#10 in the 1st of the Mts. with 98.5 miles after the rest day.Froome gets a flat but is back in the peloton quickly at 40 miles to go. At 24.8 tp go leaders have a 6:50 lead over the peloton. 18 to go Team Sky leads the peloton in an effort to bring Froome closer to the leaders but it turns out the VanAvermaet [ himself said that he will be out of yellow today]is still out - way out - -ahead of the pack!!! Alaphilippe goes off the front over the last Mt.and wins the stage.l/ 2nd on thew day was Izaguirre 3rd Tearamae.
Yellow - VanAvarmaet and extends his lead over Froome and others to the surprise of all the announcers. He is 1st in the GC and 1st in the King od the Mountain jersey as well 2nd Gearing thomas also of team Sky Froome lost time and is now 3:21 back.

Darn, I missed that! What a hoot! We did watch it last night, though, and it was a gutsy ride by VanAvermaet to keep the yellow jersey.

    Re: 2018 Tour de France

Day #11 67.4 miles of it seems mostly uphill or steep decents!. At 54 miles to go, 7 are in the lead with the Peloton 4 1/2 min. back.
at 40 miles to go,3 leaders a 2nd pack of 26 and the peloton 6:34 back. Are they waiting too long to try to chase?
Movistar pushes the pace to try to put team Sky in their place. Valverde goes put on a push on the 4000 foot decent. Peloton now 3 min. back. 3.1 miles to go Geraint Thomas drops the hammer to try to catch the leader of the race and does to win the stage and put him in the Yellow jersey of the T D F race! Froome ,not wanting to catch his teammate, holds back for a while and then goes out to finish a drag race at the line to take 3rd on the day but 2nd overall now! Froome is 1:25 back of Thomas with another steep mt. finish on thur.
A hint of how hard today was showed when the 3 highly rated sprinters were dropped out of the Tour because they finished outside of the time limit of today. They were Cavendish +1 hour 5 min. Renshaw +4 min. and Kittle +42 min

    Re: 2018 Tour de France

Stage 11 was designed to be tough on the sprinters, but what a surprise for Cavendish to be dropped! After crashing out last year, he began this year’s race with 30 Tour stage wins on his résumé and had hoped to close in on the record of 34, set by the Belgian Eddy Merckx. It was always fun to watch him battle the lead pack to the finish of each stage.

    Re: 2018 Tour de France

Will this be his last tour? The announcers were not sure of his return to the Tour after last year and now this year.
I like seeing those 3 in the last sprints!!

    Re: 2018 Tour de France

at 93 miles 2 off the front with 2 back some & the peloton 1:43 from there. VDay #13 of 21 105.3 miles of mostly flat with some rollers.
Vinchinzo Nabali had to drop out from the tour from a crash that happen near the race finish yesterday. A fan was in the space he was riding and the camera strap he was holding caught the hand & handlebar of Nibali's bike and threw him to the road causing a fracture to his vertebra! Another "jerk" rushed out to hit Froome in the ribs. I hope he was arrested for the "assault"
At 40 to go leaders and peloton back 52 sec.
At 20 to go --pretty much the same. peloton going 36.4 mph
at 10 the lone leader Micki Schar is still off the front by 18 seconds.
with 3 to go Sagan is back about 25th biding his time with Kristoff and Demare.
At he last 100 yards the 3 take off and Sagan powers by ti win his 11th stage. 2nd was Kristoff and 3rd Demare.
The top GC guys remain the same.

    29 miles - P back14:16
    22.2 miles 3 bearers go forward - 13 in a chase group :56 back and 12 at 1:11

    Re: 2018 Tour de France

Mon. is the last rest day before the 3 tough days in the pyrenees mountains. Will Thomas keep the yellow leader's jersey or will froome finally put out the effort to pull back 1:39 of time. Will Team Sky team orders be in place to let one win over the other or to let them fight it out>

    Re: 2018 Tour de France

As we have seen in the last few long stages kind of "boring" all afternoon rides, the organizers of T D F have started thinking about how to "liven it up" Shorter distances that would promote more attacks and more mid race sprints. What do you think?

I think that it would be a poor decision to "update" the Tour based upon current entertainment standards. Much of the gruelling long rides help to identify the true leaders of the race. Too much tradition.

On wed. they will try a "grid start" with the top 20 at the front. Not much of any advantage since they ,I think, group into the teams quickly.

    Re: 2018 Tour de France

Day #16 Farmers block the road with hay bales and straw!! The police try to remove them in time for the riders to pass but, some are still blocking the way. Tear gas/pepper spray is used but, the wind blows it into the riders eyes! The race is stopped for 15 min.
68 mi. to go has 44 in q breakaway and the peloton is 2:32 back
43.1 mi. -10 off the front - 30 or so in the chase :45 back and the peloton back another 8:45
37mi. -Gilbert is going fast downhill and at 36.4 locks up the back brake and skids into and OVER a stone wall!. Out of sight for a while when the motorcycle ,medics get to him,Alaphilippe goes by just as he gets back on the bike and gives chase.
    22mi. 12 up front +6 chase +peloton back 11:43
    11.4 mi. - 17 leaders + 7 chase + P back 10:07
8.4 --- Adam Yates goes off the front to climb the peak and crest the top to start the fast downhill finish .
Adam Yates gives a hard pace but crashes in a high speed[50.4 mph] turn. He gets up but Alaphilippe goes to the lead and finishes in 1st place at the line with Izaguirre 2nd and in 3rd is Yates
The peloton finishes later by 8:50

    Re: 2018 Tour de France

stage #17. This 40.4 mile ,3 mountain race will be the shortest distance in 30 ears! The top 20 riders start like F1 in a staggered grid at the front with "lights out" to start the race. It looks good but, has no effect as teams quickly regroup.
    37 mile mark -2 leaders -- chase of 19 "21 back and P 1:09 back
    25 mi. ---3 lead --- 11 chase 1:08 --- P 3:28
    19.9 ---3 lead with 5 back :47 --P 2:42
Sagan has a small crash but, gets back on quickly.
10.1 Alaphillipi goes to front to win more "king of the Mt. points then backs way off knowing he can't follow up the last mt.
7.9 Froome follows another to a little spurt but is pulled back to Thomas group. At this point Nairo Quintana goes off the front on his own and catches the lone leader. Then passes.
4.0 Q is still leading This move might pull him up from 8th to 5th.
2.7 Q leads martin by :22 sec. Yellow group back 1:10
1.0 mi. Q is hold tight to his lead and tom Dumoulin jumps past Thomas.
At the line 1st is Quintana wins for his 2nd ever T D F stage win. 2nd and is also 2nd in the leaders now.
is Dumoulin and 3rd Thomas. putting Froome 2:31 back of his time.
Was this the tipping point to lock one Thomas for the entire tour win? Froome looked as if he had no response for the top 2 riders at this late part of the race.
