getting to and from NYC

The family is coming to the Nationals with me. We want to travel to New York City and back while we are there. We will have a car but don't want to drive in. How easy is it to get transporation into the city from Piscataway ? How long does it take? What is the best way to go? Train? Bus? Any suggested web sites? Any special deals we should know about? Multiple-day passes? Any safety considerations to ponder? Anything else you can think of that would be helpful would be appreciated. Thanks.

NJTransit runs trains from New Brunswick (the next town and the station serving Piscataway) to Penn Station, in Midtown Mamhattan. The trains run hourly on weekends and more frequently, depending on time of day, during the week. It's very pleasant 45 minute ride. The schedules are on www.njtransit.com

The last time I took it the round trip fare was about $14.

I have an opposite situation. My family wants to stay in Midtown manhattan and I want to commute to the meet. Is that possible? Will it work at all?

It's possible; I've done it many times for other meets (with later starts). If you're taking the train you'd have to be at Penn Station at around 5 AM (which I believe is the earliest departure), to make the warmup. You'll need a cab to the pool, but there are plenty at the New Brunswick station. The entire trip from Penn Station to the pool takes about an hour, so you'd get there around 6 - 6:15. If you drive to Rutgers from Midtown you'd have to use the Lincoln or Holland Tunnels, which are always congested (24/7), to cross the Hudson River; also about an hour.

For what it's worth, I live in Manhattan, but I'll be staying at a hotel in Piscataway because of the early start times.
