    Fitness in general vs. for a specific sport

    I don't work out with a team, but I'd say I go pretty hard. I swim 2-3 thousand yards 3 times a week, sometimes 4. I do about 3-4 meets a year. I also ski 15-20 days most winters and lift weights a bit.

    The other night, I played my first softball game of the season. On my very first at bat I hit a triple. When I got to third base, I thought I was going to die from exhaustion. I was totally out of breath and gasping. Yet, I can jump in the pool and swim a pretty vigorous 400 warm up and not feel taxed.

    Shouldn't some of my training in the pool translate to the softball field. What gives?
