Men's Results Last week I raced in the 2015 SPMS and Southwest Zone Summer Championships LCM Mission Viejo, CA I trained pretty well this summer then got sick with a cough and cold on Tue Aug 4th. I started feeling a little better around Tue Aug 11 but kept coughing and am still coughing today on Thu Aug 20. Here's how my training went after I got sick. X = did not swim Tue 4 swam Wed 5 X missed work Thu 6 X missed work Fri 7 (swam a little) worked for 1hr then went home Sat 8 X Sun 9 X Mon 10 X Tue 11 swam around 1000 Wed 12 swam around 1500 Thu 13 X Fri 14 X Sat 15 meet Sun 16 meet I thought about cancelling but since we arranged all the travel, I went ahead. I decided to skip the 400 IM on Fri and the 100 bk on Sat. On a whim, I asked if I could deck enter the 800 & they let me. All things considered I guess I swam OK. Southern Masters SCM Swimming Championships, UNO Pool - Dec 6 - 7, 2014 New Orleans was fun I swam slow in the meet, it was small and the sessions went by too quickly. It was a well run meet, they served lunch on Sat and the people were super nice. Sat, I arrived late on & didn’t warm up at all for my 50 fly, went 28.2 comparison 50 LCM fl 2013 27.0 in the & 27.5 this past summer Cruised the 1 bk in a 1:06, 32.72 1:06.74 2 years ago I went 1:00.4 50 free was the very next event and I only went 26.4 think I was 25.4 last year Sun: In my 50 bk I discovered the bk flags were set at 5 meters at the starting end and 5 yards at the turn end. When I turned over at the 25 in my 50, the wall was too close and I barely had room to flip. I felt like I lost speed & momentum. Still went 29.5 was 29.1 last year & 27.8 the year before that cruised my 200 IM 31.88 38.94 1:10.82 41.58 1:52.40 32.40 2:24.80 I should have gone to California & raced at the SPMA SCM Meet. I'm frustrated & disappointed, yet inspired to be much better at SC nats. I need to be much stronger and do more short fast timed swims in practice.
Wed June 25th, 2014 5K Postal 6:00 to 7:30 Swim Center LCM Trained Mon but not Tue dove in at 6:05 with no warm up the group started at 6:00 had a little controversy about whether I had a lane or not The coach had us make lane reservations so I made one with her. One woman made reservations, then canceled and gave hers to another swimmer but she also told the coach she cancelled and the coach gave her slot to another swimmer. I walked in seconds before the group dove in and nearly didn't have a lane. Which would have sucked because my wife came with me 40 miles from Martindale. 0100 0:01:13.9 0200 0:02:33.5 1:19.6 0400 0:05:16.2 0500 0:06:36.8 0800 0:10:35.7 5:19.50 1000 0:13:14.7 1200 0:15:52.5 5:16.8 1500 0:19:49.8 1600 0:21:08.7 5:16.2 2000 0:26:23.7 5:15.0 2400 0:31:40.7 5:17.0 2500 0:33:01.3 2800 0:36:54.8 5:14.1 3000 0:39:31.8 19:42.0 3200 0:42:09.1 5:14.3 3500 0:46:05.9 3600 0:47:25.3 5:16.2 4000 0:52:41.7 5:16.4 4400 0:57:57.7 5:16.0 4500 0:59:16.7 1:19.0 19:44.90 4600 1:00:35.1 1:18.4 4700 1:01:50.7 1:15.6 4800 1:03:08.8 1:18.1 5:11.1 4900 1:04:26.8 1:18.0 5000 1:05:44.2 1:17.4 5:09.1 (last 400) 19:21.70 (last 1500) I just swam the whole thing, long steady and slightly uncomfortable. Think my best time ever as a masters or recent years in a jammer was 63 min something on my way to the 10K. Today was a pretty good effort and I'm certain I can go faster, I never turned on my kick. for a while I was doing a single DK off each turn. Maybe I'll take another whack.

