    martin,

Re: 2017 World Masters Champs in Budapest, info for USMS

    Quick review from Budapest.
In short, it has been pretty awesome. I had heard some of the challenges of prior meets, but honestly, this meet has been impressive. The organization has been very detail oriented, and the scope of the operation is MASSIVE. Honestly, I cannot imagine a community that could host a meet of this scope quite the same way. Duna Arena is nothing like any facility I have ever seen: 2 10 lane 50 m competition pools, 2 outdoor warm up pools (one wasn't even being used), a huge indoor diving well with tons of lanes for warmup as well. Hajos National Swimming Center, had another 2 competition competition pools, an outdoor warmup pool, an indoor warmup pool, and 2 diving pools that were not being used. All of those facilities I mentioned were devoted just to swimming and not the other FINA disciplines during the course of our meet. The meet has been efficient but not hurried. While there are some things clearly different than US meets, for instance moving through rows of chairs, check in, etc... those things felt somewhat necessary given the many primary languages represented. Oh and basically stadium style seating everywhere but one competitive pool.
The awards ceremonies were pretty cool, as you got up on big stages, got announced and made you feel great. Each primary area had neat athlete areas with food vendors, beer, coffee vendors music, and souvenir shops: a festival type atmosphere. In short the scope of things with huge.
While I am obviously 99.9% positive on the experience, here are my only criticisms. I brought my 81 year old dad who has some ambulatory challenges. There is basically no easy way to get him around. No elevators that he was allowed to use. And at Duna, the fans are 100% segregated from the athletes. I would have to get him through a different entrance (other side of building) and up probably 5-6 flights of stairs, then go my route. No exceptions. Oh, and athletes for the most part are not on deck. You have other areas, but like in big time meets for the superstars, the decks are kept clear. You just can't walk around everywhere like we do at a USMS championship meet. Navigation from one area to the next is limited by lots of security. Bottom line, imagine a meet like Olympic Trials where athletes and fans are in different areas and access is limited.
In short, not to sound like a fan boy but well organized, unbelievable facilities, an absurdly supportive city (Hungary is really behind swimming). Had a great time. It would be difficult to imagine another venue doing as well unless they really commit to adding pools.

Props to the USA coaches. They were constantly providing useful info which helped tremendously.

    Interesting. Thanks Greg.
Hey, for such a strong backstroke nation, where were our sprint backstrokers?
Also, 50-54 count would have been higher had Stewart not spent most of the past 12 months rehabing his elbow

I believe Stewart is still 45-49. Take the times from Masters Nationals and the the male 50-54 medal count would have been much different.

The 60-64 women and men were quite impressive! My teammates and I accounted for quite a few of those medals!
