I've struggled with it before, especially the 40s, but today I felt pretty good. I made both intervals, held 36. but I don't think I could have pushed to 35 I tried out my community pool last night. the water isn't heated, but with air temps getting near 90 during the day (I think still down to 60-65 at night), the water felt quite pleasant. I just did a casual 700 yards. it is just a 5 min walk from home, a nice 25 yard pool (5 lanes), but not ropes. I'll be traveling out of town tomorrow back Monday and probably won't get to swim, so I've been trying to keep my FLOG ahead of schedule. I'm sure I'll still fall down the rankings in my age group (I've worked up near 10).
Monday AM solo swim @ Sendero Springs 700 w/u 500, done 100 moderate/25 fast (x4) 500, done 100 moderate/25 breast (x4) 200 kick Two rounds (w/fins): * 2 x 125, 25 drill/25 swim/25 back/25 swim/25 drill * 25 easy * 25 fast fly 100 easy 8 x 100 @ 1:35, 75 free/25 breast 8 x 125 @ 1:50, pull w/Agility paddles + buoy 8 x 100 @ 1:30 25 easy free 25 fast fly 25 easy free 25 fast back 200 w/d TTL: 5500 yards, in 88 min Butterfly: 75 yd Backstroke: 125 yd Breaststroke: 350 yd Freestyle: 4750 yd Kick: 200 yd I felt really good in the water this morning, felt like I could keep going. the water was a little chilly when I first got in and it took me about 300 before I felt warmed up. maybe with the daytime high temps getting warm (mid/upper 80s) they could have cut the heater. I can't remember the last time that I've done any fly without fins. I've been on a quest to do at least 50 of all strokes during a real workout (not a gym warm-down). I was glad I saved the finless fly and back for the end. years ago I told myself that someday I'd like to do a 400 IM at a meet; still a lofty goal, but I still want to do it (I certainly wouldn't break any records, but want to just legally finish). I needed a good set like this after a rather lackluster swim at the gym pool yesterday afternoon. I just wasn't into it, ended up doing a 2000 straight swim, a little kicking, pulling, warmdown, then got out. it is rare that I don't feel better after a workout than before, but I guess it does occasionally happen (well other than injury).
Sunday afternoon solo swim @ Sendero: 500 w/u 500 done 100 free/25 breast (4x) 15 x 100 @ 1:30 continue into 5 x 100 @ 1:25 200 kick 4 x 25 back @ :30 (w/fins) 4 x 150 pull @ 2:05 (buoy + Agility paddles) 200 w/d TTL: 4100 yards other than a kids party on the other side of the pool, had the whole thing to myself (and they got out after I did about 1000). sunny and about 70F, just a light breeze. going over to the pool I wasn't feeling too good, but thought I'd at least get in and stretch out. I've really been very consistent in my swimming in April. I've swum every day from April 2. my April total so far is 52,300 yards. I've swum 26,300 just since last Monday.
I swam on Saturday...total was 3700, but I can't remember all of the details. It was unusually chilly here...low 40s. I felt sorry for the lifeguards having to be out to watch me. but then another guy showed up, so I didn't feel quite as bad. a hot shower sure felt great after the walk of shame to the locker room after I got out of the water. totally different story today. after a chilly morning, temps were in the mid-60s, sun shining nicely, when I swam this: 500 w/u 5 x 100 pull (buoy) @ 1:30 5 x 200 @ 3:00, 4 x 125 @ 1:55 (100 free/25 breast) 200 kick, fins + board 4 x 25 back, fins 8 x 75 @ 1:15 (50 free/25 stroke), 2 breast/2 back 200 w/d. TTL: 3600 yards (about an hour) this made 7 days in a row for me, and 26,000 yards in that time. Tues/Thurs were just short/recovery swim at the end of gym sessions. there is still just a little swelling on my foot that had the ankle sprain, but all of the black & blue marks are gone. most of the pain is gone, I feel just a little on turns. I barely noticed when I did breast today.