Noel Strauss still holds the 13-14 boys National Record in the 100 FR that he did back in 1987. He only went 25.1 in his 100 FR so, 23.8 is much better. Later that night we had a nice team gathering near Dana Point.

This all stems from the issue of training indoors, racing this meet outdoors, & being very near sighted To swim straight & away from the rope, I need to sight my outdoor races differently. Think i need to Hold my head higher & fixate on a point behind my lane. Clear blue sky ain't got no lines I was 29.5 at pan Ams in June then did a sprint strength program from around July 10th to now & got much stronger, so I hoped & expected to better that 29.5 :05.50 1:59.43

MEET: Saturday, July 9th, 2013 going into this meet I entered the 2br, 50fl, 50fr, 50br & 400IM David Guthrie convinced me it wasn't a good idea to race the 2br before the 4IM so I dropped it. Then I thought about swimming the 1bk and going for a 50 time, but the blocks didn't offer much space between the hand grips & the wall so I scratched that idea. Had a nice talk with Neil Walker who is the aquatic director and coach. He told me about a better backstroke turn, I practiced it a bit in warm up then did it in the meet. It feels faster. wore a FS3 50 FL went 27.6 cruised it but wasn't happy with it so I went in the lockerroom and shaved my head also skipped my other events to rest up for the 4 IM 400 IM went 5:07.18 felt my goggle strap slip down on my dive cruised the Fly 31.9, 37.9 cruised the back a bit too much 1:21?? worked the BR split 42, 43 2 beat kicked the 1st 50 free, split 36 low not sure what my last 50 was It didn't hurt as bad as my 4 IM at pan ams 31.99 37.67 1:09.66 41.27 1:50.93 41.30 2:32.23 42.58 3:14.81 43.48 3:58.29 36.18 4:34.47 32.71 5:07.18

Fri Apr 5th Zones Day 1 RESULTS Event 1 Men 45-49 400 Yard IM I Did not know the heats were mixed & seated fastest to slowest. I thought I had 30 min before my race then suddenly found out I had 4 minutes to get my new suit on & show up at the blocks. I was in lane 5, David Alley was in lane 4 & went out in 5:11 at the 500, Dick Worrell was in lane 6, I was ahead of him at first then passed me & never caught him. I thought about sprinting the last 150 or 100 or 50 but didn't.pretty sure I coulda gone much faster in either if I just picked one race. It was a dumb double & a hard way to begin a 3 day meet.

