Comin' round the mountain 78.12 mi 04:20 18.1mph pace
Hadn't done a loop around South Mountain for at least 6 weeks, so thought I was due this morning. Weather started out pretty nice, after yesterday's rain. I headed through the Chandler Airport to QC, that turns into Maricopa Rd, then to Riggs. I knew the Landis group does this, and I saw a guy waiting for them at Riggs/Maricopa, so figured I'd try to get as far as I could before they passed me. It was about 6-7 miles when they passed me, and it was as if I was standing still. Initially I thought I'd try to ride with them, I held 24-25 mph for a mile or 2, but they still disappeared off in the distance. And that might have been a mistake, I really fried my legs trying to do that. When I finally hit South Mountain Park, I headed to the Summit. But by the time I reached the saddle (about halfway up), I was already using my easy gears...and figured going to the top would be far from fun. So I stopped at a lookout for a minute, then headed down. As I was approaching the big turn, I suddenly thought I'd give San Juan a try, and that was much more my speed today. Went all the way to the end, took another quick break, then back. Some guys from my bike shop told me to try Guadalupe to Price on the way back so I did...Guadalupe had a bit of construction in the bike lane, and the Price frontage road has absolutely no shade. So I think I'll go back to 48th St to Chandler Blvd next time (48th St has tons of shade, and Chandler Blvd isn't bad for biking). I filled up my bottles twice, and still almost ran out by the time I got home. Jumped in the pool--that felt fantastic!
I hate it when you get a song stuck in your head... Today it was, "She'll be comin round the mountain." (at least it was appropriate for what I was doing)
