Ray Taft (1920?-2002)

I just received a message from Nancy Ridout that Ray Taft passed away. Ray was one of the first members of United States Masters Swimming.

Ray was awarded the Ransom Arthur in the late 1970's He was also elected to the International Swimming Hall of Fame.

Ray suffered an anurism a few weeks ago, was unconscious for a couple of weeks, then came out of it. He was moved to an extended care facility. A few days ago he was moved back into the hospital suffering from pneumonia.

He is survived by his wife Zada and children.

You could always tell when Ray aged up because the records in the new age group would fall.

Ray has many many friend in Pacific Masters and The San Mateo Master Marlins, where he was a member. Ray will be missed by all.

To Friends of Ray Taft,

There will be a Memorial Service for Ray at Joinville Pool, Saturday, August 3rd, at 5:30pm. All friends and admirers of Ray are invited.

Check out the San Mateo Master Marlins club site for directions or call me at 415-892-0771 or email at registrar@pacificmasters.org/.

Ray was instrumental in the development of our program in northern California and formed the first team in Pacific Masters, the San Mateo Master Marlins. We all know what a great athlete Ray was and many of his records will remain in the books for a very long time. Even more than a great athlete, Ray was a role model for all of us. His graciousness and friendly comments always lifted ones spirits.

Please join with the Marlins and Ray's family if you can.
