Suggested Open Water Swim plus 5K and 10K Postals

Wanted to send out word about a great summer lake swim that was held in Pleasant Prarie, WI on June 30, 2007.

They offered a number of distances and even age bracket events. So not only Masters swimmers were included.

The setting is beautiful. It was really well organized. The course easy to follow. The water temperature just perfect for competition.

We had 11 Chicago Smelts there doing either the 1-mile or 3-mile events. There were a few other active Illinois Masters swimmers there.

Pleasant Prarie was just a short drive from the city. Just slightly over an hour and just over the border in Wisconsin. It was a fun warm up race for Big Shoulders.

As a reminder, we're in the middle of our summer Postal Competition period. Everyone has until September 15 to complete and register for either the 5K or 10K Postal Swim Competition. (see http://www.usms.org/longdist/ldnats07/5k10kentry.pdf for the details).

We have done one centralized 5K swim. We kept it small as we used a free public pool on the south side of Chicago. And, we wanted to see if we were going to get complaints from any of the pool managers or other people who use the facility. We were able to conduct the event with no complaints at all.

We are looking to run another 5K event possibly July 29 or August 5. And it's looking that August 5 might work the best.

We only have 1:45 minutes to conduct the event. And when we set the date, we'll want to limit this to 15 entrants.

If anyone is interested in participating in this next event, please reply to this post.

This pool is quite shallow in the shallow end. And there are no dividing lane lines. There are lines on the bottom of the pool. But, it's an outdoor 50 Meter pool and quite a beautiful pool.

Best of all, they have a really really fun waterslide at the facility. So you can reward yourself with some extra excitement after the 5K.

The goal is to have another 5K event in late August. But don't wait until the last second to get in your swims.

We want to get as many Illinois Masters to participate so we can make relays. We hope that people will be interested around the city, or even to come into the city from other destinations around the state to complete the 5K.

A centralized location for a 10K event is in the works. I hope we can get this set up and executed. Stay posted.

    Have Fun.

    Dave -

Was the Wisc meet a cable swim, or triangulated swim?

Triangulated. And it was pretty easy to sight the buoys. Unlike at Crystal Lake this past weekend where it was harder to sight the buoys as they were small and the wind was pretty strong.
