    Richard Szuba

Richard died in Beaumont Hospice at Beaumont Hospital, Oakwood Campus on December 19, 2017 from complications of emphysema due to smoking. He was 69 years old. He was born June 4, 1948 at the old Providence Hospital on West Grand Boulevard in Detroit, MI.

Richard was a lifelong member of Sacred Heart Parish in Dearborn, MI. He served there as an altar boy and an usher for over 60 years. He was also a member of the Father Patrick O’Kelley Knights of Columbus in Dearborn for many years and was their recording secretary.

Richard graduated from Sacred Heart High School in 1966 and from Michigan State University with a Bachelor of Arts degree and a major in Political Science in 1970. He retired from the Ford Motor Credit Company and remained in his Dearborn home until recently.

He was a competitive swimmer and member of several teams including Patton Pool in Detroit, Sacred Heart High School in Dearborn, the Dearborn Country Club, and in the Master’s Swim Program he swam for the Ford Motor Company FAST Team. In 1965, he won the Class B State Championship for the 200 yd. Individual Medley. The Szuba family is the only one in Michigan High School history where all 4 boys won a Michigan High School State Championships.

Richard swam in USMS for over 25 years and attended the first two Michigan LMSC Banquets and was honored for his continuous loyalty for renewing his membership every year. He was very thrilled to win a door prize that was a book written by Jeff Farrell about the 1960 Olympic Trials held in Detroit and the 1960 Olympics held in Rome because as a 12 year old he witnessed all of Jeff swims in the Olympic Trials qualifying meet held in Detroit at Brennan Pools.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Evelyn (nee Maher) Szuba, his father, Anthony Szuba, DDS, and his youngest brother, Martin Peter Szuba, M.D. He is succeeded by his siblings Mary Jo (Lawrence) Crane, Christine (David) Carroll, John (Irene) Szuba, and Tom (Telethia) Szuba.

He will be missed by all in the swimming community.