Monday Dec 31st, 2012 400 KICK for Time Tomorrow I will be a FINA 50! Lately I've been preparing for the 400 Kick for Time I showed up yesterday for Sunday practice and the pool was set up LCM, and the 400 Kick for time is SCY, so it was a no go. Showed up today for 5:30 am to 7:00 practice & the pool was still LCM, did most of the practice, then got out 15 minutes early, put on a B70 jammer & gave the 400 another shot, my 1st 2 tries were 5:32 & 5:24, today I went 5:08.11 050 33 0:33 100 37 1:10 150 39 1:49 200 39 2:28 1:18 250 40 3:08 300 40 3:48 1:20 350 40 4:28 400 40 5:08.11 1:20 2:40 went out a bit too hard but it didn't feel like it at the time stuck with the NO STROKE RULE which I really wanted to break but didn't wore a jammer Recently Renewed my 2013 USMS membership http://www.usms.org/reg/ http://www.usms.org/reg/content/benefits Don't have a team? Sat Aug 20th, 2011 Just swam a Postal 10k I felt I was in pretty good shape this summer with all the doubles I've done. Larry and a few of the swimmers on Longhorn wanted to do the postal 5k's & 10ks. So a while back I looked at the distance records The NR for M45-49 was 10K Postal James Stewart 2004 2:13:47.24 so I did the math, that time is averaging 1:20.27 per 100. I thought I might be able to go faster. So a few weeks ago I decided to give it a shot. I picked up my training, did several doubles then rested Th & Fr. I shaved & even shaved my head, plus asked the swim center to drop to pool temp a few degrees. they usually keep it around 80 and think it was 76 or 77 on Sat. Today I went 2:13:43.48! & barely broke the NR in my age group. there's a pic of my split sheet in my FB photo album called "swimming" My Splits Were: 00100 0:01:13.4 00400 0:05:08.0 00800 0:10:16.1 01000 0:12.48.2 01500 0:19:09.9 01600 0:20:25.8 10:09.7 02000 0:25:28.1 12:39.9 02400 0:30:31.1 10:05.3 03000 0:38:05.0 12:39.2 18:55.1 03200 0:40:35.0 10:03.9 04000 0:50:45.9 12:40.9 10:10.9 04500 0:57:10.3 19:05.3 04800 1:01:00.1 10:14.2 05000 1:03:36.4 12:50.5 05100 1:04:54.5 05600 1:12:02.4 11:02.3 06000 1:17:21.0 13:44.6 20:10.70 06400 1:22.49.8 10:47.4 07000 1:30:57.2 13:36.2 07200 1:33:37.5 10:47.7 07500 1:37:34.5 20:13.5 08000 1:44:53.3 13:56.1 11:15.8 08800 1:56:07.0 11:13.7 09000 1:59:01.0 14:07.7 21:26.5 09600 2:07.58.8 11:51.8 10000 2:13:43.48 14:42.4 Splits by 800, 1000, & 1500: 800 10:16.1 10:09.7 10:05.3 10:03.9 10:10.9 10:14.2 11:02.3 10:47.4 10:47.7 11:15.8 11:13.7 11:51.8 1000 12.48.2 12:39.9 12:39.2 12:40.9 12:50.5 13:44.6 13:36.2 13:56.1 14:07.7 14:42.4 1500 19:09.9 18:55.1 19:05.3 20:10.7 20:13.5 21:26.5 I spent around 2 minutes & 30 seconds on breaks. I dove in at 7:00 am and swam long smooth and easy. I went 5100 before taking my first break at around 65 minutes, in hind sight, I swam the 1st 5k too hard and waited to long before taking my first break to hydrade and fuel up. I rested around 30 seconds then took off attempting to do 400's on 5:20, think I made 2 or 3 then fell off the pace. I tried to stay steady and stay on pace but felt pretty certain I started off too strong. I started struggling around 7k, Thinking, I swam a really good 5k, why not get out and be done? Around 9k I started getting calf cramps. That last 1k really hurt and my last 100 was horrible. I kept my eye on the clock the whole way, knew I was close, and sloppily sprinted my last 25 touching the wall in 2 hours 13 minutes & 43 seconds, just under the record. When I finished I was truly exhausted. I hugged the wall for around 5 minutes. Swam an easy 100. hugged the wall longer. Swam another easy 100. Around 15 minutes later I crawled out of the pool, feeling exhausted and sore. My calves kept cramping, I could barely walk. So I sat down. Ed brought me a my vitamin water and a gu, Whitney gave me a powdered drink. I felt so terrible and for a while thought I needed to go the the hospital but after 45 minutes felt a little better. I needed to get home, we were driving my daughter to to Lubbock. I thought I'd get home by 10 but really underestimated how awful I'd feel after the swim. I felt terrible, was exhausted, sweating & shaking, my calves and biceps started cramping at 9k and were still cramping hrs later. My calves hurt Saturday, Sunday & Monday. I forgot to shave my face before the swim and my stubble tore up the skin on my right delt. I had blister on base on my left index finger where my thumb kept hitting it. My left bicep had a rub spot from streamlining against my stubbly head. I was thrilled to break the 10k record, especially since I also broke a 50 free record in Mens 45 - 49. I'm not a D man. The 10k was a crazy diversion for me, a personal challenge, and at this point, I am done with D and back to training for 50s to 400s. Looking back, I'd: 1) shave my face just before the swim, 2) start out at an easier pace 3) take my first break sooner & then follow a preplanned schedule, like: Maybe at 2.5, 3, or 4k then every 1k after that and 4) figure out what the ideal liquids and fuel are. 10k is a loooooong way and I doubt I'll do another one anytime soon.
