I'd groan if given the set 6 x 400 free, descend 1-6, let alone 24x400!

Re: Michael Phelps Workout

The nuttiest set I've ever heard of was 30x1000, done by Erik Vendt. I don't remember the specifics (stroke, intervals, or whether it was descend 1-5, maintain 6-10, etc.) but after the set was over, Vendt put his head down on the side of the pool and fell asleep.

And here's the gossip:

"By then, Michael’s home life had changed drastically. After years of fighting, his parents divorced. High school sweethearts, they had separated before Michael was born, gotten back together, and then split for good in 1992. The kids went to live with Debbie. Michael grew very close to his mother, while Fred faded from the picture. To this day, he has very little contact with his father."

And here's a 42 minute video clip link that Richard S. posted on the total immersion forum, possibly from 2001. Great dolphin drills, superhuman stamina:

Re: Michael Phelps Workout

Maybe if we do these Olympic swimmer's workouts we will start winning gold medals!

I wish...

Re: Michael Phelps Workout

Some where on this thread are several of his workoouts. I don't remember where but I remember looking at them. Thye were all real hard. also I've seen Hansens's workouts. they are very hard also. I think his were on a fansite that had his name and then a nickname.

Re: Michael Phelps Workout

Phelps is in the news again, and his Phelps' swimming workouts for Beijing 2008 have been published in the press. Not a lot of info, mostly just saying how he trains 6 days per week for 6 hours, has 2 massages a day and eat 12,000 calories to provide the energy he needs!

He also produces only one third of the lactic acid that the average swimmer does
I wonder whether that is purely a result of his training or whether it has a genetic component.

Re: Michael Phelps Workout

I got the impression from the article that it is a genetic thing. If diet, then surely all competitors would eat the same way. Need to look for a better source of info. but sounds like a genetic advantage - like the giant feet, double jointed knees, and long arms!

Who's to say they don't all eat that way. And size 14 is hardly a giant foot, Ian Thorpe has size 17's or 18's depending on where you here it.

I can wear a size 14 in some shoes. What about Brendan Hansen's hands.

I am going to have to try this. Of course, I will have to convert the times to yards and increase the pace times.

Re: Michael Phelps Workout

It is definitely easier to be motivated while working out with a team. Though that is the case, the hardest would be to training along. That is difference between a good swimmer and a great swimmer. External motivation is good, internal motivation is the gold. If swim is important in you life, then the internal motivation would not be as hard to come by...

and a GREAT team at that. He trains with quite a bit of other swimmers that are at the top of their events as well. It is alot easier to train the way he does when you have others around you pushing just as hard, hurting just as much and you are able to compete in training with them day in and day out. That is HUGE.

Having trained with several Olympians in my day I always swam my best when training with those guys and gals.

Our "slow" group was working out next to Club Wolverine. I grabbed their workout after they left. This is the only one I saved.
