Lightbulb Adding Events to Nationals

Greetings-

Has there been any thought to adding other relay events to the format? (i.e. 400 Free, 400 Medley, 800 Free) They are offered at the local level, why not the National level?

Also, if people want to control the size of Nationals, then could you add the relays as swims? That is what the do at the High School, College, YMCA & USS levels and Olympic levels?

Just some thoughts on the subject.

Thank you,

I don't know if adding relays has been actively discussed.

One factor that seems to be prohibitive to adding relays is cost. There is currently an active discussion within the Northwest Zone to eliminate the 800 relays from the upcoming Zone LC Championship because the meet is being held at a facility where the rent is $300/hr. Having only one heat of an 800m relay could cost $65 and both of the two larger LMSCs in the zone don't want to pay that.

I would imagine that the costs at a nationals would be similar.

Uh CJ

How long do you want the meet to last? An 800?

The smallest number of heats at the last nationals was 13 - the Womens 200 Free Relay. If we got 8 heats, that would be about 1 1/2 hrs (2 heats @ 15 min and 6 at 10 min).

It is a nice idea, but it would extend the time line too long for a four day meet. A five day scy/scm meet could posably handle it. I doubt you could have it at long course even on a five day meet. too much time

Since the title is "Adding Events" and not "Adding Relay Events" , what about considering adding an 800 I.M.? And, yes, that is as an individual event, not a relay.

Adding RELAY events

Hi Michael,

I do agree with what you are saying. How about this thought. Maybe relays could be part of the events that count as swims. Like in high school meets you can swim 2 individuals or 2 relays, or the Olympics where you could swim 4 individuals and three relays. So instead of swimming 6 individuals, you could swim your NQT’s events then your relays. It would make the scoring at Nationals interesting.

Thanks,

First any LMSC can propose changes to the rules. A change to championships would be a rules year change (next year). OHIO LMSC could propose the change.

But as long as we are dreaming here. How about if EVERY member of the relay had to have made the NQT during the past two years. That would limit the number of entries and would make it interesting for the spectators. (if you really wanted to make it interesting, to count for points, every swimmer would have to swim NQT or faster or the score does not count. (hmm that might make it too difficult to figure out). or the relay would have to swim 4 times the NQT for that age group or the score would not count ( if the NQT for 45-49 was 2:15.00, the 45+ team would have to swim 9:00.00 or faster or the score does not count).

Additional Relay Events

Hi Michael,

I would like to see the events added. I think it would be fun and provide other opportunities to swim. As far as relays having NQT's, that might be feasible, but not the members. The idea would be that they would but you could have one super fast guy/gal that could counter balance a slower swimmer.

I still think by having relays count as events swum is a better way to keep the size of Nationals in check. Plus it would make it interesting to the spectators.

Thanks,
