    this was my longest solo swim in a long time (I did 4600 yards about a month ago), and longest swim since the 5k o/w in August.

    sad to say, I've fallen behind on my FLOG pace (I always try to get 500 miles/year) due to travel and such, so I wanted to kickstart myself back into shape. one day won't do it alone, but 5000 yards sure made a big difference. hopefully I can keep this up for the next ~2 weeks, as I'm certain I'll miss when we move in 2 weeks.

    was surprised to see another Mesa swimmer there. I guess Kino is closed for annual maintenance, and she didn't want to drive too far. we swam in lanes next to each other, but did different things. I had this set in my mind and didn't really want to deviate. but we both got there right as the pool opened (5:30am), and both got out just before 7am.
    well I guess I'm no longer a Mesa swimmer. I got annoyed at all the emails to register for USMS, so I the South Texas LMSC (with my new address), and with Nitro for a team. I figure if I end up elsewhere I could always get that switched. Nitro has a rather convincing swimmer on the USMS forums who's been trying to get me on their team

    if anyone in the PHX area wants to swim....Hamilton is open tomorrow morning (yes on Thanksgiving), 5:30-7:30am. admission is just any non-perishable food donation (the lifeguards said if it is perishable they'll probably eat it!) I'll probably go.

    this was my first swim since Mon 11/9.
    life has been a whirlwind since then... a daytrip to Austin to close on the new house.
    then an insane trip that began the next day, going to Johannesburg, South Africa (with a day in London on the way). I got back on Monday. my hotel did have a pool, and I thought of swimming, but other than the first day (when I felt mostly hung over), I really didn't have time. drove out to a national park to see all sorts of wildlife. also got to the Apartheid Museum and Constitution Hill (a former prison).
    I posted tons of pictures to Facebook; shoot me a PM if you'd like to see.

    so anyway, the whole warm-up just felt strange. I can't remember the last time I had been out of the water for that long. took that and at least the next set to somewhat get a feel for the water.
    (on the other hand, after 2-3 days out of the water, my hair did feel rather soft and less sticky )

    air temps were a bit chilly today, around 35F, and we had just 8 swimmers. most of us had our own lanes (there's 2 who always share, for some reason).
    there was a fast guy beside me (he did the last 100s at 1:15), but on the other side (and for a few lanes) I had people to stick with for much of the set.

    on the last set, he had said to start at 1:30, and if you missed the interval to add fins. my legs and feet were on the verge of cramping, so I opted to just add 5 sec, and was perfectly fine.
    although it is kind of sad to hold that interval...when I think to what I was doing when I was in better shape. But then again, given what my body has been through, all those hours sitting on planes (my butt was so sore on one that I got up and hung out with the flight attendants in the back for a bit), I shouldn't complain too much.

    I always enjoy going to Hamilton pool, especially after not going for a while. and most especially when it isn't that busy
    I seemed to arrive right as the early shift of swimmers was leaving. one guy got out just as I walked in, so I took his lane. then it seemed fairly constant for the next ~15 min that almost everyone left. guess that's what happens when I arrive at 6:20, and they opened at 5:30.

    anyway, the water felt great, with the air temp in the 50s, I got plenty of fresh air for my, "faster," swims. that's one thing I hate about the gym pool...indoors, with that stale nasty air laced with chlorine (and who knows what else).

    certainly didn't break any records for the, "fast," swims, but got my 100 down to 1:15 (was about 1:30 on the first, with 5 off when I added another length fast)
    my, "fast," 50 was about :35.

    saw an amazing sunrise while I was swimming (another thing I love about swimming here). I debated between wearing clear or mirrored goggles, went with mirrored, and it worked well.