did a mini-swim after my gym workout yesterday: 500 w/u 500 pull w/buoy 6 x 50 @ :50 200 w/d Friday AM swim @ Sendero Springs 500 w/u 500, done 100 moderate/25 fast 500 pull w/buoy, done 75 moderate/25 fast 500, done 100 moderate/25 breast 500 pull w/Agility paddles + buoy, done 100 moderate/25 fast 500, done 100 moderate/25 breast 10 x 100's: * odds: 75 moderate/25 fast * evens: 75 moderate/25 breast 500 pull w/Catalyst paddles + buoy, done 100 moderate/25 fast 200 kick, w/fins + board, alternate 25 dolphin/25 flutter 4 x 100 @ 1:30 200 w/d TTL: 5300 yards there were 4 of us swimming today, but the others started leaving, one after I did 1500 (he is swimming the 1650 in a meet tonight), another around 2500, then the last around 3500. so I had the whole pool to myself after that. kind of felt bad for the lifeguards having to sit around and watch me. anyway, my ankle is much better...still not 100%, but getting there. I did a little breast at the gym yesterday so thought I'd try some today. there is only an analog clock at this pool, and I can't see it for much of the workout since it is too dark. but after the sun rose I was able to see it enough for some pace 100s toward the end...I was wondering if I could do that toward the end of this, and it felt surprisingly good.
Monday AM solo swim @ Sendero Springs (25 yards) I decided to up my distance this week. I usually get in 3500-4000 yards, did 5000 on Monday and 5200 today. I'm still getting over an ankle sprain so pulled a bit of this: 500 w/u swim 500 pull w/buoy, 75 moderate/25 fast 500 pull w/buoy + Agility paddles, 100 moderate/25 fast 500 swim, 225 moderate/25 fast 500 pull w/buoy, 100 moderate/25 fast 2 x 500 pull w/buoy + Catalyst paddles, 100 moderate/25 fast 500 swim, 100 moderate/25 fast 500 pull w/buoy, 100 moderate/25 fast 500 swim, 100 moderate/25 fast 200 w/d (my watch got the last 500 and 200 mixed together) just enough time between 500s for a quick swig of water, and any equipment changes due to that ankle sprain, I didn't register for the Texas (or whatever USMS calls it) SCY zone meet this coming weekend. there's no way I can do block starts yet, and haven't done any breast...that always lags behind because of that whip kick. still mulling over some o/w swims for the year. there's some interesting ones out there, including one in NYC in Sep that I might do. I will probably swim the zone LCM meet in July; I reserved a hotel room at the same place I stayed last year. and I'll probably do the same events (1500, 400, 100 free, 100 breast, 50 back)
Monday AM solo swim @ Sendero Springs pool 800 w/u 4 x 50 kick w/fins + board, 25 dolphin/25 flutter 4 x 125 w/fins, 25 drill/25 swim/25 back/25 swim/25 drill main sets: 4 x 100 @ 5-10 sec rest, done as: * 75 free/25 breast * 50 free/25 breast/25 free * 25 free/25 breast/50 free * 25 breast/75 free 3 x 100 @ 5-10 sec rest, done as: * 50 free/50 breast * 25 free/50 breast/25 free * 50 breast/50 free 2 x 100 @ 5-10 sec rest, done as: * 25 free/75 breast * 75 breast/25 free 100 easy 100 breast for time 100 easy 4 x 75 @ 5 sec rest, swim w/Agility paddles 4 x 50 @ 5 sec rest: * odds 25 free/25 back * evens 25 free/25 breast 200 pull w/Catalyst paddles + buoy 200 w/d TTL: 3600 yards after a month or so of working out every day (not necessarily swimming but gym or something), other than a brisk walk yesterday morning I didn't do anything else. it felt really good, I slept much better last night, and woke refreshed this morning. I really need to do that every once in a while. that said, I logged over 45 miles of swimming Feb, which is the most I've had in a single month in at least a year, probably more. perhaps that's the reason I needed a nice day break. after a long warm-up this morning to dust off the cobwebs, I decided I wanted a nice breaststroke workout. this one was a good way to ease into it. the thought of doing a 100 breast off the top isn't very appealing, but after all of the rest it wasn't too bad. my time was 1:27, I guess not too bad considering how much breast I've swum lately. now I want to do a 200, probably next week. every week I'm trying to focus on 1-2 timed swims. on another swimming related, and positive note, I received an email from one of the administrators of the Speedo On app that I won a pair of Speedo Fastskin Elite goggles. it looks like they usually go for about $50. I was a staunch TYR Racetech wearer for many years, but they made getting the version I like very difficult (if not impossible), so I've been trying others. I'll probably want to try these, make sure they work, then save them for special occasions. I'm toying with the idea of swimming in the zone meet in a few weeks.

