diet and exercise

Im a fairly new masters swimmer. Currently in long course season with Fort Worth Area Swim Team in Texas. Age 47
Swim 3 to 4 nights a week currently 2500 meters swimming and kicking. Im not overweight and have slimmed down a lot in last 4 months since starting. 6ft 3in ...188 lbs ..34in waist...Been eating very healthy...lean meats...salads...very balanced....there is so much info out there for people looking to lose weight...low fat..low carb...blah blah blah...but very little for athletes in training...specially older athletes....im doing well with what i presently eat and workouts are improving....just wondering if anyone has any input on any articles...books...or websites with info on this....thanks

There was a book in the early '80s, called "Eat to Win" by Haas. Considering how long ago it was written, the information holds up pretty well. I also like how he went to biochemistry to give him the right background, and to controlled studies to back up his claims.

One interesting point he makes is that getting healthy will usually cause you to lose weight, the reverse may not be true. He mentioned that before he did his research, despite being athletic and fit, his doctor told him he was at risk of heart attack due to his high blood cholesterol level. (Too many steak & egg breakfasts, before he changed his diet.)

Johns Hopkins University http://www.jhu.edu/ has a lot of good information on diet and performance. Another area within their purview is http://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/ . You'll find all kinds of good stuff if you're willing to seek it out. Happy surfing!

Try a book call power eating. This is a great book for athletes trying to gain muscle. Just go to amazon and type in power eating.