    I've been mostly swimming at Skyline for the past few weeks. it is just a hair further from home, but it is 98% freeway driving, so it takes similar or even less time to get there.
    the pool is identical to Kino, well I think it is flipped or something.
    much smaller group, which means that I normally either have my own lane or share with 1 person (today I had my own lane).
    there are still people of all abilities there... I had 2-3 others who kept me on my toes today. there's usually an older fellow there (I think he's 68) who is just a bit faster than me who makes a great workout (he wasn't there today though).
    and of course who can complain with Laura on deck coaching?? After knowing her for 15+ years, I have yet to see her in a bad mood (or she hides it very well).

    anyway, it was a good swim today. that set of 25s got my heart racing though, I really needed those 300s to bring my HR down after. I was ready to take it up a notch again at the end with fins and paddles.

    there's one guy who seems to show up at the gym pool about the same time as I do, and we race to get the same lane
    today I had swum about 400 when I saw him walk in the pool area. it seems as though he does a long, slow, continuous swim (but I've never chatted, or looked closely).
    when I swim 50s on 1:00 or 1:10 I'll be a similar pace

    anyway, I wanted to go to Hamilton this morning, but had an 8am call. the gym is closer, and I knew I could get in this workout and still be ok on time (this after walking the dog 5 miles).

    my times didn't get quite as fast today, not sure why. I'm always in the upper 30s for the first round, then drop about 2-3 sec by round (the last is similar to the one before though).

    otherwise, things are busy with work, with packing (tackled the garage last weekend ), the new house is pretty much done, and we close 2 weeks from today. we'll move in early Dec (still figuring out specifics). we're working on getting appliances now, along with Internet, eventually the other utilities.
    I finally nailed down an office to work from. the nice thing is that I'm on a virtual team with a very large company, don't have anyone with me here, nor there, so I could pretty much work from any of our locations. I had been counting on a place in Round Rock, but that fell through. I found something else in Georgetown--at least my commute will be opposite most others. (certainly beats driving to/fr downtown Austin during rush hour)
    swimming-wise, I'm trying to get in when I can now, and I expect my maintenance mode will continue through the holidays. after we're in Texas, I might try a few places, see how far they are from home/work. hopefully in January I can return to somewhat normal, regular swimming (and life). just want all this packing (more trash/donating) to be done with.

    water temp was almost perfect. could have been just a touch cooler, but given how warm it was in the summer, it was a world of difference better.
    it was pretty busy too. I did manage to have my own lane the whole time I was there. I think putting my gear out on deck scares some people away. well maybe doing some fly does too (I know I avoid jumping in with people doing fly).

    this set worked out very well for me today. I just wasn't in the mood for another of the Thorpedo sets, kinda burnt out doing it so many times.
    I liked the 75 easy/25 fast, and should have done some breast. I did try a back start on the first, but I never really learned how to do one correctly, so I flubbered, and just did the 2nd from a normal push.

    I got there late, didn't get in the water until 6:35. lap swim finishes at 7:30, and some of the swim team swimmers were already in while I warmed down (well at least one in the lane beside me). I think I was the last lap swimmer out of the water.
    there was just 1 empty lane when I got there, 2nd over from the diving well, so I snagged that. wasn't too bad, except a little further away from the clock. I prefer to be 2-3 lanes over from the other side (I hate wall lanes).

    anyway, the lifeguard told me that the water had cooled off so much that they needed to turn on the heater (in addition to lap swimming, HS swim team, they also do all sorts of lessons and kids groups). water temp was just a hair warmer than I'd like. that is one great thing Kino has going for it...for 7-8 months of the year the water is kept at 78F, which I think is about perfect.

    it felt really nice to just stretch things out.
    I can't remember kicking that much for a while... that's quite a bit for me!

    had a pretty busy morning, walked the dog (about 5 miles), swam, then went right to the VA clinic for lab work, then back home to work for the day.

    our new house is progressing nicely. it should be done by the end of the month. we're scheduled to close on 11/10, and then we'll move the first weekend in December. we had been thinking of doing the drive over 2 days, but with the dog and cats (knowing that we probably wouldn't get much sleep in a hotel), we may just cut to the chase and do it in 1 day and get it over with (would be a LONG day, as Google maps predicts ~14 hours).

    I normally do something sprinty on Tuesdays, but since today is my birthday, I thought I'd do 100 x my new age. used to do this quite my 20s/30s it really wasn't too difficult. but it does get a bit more taxing as you get older.

    it sounded intimidating at first, especially doing this solo, but breaking it down, mostly in groups of 10, definitely helped, as did using some toys. then throwing in a little breast helped round things out.

    there were 2 others there when I arrived, so I swam in the open area, and another guy got in that area too. when I was starting the swim w/Agility paddles, the guy next to me (in my favorite lane) got out, so I moved over. by the time I got to the pull set, I was alone in the pool.

    hopefully I can keep this up for a while more. it just might take a bit longer

    thankfully the water has finally cooled off. the complainers didn't take long at all to begin, "its too cold." some said the temp was 75-76F, but my guess is closer to 78 or even 79. about perfect for actual swimming. yea it should feel a little chilly when you first get in.

