I love swimming.

If someone thinks swimming is boring, they are very confused.

It's like any other sport such as rowing, cycling or running...

Apparently he must think being active is boring.

I feel sorry for the writer. He's probably fat.

This hack is pissed that he had to cover the meet when he probably wanted to cover those horse or the NBA finals. When you are reporting on an event, it is not your job to tell us how you feel about the sport. Just give us the facts, desribe who shinned and who was struggling, and get some interviews. Also, when was it declared that swimming is a boring sport because I didn't get the memo.

The writer probably never swam competitively before, so he probably can't appreciate it as much as we can. I am that way with basketball, it just isn't my thing.

It should be known that San Jose (my hometown) and the Bay Area is actually a great area for swimming so maybe next time the newspaper should get a writer who knows what it is about... like me.

I've never understood anyone who thinks swimmign is boring, especially meets wher the scores frequently get down to the last relay of the day!

I used to have a coach who said that if you get bored swimming, you aren't working hard enough. He also used tennis balls to get our attenttion when we screwed up.

Well, they do say to mix up your sports a bit if you get bored. Your coach seems to be practicing that idea--swimming...tennis ball throwing....

Seriously, I think a lot of ppl are conditioned by contact team sports like football, hockey, basketball...and they can't deal with a sport that involves simple speed, stamina, coordination--AND NO FIGHTS! Maybe if swimmers tried to push and shove one another out of the way as they proceeded to the end of the pool, our correspondent would like it better.

That is soo true!! In my lifeguarding class we had to swim a 500 mix of breast and free to pass the swim part of the test (yea the instructor told us that and I had to keep myself from laughing). It was soo hilarious to see all this big, ripped football players get in and start huffing and puffing (and whining up a storm!) after 25 yds. I pretty much cruised the whole thing and finished about a lap before everyone else. The instructor made me teach the football players how to do breaststroke right. It was pretty funny.

As for swimming being boring....heck no!!! There are times during long sets when I tired of starring at the line, but then I just pretend that I'm racing like Phelps or Coughlin. I always use long sets to figure out my problems too. Maybe that's why I lose track of how far I've gone so often.

Let's be honest, unless you are involved in the swim meet, probably 90% of the races are boring (to a particular spectator). Just like every heat in Olympic Track-and-Field up to the finals. And most of the NBA regular season (maybe even the first round). And the NHL hockey regular season (it was like it didn't even exist this year)... I hope you are getting the idea. All of these *can* be exciting, if you decide to look for it. A sport is more interesting when there is something on the line, or something new to learn. And less interesting when the writer is moping about wanting to see something else.

I haven't read the article, but I agree that sports writers should concentrate on being journalists, instead of opinion editors. After watching ESPN, a lot of those guys are more interested in being sensational, rather than professional.

I don't think I've ever seen a boring race!!!!!!!! I love to watch how different people produce their strokes. I love to see if i can detect a mistake that maybe I make and determine how it can be corrected.

the coach who would toss the balls at us had perfect aim. there wee times that we woudl have strawberries on our backs. At the tiem the college had a terrible pool so we practiced at the county Y. I was the only guy who lived in dorms (a school i Indiana where most students are Greek), so I had to walk back by myself. One time I had a red mark on my back. My roommate thought I had been beaten up.
