Emphasis will be placed on perfect posture in the water. Speed in these long axis strokes is greatly dependent upon the fundamentals of body position. Coaches will work individually with swimmers to achieve correct technique while indicating common errors.

Ability Level: Participants should be proficient enough to tolerate repeated drills in 25-yard swims. The clinic will focus mostly on technique.

Equipment Needed: Suit, Towel & Goggles. Hair longer than shoulder-length must be capped.

Coach Cost: Free for USMS/USA Swimming Coaches; $27 for non-member coaches
Swimmer Cost: $75 / person and includes a USMS Membership.
$50 / person for USMS Members

About the Lead Coach: Chris Colburn is the head coach of Academy Bullets Masters in Aurora, Illinois, the President of the Illinois Masters Swimming Association (ILMSA), and the Chair of the U.S. Masters Swimming Coaches Committee. Chris has almost 20 years of experience working with swimmers of all ages and ability levels. He has been published in USMS SWIMMER and Swimming World magazines on a number of topics related to adult swimming. In 2009, Chris earned the Kerry O'Brien USMS Coaching Award, the Dorothy Donnelly USMS Service Award, and the 2009 ILMSA Coach of the Year Award.

Topics/Schedule for the Coaches' Clinic:
9-9:45am: U.S. Masters Swimming: The Vision, Benefits of Membership & Coaching
10 minute break
9:55-10:40am: Coaching Masters Swimmers: Whats the big deal?
10 minute break
10:50-11:30am: Coaching a Long Axis Clinic: Issues, Solutions, and Preparation for Afternoon Session / What were doing with the swimmers today.

Lunch Break: 11:30-1pm

Schedule for the Swimmers' Clinic:
1-1:50pm: Introduction to topics for the clinic:
I. Fundamentals of Freestyle: stroke, drills, and tips
II. Fundamentals of Backstroke: stroke, more drills, and even more tips
III. Putting it all together: Racing and Training Applications
2-3:45pm: in-water time/practice with clinic topics
3:45-4pm: questions and follow-up