    I did swim Friday, a somewhat sprinty set with Dan coaching. but I took off swimming over the weekend. pretty rare for me, but I wanted to focus on getting some packing (more like throwing away) done.

    the pool looked kind of busy when I first got there (around 6:15, lap swim starts at 5:30, finishes at 7:30), then all of a sudden several people got out of the pool. so I had my own lane for the whole swim.

    water temp hadn't changed since Tuesday, still a little on the warm side, but nothing like 1-2 months ago.

    when I'm swimming by myself, I like mixing up my warm-up. makes it much more interesting than just doing mindless freestyle. I'd do more like this at team workouts, but my backstroke and breaststroke are slow. actually I don't do non-free very often at team workouts, mostly only when specifically in the set, and I'm at the end of the lane (or maybe splitting).

    this was a good stretch-out swim. I used all of my toys except my breaststroke fins. ran out of time for those.

    evidently Paul is out of town (I think maybe the convention is going on?), and the people I swam with weren't too happy with Dan's set. on Wednesdays we usually get in 4000-4500 yards, and Dan's set was only 3000 or so.
    there was a distance option for the super fast; evidently someone asked him if we could do it and modify, but he said no (yet one of the distance lanes did just that).

    anyway, I went last (3rd) in the lane, and once I figured out that we were deviating from the set, I was fine.
    I had walked Holly (the dog) before heading out to swim, and my HR was higher than I'd like when I started swimming, so I tried not to push things and get it back down again. I was fine by the time we got into the 2 x 200s.

    water temp seems to have crept up a little... not much (if any) cooler than Hamilton was yesterday.

    with this entry, I swam 43.3 miles in September. got wet all but 7 days of the month. considering I was on vacation for almost 2 weeks, that's not bad (but I swam quite a bit while on vacation). and I'm about 5-6 miles ahead of my annual goal pace to get 500 miles

    still waking up early (woke up around 3:30), but at least today I just got up and walked Holly (the dog). we were out on the canal trail at 4:30. oddly, I did see a woman running on the other side shortly after we started (she really startled me).

    it is fall break here in Chandler (they do year-round, school started in late July, so they've already been going 2 months), and the pool was rather quiet. maybe 3-4 people in the water when I got there, some left/others came, but I had my own lane the whole time.
    the high school PE class that normally goes right after lap swim didn't happen...but there were quite a few kids who showed up, and they went to the side of the pool with the starting blocks. the lifeguards told me that was the high school swim team. since there's no school, they have 2 hour workouts early in the day.

    water felt ok. a little warmer than Kino (I'd say Kino was 80ish, Hamilton today maybe 82). I've done this set several times over the summer, but always at the gym pool. quite different to do it in a different environment, where there are actually others swimming.
    my times were around (for fast 50s):

    round 3 (breaststroke): 40-42

    I had thought of going off the blocks for the last 4, but by the time I got to that point, I felt like I barely had the energy to do a decent job just swimming them

    it always takes me a few days to readjust to the time at home when I go to Europe for a while. going there, we arrived around 8:30am, were at our hotel around 10am, and tried to just stay up as late as we could that first day (we made it until about 8pm). we felt like zombies most of the day. but then we were full adjusted after.
    coming back, we left there at 10:45am, arrived home around 7:30pm local time, and got to bed by 9. but I woke up around 3am Sunday morning.
    I went to bed around 8pm last night, and slept until 3:30am this morning. gradually getting there...

    anyway, the regular folks all wanted to hear about my trip, and of course I wore the suit I picked up at the shop at the Olympic pool. everyone loves to hear about the woman I shared the lane with who took off her top (even the women seemed surprised).

    they are still aerating the water at Kino, but it is a decent temperature. not nearly as cool as the Mediterranean near Barcelona though. I'd guess it was about 80F today.

