father, two sisters and I ... the most fun I've ever had at relays. Both of my sisters swam through college, but hadn't competed in ~20 years. We had to teach my younger sister the rollover backstroke turn in the warmup pool before the even (because it wasn't invented/legal back when she swam). We even created our own team for a year - Brundage Swim Masters (BRSM).

    Mixed 35+ 200 Yard Medley Relay

    Note how much we blew away our seed time -- all due to my sisters way exceeding their expectations !

    I'm in the same boat. Actually, my one son could do respectable breaststroke. I could do back, and my wife or other sons could do free. Nobody could do fly.

    55+ Mixed Sibling Breaststroke Relay (with an alternate - 68M, 66F, 60F, 59M, 57F) - Pretty well unbeatable for that age group and particular relay. Of course, I'm having a hard time finding that event at any meet!!

    Medley would be not too competitive.

    Re: Could you form a medley relay using only blood relatives

    Three older brothers and I, ages 62, 60, 59, and 55. All four of us swam in high school, and three of us swam in college. I (55) would swim backstroke, 59 would swim breaststroke (missed the '72 Olympic Trials by 0.5 seconds in the 200 breast), 60 would swim butterfly ('70 high school All-America in the freestyle relay), and 62 would swim freestyle.

    We talked about doing this years ago, but never got around to setting it up. I'm the only one who's currently swimming (and not very swiftly), but maybe we'll make this happen someday.
