Have you retired and moved near your children?

Would love input (pros and cons) if you have retired and then moved near your children.
    Thanks!

I retired* and then moved near my in-laws (like as in I can look at my back windows and see the front of their house on the adjacent street), so that is sort of like the same thing, right?

    * Actually I quit working and became a stay at home dad, but my wife prefers that I say I "retired". Makes our working friends more envious :P

Although I don't have children, I live in an active adult community (Del Webb Sun City) where I see a constant ebb and flow of people moving in and out to follow their children. I can't tell you how many people did this, and then as soon as they get settled, their child (or their spouse) gets a new job in a new city, and they all end up moving again.

Looking at it from my perspective, I find that as a "con" rather than "pro" of following your children. Everybody has a different situation, though, and it will ultimately come down to what you feel is best.

Nope -- Still live in our house since 1972. Both adult kids are within 20 mins. away.

Retired (semi, anyway) but stayed where I was as we care for my mother in law who wanted to stay in her home.

I've watched some of my retired siblings chase kids across the country, or set their travel for grandkid time. My kids are still in the process of making plans, and they live half a country apart. Perhaps, we will one day move somewhere near a key airline hub so visiting will work both ways, but for now, why? House is paid off, cars are paid off, and we enjoy the small town life.

Yes, it is how you say it because taking care of kids is the antithesis of being retired - that was the busiest and best time of my life. How lucky you are to get to spend time with them! Thanks for your comment.

Right now I am staring at a medical retirement right in the eye. In all probability I would likely end up moving away from my children once we decide where to move to. But then 2 of them are affected by the Navy and Coast Guard so they end up at different coastal postings every few years.