    I swam with 2 gals and led the lane for nearly the entire set. for the pull set, they wanted to do a 1:40 interval, so I jumped in the next faster lane and just went last (as it was I still got 15 sec rest, so 1:40 would have been very relaxing for me).
    I'm much more used to swimming SCY, especially with 2 hard walls.

    I can't even remember the last time I've swum SCM. perhaps at a gym pool at some point. Kino is rarely setup SCM. since they had it setup for the meet yesterday, we got to enjoy an extra day of it today (and maybe tomorrow as well).

    I didn't realize the pool was SCM at first. I thought I was just being slow... normally I can do 50s kick @ 1:00 no problem, with a few seconds rest. but today the rest was quite minimal.
    other than that, I felt mostly ok. I was glad that I got wet a bit on my vacation. even without normal workouts, just getting in and swimming helps quite a bit, especially over a longer vacation.

    we had a decent sized group, I guess around 15 people. I split a lane with Laura until she got out on the 2nd round of that last set. asked her about the meet, she said they had about 100 people show up, which sounds like a great meet (I know many they have to extend registration and beg people to enter just to get 50 swimmers).

    water temperature was rather pleasant. I'd guess around 78-79 (not as cool as swimming in the Mediterranean, nor the BCN Olympic pool). not sure if they're still aerating. before we know it, they'll be turning on the heat.

    after we finished our final day of exploring, I went down to the beach for one final swim in the Mediterranean.

    I've seen signs along the beach with signs on what beach it is, but I kept forgetting to put them here...

    Closest to my hotel: Llevant
    Next over (swam there yesterday): La Nova Mar Bella
    3rd over: La Mar Bella
    and next over: Bogatell

    Each beach is about 400-600m long and they're separated by a rock jetty. Well after Llevant, there's a big space before the next beaches.

    So today:
    went to La Nova Mar Bella. Swam out, across, back, and did another length. Was debating if I wanted to do a 3rd lap, when I suddenly thought, "why not land, then go to the next beach?" so I landed, walked through sand around the jetty, then launched myself again into La Mar Bella.
    and yea I did notice a bunch of topless women, but didn't think anything of it...until I just noticed that is a nude beach. I only saw topless women, no full-on nudity (and I kept on my suit).
    I also saw what I think could have been jellyfish. kind of brown/red color, with things sticking out that reminded me of a porcupine. thankfully they were all 2-3 feet away, but it made me more vigilant. I've seen some fish here/there while swimming.
    the water was more clear today than after being all shaken up yesterday. not quite as clear as last weekend, but getting there.
    so anyway, I swam to the other side of Mar Bella, almost bumped into 2 guys who I don't know where they came from (no goggles), turned around, swam back, beached, and launched back into La Nova Mar Bella, across, then beached at my stuff. I briefly considered doing a lap of Llevante, but I resisted.

    after getting back to the hotel, I swung by the pool, and did an easy ~400m. this is really a great way to wind down after dealing with waves and such in the sea.

    we leave here tomorrow morning, flying back through PHL, getting back to PHX around 6pm. I'll miss out on the SCM meet my team is doing tomorrow morning (but truthfully I probably wouldn't have swum anyway). there is workout on Sunday morning, so maybe I'll get to that

    I will definitely miss Barcelona. along with all the swimming I've done (I swam 6 days), we've done a ton of exploring around town. the, "old town," area near the cathedral has so many little streets with many different shops, very interesting to just browse about. I've been getting 15-20,000 steps per day, along with the swimming.
    will almost be nice to get back to normal life.

    Wednesday 9/23.
    Swam with the Pantares Grogues Natacio (a local IGLA team here in Barcelona)
    Piscina Sant Jordi, a 50m pool

    the workout was a bit odd; we did a bit of swimming, then got out for pushups, squats, or other misc exercises. I'm guessing I got in about 2000m

    there was one point when the coach handed out paddles, and we did 8 x 50 pull @ 1:00, and I led the lane for that.

    I found this group through some random Google searches the day we arrived last week. I sent an email through their website, and forgot about it...until the coach replied yesterday with info. visitors can swim twice for free, but I have no idea how much additional workouts cost.
    if anyone else will visit Barcelona, shoot me a PM and I'll share what info I have.

