Since you are trying to meet every participant, have you met Joy Tsuzuki? I was wondering if this is Edís mother.

Water Rat just threw down a great 200 free, confirming what readers of his blog know even though he doesn't, he trains for the 200 free.

Have not met her but it is Ed's mother. They are doing a family relay with Ed, Ed's mom, Ed's sister, and one of her kids.

Congratulations to Bob Strand for being the first swimmer to swim his age in the 100 Br-67 sec 67 years old.Rick Colella came close to being the second and the youngest, swimming it in 62 sec at 61.

Rick is having a great meet. He retired a few months ago and maybe now he's got more time to train. Scary!

Congratulations, Fort! And on your HIT swimmer Melinda's achievements (my age group, so I am a bit more sensitive than usual).

(I hope Creme Puff or her familiar also shows up at these things...)

Re: 2013 USMS Nationals SCY & LCM

Just a quick note for those at Nationals. There's an airport bus that stops right across the street from the Marriott complex (on Washington Street) that's only $1.75. I had to take a cab in from the airport since I got in so late, but took the bus back yesterday. Be warned that it's just a normal city bus route, so it makes lots of stops, but still it only took about 40 minutes from the hotel to the airport. If you're cheap like me and not pressed for time it's definitely a good option. It's the number 8 bus and just make sure it says "airport." Apparently some of the #8 buses don't go all the way to the airport.

Had a great time at Nationals. My swims were only so-so, but 2 best times. Here's a couple of pics from the social with Jason Lezak and Emily Silver. The first one is me, the second is ekw (Ellen).

Bah! Almost didn't sign up for the evil sprint. But while you're commenting, can you suggest ways to increase my turnover? I switched to a wider pull and now my turnover is too slow. I also have a ghastly wide kick, but I'm not sure I'm really willing to spend time working on it. I only do breast dolphin in practice. :-)

Thanks for posting the picture! It will probably show up on my Christmas card this year.

two drills I like for a narrower kick, although I'm primarily a freestyler after this meet.
    1) kick breaststroke on your back but don't let your knees break the plane of the water
    2) kick breaststroke on your stomach, hands on your butt. kick your hands with your ankles

One drill we do that keeps the fast hands with a fast kick later is:

3 strokes fast (shooting the hands) with flutter kick, immediately into 1 stroke fast w/ breaststroke kick, then repeat.

I like it, the breaststroke kids hate it.

L - did you see the video of that race? Seems to me your turnover and kick are just fine. This is the only race of yours that I've seen in which you did NOT come up from the dive AHEAD of the others. I think you would have had Kim if your dive/UW were your "normal".

what made you switch to a wider pull, btw?? This year, I tried to make my pull narrower!

This was kind of a botched race for me. That's what happens when you rarely swim something. I dove in and streamlined for what seemed like forever, almost forgetting to take a dolphin kick. Brain fart. When I did, it was just a quick one. So, yeah, definitely, lost the race on the start. Though I managed to short stroke both walls as well. Completely different race than the technically perfect one I had at NE SCM Champs when I somehow set the record. Win some, lose some. I didn't fret over it, and Kim is very very fast.

I widened my pull because Teen Fort told me I was spinning when I swam the 50 evil at the Sprint Classic last fall. I've also heard widening the pull was how Eric Shanteau improved his breaststroke times. My kick looked pretty wide to me in the video. I think I need some coaching help to fix my breaststroke, somewhat hard when I train solo. And honestly, I think I'd rather work more on free, which I started doing more of this year with my shoulder better. But I will continue to fake the evil. Hey, I even did the 100 this year!
