    Backstroke starting ledge.

Hi all. I am trying to make a "home made" ledge to practice with. I found the approx. size but, did not come across the depth below the water line allowed. Does anyone know this measurement or where i can find it? thanks to all that reply.

Here's an image that shows some dimensions.

I have swum in, and officiated, meets using Omega backstroke ledges. Officials are told to set the backstroke ledge on 0 (level with the waterline), unless the swimmer asks for help to adjust it. Possible Omega ledge positions: -4cm below the waterline, -2cm below, 0, +2cm above the waterline, +4cm above.

Sumo - thanks for the detailed diagram. Others say +/- 2 - 4 cm BUT on the diagram is shows +/- 20 -40 cm. I have tried the 2 - 4 it is way too close to the water line from what I remember using in Greensboro. I am inclined to see 20 -40 cm as the adjustable movement.

OK - after looking at more info from Omega and fina & u tube videos - 20 -40 might be MM not CM. It does seem to be at the surface on many of the videos. I stand corrected.

Then again, 40cm is 15 inches, 40mm is only 1.5 inches below the water line. I'm not a backstroker. Which seems more logical?

Well try # 2 has worked out. I have used a piece of 1 1/2 inch PVC from home Depot. Drilled one hole in opposite end to run nylon rope thru to go around whatever block post/poles that you will be using with the starting block and used a caibineer to hold the 2 ends together with loops at the ends. This seems to work well as 4 of us tried it a practice last night. At least it will give me a chance to practice some type of starting ledge before Nationals.

The Nationals thread said they likely wouldn't have the ledge at Riverside.

After the past 2 National events WITH the ledge, I find that none this year a poor call.