    I do speak a little Spanish, and it was definitely put to the test, although I know very few swimming terms (a few other swimmers were kind enough to tell me what was going on).

    it was an interesting experience. as we finished, many people asked if I'd go back. their workouts begin at 8:30pm, which I guess isn't a big deal for Barcelona. but the next workout is Friday, and we fly back on Saturday morning, so I think I'll pass.

    Thursday 9/24

    there were kite surfers in the area where I've swum open water near my hotel, so I walked just past the jetty and swam in the next beach area. today was the last day of the Merce festival here, and a holiday, so no lifeguards working (although there seemed to be some in cars).
    anyway, when I swam on Sunday and chatted with the lifeguard on distance, he had said that this area was bigger than the other, I think he said 600m. I did 2 laps, so about 2400m.

    the sea was very very rough today. I went out nearly to the buoys. kind of freaked me out a little, but the water was a bit calmer out there. I was also out beyond the surfers, which was better than worrying about getting run over by one.
    after getting tossed around, chewed up, the sea eventually spit me out near where I left my stuff. it was far far easier going into the beach than swimming out from it.

    I rinsed off and saw one of the kite surfers. he learned how in Santa Cruz, and the other was his brother.
    as I walked up from the beach, I saw someone swimming in that first area (now overrun with surfers), towing a buoy (the o/w swimmers seem to do that here, and mostly ignore the lifeguard rules about going around the jetties).

    while I was heading upstairs in the elevator, for some reason I thought I'd check out the hotel pool. we looked at it on Saturday, but I hadn't been in it.
    no one else in the pool until just before I got out.
    my guess it was 20m, and not too horrible for lap swimming. after being tossed around so much in the Med just minutes before, it felt rather calm swimming in a pool
    I'm guessing I swam about 600 or so meters.

    as far as hotel pools go, it is pretty nice. however when you have the Med just a 5 min walk away... I'd rather go for o/w

  19. 09222015: another Olympic Pool swim

    I swam in the Med again on Sunday...actually a double, about 2500 or so early morning then another 1500 late in the day. water felt wonderful again, but my body takes a while to recover from dealing with all the waves and chop.

    after our exploring today, I went over to the Bernat Picornell swimming pool on Montjuic. I had visited this complex when I was here before, but only swam in the indoor pool. so I really wanted to get in the outside pool.

    after paying the fee--a crazy E12--and quckly changing, I jumped in the water. it felt both refreshing (my guess is 78F) and very calm (after swimming in the sea).
    here's what I did:

    1000 w/u

    12 x 100 @ 1:45, kind of descended

    5 x 100 breast @ 2:15

    2 rounds of:
    * 100 easy @ 2:00
    * 100 fast @ 2:00 (times were 1:24 and 1:28)

    300 w/d

    TTL: 3300m

    the sun was in/out, but I was fine with that after getting some sunburn on Sun/Mon.
    I shared a lane with one woman, I thought she was getting out when I got there, she was chatting with the lifeguard. we decided we'd circle, and off we went.

    at one point, I assumed that the woman got out and a guy got in, I saw someone swimming in what looked like a brief. only it was the same woman--evidently it is ok to swim without the top of a bikini. I didn't notice anyone else do this, but the other people swimming were either guys or ladies wearing a 1-piece.

    the pool really didn't get very crowded. it was just me and the topless woman, then she got out, and I had my own lane for a while, until a guy (a real guy) got in during my warm-down.
    then I was puzzled when I noticed that the locker room was crazy busy. so before I left, I took a peek at the inside pool, and noticed it was packed. that is setup 25m, and I'd much rather swim LCM outside. the outside pool is only open until I think 8pm, while the inside pool (was used for warm-ups during the Olympics) is open until midnight (M-F)

    I did take a picture when I finished, but it didn't come out so well...

    water is finally getting to a somewhat reasonable temperature. definitely felt warm after the 200s, but not nearly as bad as 2 weeks ago.

    shared the lane with just 1 other guy. I let him go first on the 200s to start; I went 10 sec back, threw in a 25 breast on each 200.
    then on the last 3 @ 2:40, I put on my fins + Catalyst paddles, led the lane, and turned things on. was shocked when I saw the time on my first, about 2:22, and kept a similar pace for the other 2.
