    Metrics for fitness swimmers

    I am wondering if there are commonly used metrics for use by fitness swimmers to measure their progress. As we all know it is easier to maintain motivation if one feels one is improving. What I am looking for are things the non-competitive swimmer can use to measure their progress in the pool. Metrics that could be measured in club workouts would be ideal.

    Some of things that come to mind are distance in a given time (T60, T30, T20, T15, T10, T5) and time for distance (400m, 1000m, 1500m, 5km). Also some sort of stroke count metric might be good, 50m time plus stroke count being the most commonly cited.

    My goal is to embed these into an online log that people can use to track their progress.

    Any suggestions?

    Another metric for general fitness: resting pulse rate.

    A true "resting pulse" must be taken first thing in the morning, in a reclined position, before even sitting up in bed.

    In general, a person's resting pulse should slow down as he/she becomes more fit.

    If you monitor it regularly, t's also a good way to tell if you're overtraining. If your resting pulse rate rises (and you can rule out other causes, such as illness), it's a sign that you might be overtraining.

    I'm actually looking to help my coach set up an online accessible team management application, along with ability to do online coaching. It's one of my longer term tasks...
    He's the swimming guru, I'm the business and computer geek-ette.
    Do you like it? Do you find it useful?

    I like it, I can even coach all aspects of the swim, bike and run., and my clients can access for the work outs without my help I just pay $9 a month for each client. How ever I like the money I make from video stroke analysis better, I make all of the money and do the stroke analysis with my analysis program that costs me $99 a year and send out my own workouts to them.

    Here is a note I received today from one of my clients

    (1/2 mile) I swam it in 11:54!!! If you remember at the last sprint tri I did it in 16:02. I believe that all your help really reduced my time!!!! Of course there are still some things I need to work on (long axis rotation especially), but w/out your video analysis i don't think i could have done so good. I remeber you saying we'll get the mile time down to 25 minutes, well i passed that.

    Trainingpeaks

    I use trainingpeaks for my coaching and like it.

    There are a couple of different programs that you can use to plan a year and send out workouts. Trainingpeaks does that but also has good feedback management. When I open the page for a client I can see from the color coding if they have done the workout and logged it or cut it short, or not logged it.

    The feedback is excellent. I receive an email every time an athlete logs a workout. The feedback is what puts the trainingpeaks a step aove the other programs out there.

    You can also setup a forum just for the athletes you coach.

    Not sure of your situation but trainingpeaks would be used mostly for individual athletes with different workouts. If you were coaching in a squad type format I'm not sure how it would benefit you.

    My interest stems from the fact that Masters Swimming Canada is moving in the direction of providing this kind of functionality to it clubs and swimmers across the country. Maybe this is something you could do for USMS instead of just your coach? The broader audience might make it more economical.

    In my swim stroke analysis program I keep every video they send me with the corrections I have made then they send me new videos and check for improvements. They record of their progress then they fill out on swim shark the workouts I supply to them and mark in the times they do. all for $50 a month.

    I think something like that would be a neat service that USMS could offer.
    I can see a number of ways it can be approached... Not sure which one would be the best without taking a closer look at different factoers.

    Considering our guys do a lot of in-house database development, they may have some desire to develop an in house system... (Time and finance always being a consideration)

    Or they may feel, (politically) that this may be best left to individual clubs and coaches.

    I can certainly scope out to see if the idea has been brought up, or bring it up and what the sentiments are.

    Thanks for the input. We already do video analisys in our clinics, and find that people love it.
    Recently I (my coach and I) invested in dartfish too, but haven't had a chance to fully implement it yet.

    I think that maximal swims require a lot of mental effort, and if you aren't sufficiently motivated you could get the wrong idea from one. I would recommend swimming a moderate pace 200 at the beginning of a workout, and recording your time and heart rate. Then make a table of times and heart rates to check your progress. You'll be looking for speed improvements at a constant heartrate, or heartrate drops with a constant speed. Unlike an all-out swim, this is something you can do every day. That allows you to accumulate a lot of data points to more reliably track general trends.
