Interesting. It will challenge my brain (in a good way) to come up with an event strategy to maintain freshness for the only event that really matters, the 400 IM. I think I'll have to pretend to be a sprinter for the first two days ... something like:
    • Friday - 100 IM and 50 back
    • Saturday - 50 free and 50 breast
    • Sunday - 400 IM and 50 fly

Assuming I can make it there, that could be fun.

Hmm, if I can make it down there I should have a pretty eclectic lineup too. Not because I'm saving for 400 IM though!

Have Nationals been here before? Does anyone know how much of a hassle (or not hopefully) parking would be?

I attended Nationals there in 2011. Don't recall having any parking problems. I do remember stubbing my toe, but that was not because of the parking.

For any meet directors who may be interested, attached to this post is a Meet Manager Time Standard file for the Mesa NQTs that you may wish to import for your SCY meets this season. I had to Zip the file to be able to post on the Forums - you may have to extract the file from the Zip before importing to MM.

Special thanks to Ed Saltzman for creating this file.

In 2011, they opened a big field next to the pool and parking was fine. Having said that, Uber/Lyft are quite accessible here in the greater Phoenix area, so that will be your best bet for zero parking hazards.

Just bring your sunblock whatever form of transport you take; plan on stopping at one of our many area Costcos before the meet. I remember all these reddened midwest/northeastern swimmers by Sunday in '11. Re-apply sunblock pretty much everytime you get out of the water unless you train outdoors year-round.

Will definitely do that! It'll early in the year for me to have picked up any kind of tan from St. Louis and I don't have a February honeymoon to the beach this year.

I *think* I got preliminary permission to go to Nationals from The Boss, we will see if that holds.

Good to hear that you might be going to Mesa. John and I plan to go. Do you think we can field some SLAM relays?

I can certainly check and see if anybody else is planning on going. I'm sure we won't have the 18-35 ages presence that we did in Indy, but maybe we can patch together some relays.

Hey - will there be the tents to rent again? That would be fantastic!

Hey, Michael! I haven't seen you on here in years! Nice to see you back, even if it's for just a quick question.

Remember the last Nationals in Mesa with you, Deb, and James? That was fun (except for the heat)!! I will never forget that it was at the moment we were all together having a beer that we heard Osama bin Laden was taken down.
It was also then that I learned a rare (for our area) tornado hit just a few miles away from our house.

No Mesa for me this year. I'm headed to Albuquerque instead for the National Senior Games.

    Good luck!

Where did you read this? As far as I can tell the 1650 is the only event where swimmers are required to meet the qualifying time to enter:
Competitors may enter up to three individual events without meeting the national qualifying times, or a maximum of six events if they meet the NQTs (i.e. have swum a time equal to or better than the NQTs during the past two years). Exception: Competitors entering the 1650 freestyle must meet the NQT

Agree - I only see that the 1,650 is a MUST have Q time. Others may be entered in 3 without a Q time.

Interesting that aztimm just completely deleted his rant...er post. Seems like a "mea culpa" would have been appropriate.

TBH, it's really generous for USMS to adopt such a honor system approach to qualifying for Nationals, period. I mean, I understand the desire to be inclusive and use Nats as a gathering of Masters swimmers as much as a championship meet, but it is technically a National meet.

That said, I had been planning on going this year but have had some unexpected expenses so far and so probably will not be spending more money on a swim meet... maybe next year in San Antonio.