I hadn't thought of a set at all before jumping in the pool. usually I have some thoughts. anyway, I started the 100s thinking I'd either do 5 or 10, depending how I felt. around #7, I figured I'd go to 12. once I go that in my mind, I gradually descended those last 5, with the last around 1:17 I couldn't remember when I last did a 100 fast. They typically don't allow block starts at this pool. I've never asked, but occasionally there's a girl with her mother and a coach of some sort. once they got her up on the block and the lifeguards freaked out. I've never had a problem at other pools when I asked. I have done them at Sendero when we had a team there. anyway, pushing off of the wall with fins and paddles, I just felt like i was gliding on the water. my time was 1:04. when I swam with the Mesa group, Paul told me that your time with fins + paddles is usually a good indicator of what you'll do at a meet.
Wednesday AM solo swim @ Sendero Springs 900 w/u, with a bit of breast/back mixed in 6 x 50 kick @ 5-10 sec rest. w/fins + board. done as 25 dolphin/25 flutter 3 x 100 @ 5-10 sec rest, w/fins. done as 25 drill/25 swim/25 back/25 drill 2 x 100 @ 10 sec rest, gentle build 100 easy main set: timed 1650! wrap-up: 50 easy 50 done as 25 free/25 back 50 done as 25 free/25 breast 200 w/d TTL: 3800 yards I couldn't remember when I had last done a 1650, so figured it was time. It wasn't too horrible --time was 23:03 (works out to 1:23 per 100 pace) --stroke count averaged 38 per 100 (that's 38 for my watch-wearing arm, plus the other) --splits were all over the place. as slow as 1:28 and as fast as 1:18 --I was glad to do this in the outside pool. air temp was in the mid-40s; probably would have been even better if it was a little cooler. but definitely better than the indoor gym pool.
Monday AM solo swim @ gym pool 800 w/u 6 x 50 kick @ :55, 25 dolphin/25 flutter, w/fins + board 5 x 100, odds @ 1:30, evens @ 1:35. 25 drill/25 swim/25 drill/25 swim, w/fins main sets: 5 x 200 @ 3:00, hold 2:45 6 x 50 @ :55, odds: 25 breast/25 free. evens: 25 free/25 breast 5 x 100 @ 1:30, hold 1:20 or better 6 x 50 @ :50, desc 1-3, 4-6 200 w/d TTL: 3900 yards I didn't even try to swim at Sendero; air temp was about 30, and they're only supposed to be open if it is 40 or higher, so headed straight to the gym. For some reason, TX DOT decided to close the freeway entrance that I normally use; at the early hour the frontage road wasn't too bad. But when I was going back home, the folks going to work weren't so fortunate. I had the whole pool to myself for most of the workout. There was a guy kind of floating in the other lane for a bit, perhaps warming down from weights. After not swimming 200s before last week, that actually felt pretty good, and I felt like I could have done more. I thought up this set as I was driving there, and the combination worked out well for me. got my 200s down to about 2:40, 100s to 1:12, and 50s to 32. I can't remember the last time I've done some longer swims...so that may be up next. When I swam with the Mesa group, we usually had the option of a mile about every 4 to 6 weeks. I didn't always take that option though. I had pulled out my pulling gear and thought of swimming 3 200s then pulling 2. but I lifted yesterday (biceps and back). my arms were pretty sore and although I normally love pulling (ask anyone who has swum with me), I didn't want to abuse my arms too much. I upped my weights doing preacher curls, so was probably extra sore.

I don't normally like swimming long sets in the gym pool. it is just 2 lanes, shallow, warm, with typical gym pool air circulating. but figured it was better than nothing. and the pace clock was working today. this was one of my best swims in a while. for the 200s, I started at 2:48 and descended down to 2:40 for the 1:50s, my initial interval was 2:10 or 2:15, but I did the first in 1:50, so changed my mind. just tried to keep these strong for the 100s, again descended, 1:18, 1:15, 1:13 for the 50s...whatever I had left. did 32 and 31 Here's the swim overview from my Apple watch (it doesn't include kicking):

I did a slight descend toward the end. the 75's also felt pretty good. I always like swimming with paddles, makes me feel fast. held 55 for those. on a totally separate note, I was somehow able to use a bunch of frequent flyer miles to book a trip to Australia later this year...in a premium cabin. I've been there before, but it was ages ago, and on the cheap (stayed mostly at hostels). we're flying into Melbourne and out of Sydney. I think we'll also spend a few days up in Cairns...so we can see the Great Barrier Reef. I think I'll do the scuba certification so I can see the reef up close.

I didn't notice until I was in the pool area, in just my suit, or I would have gone to the front to ask. and of course I forgot to say anything when I left. I felt decent. my foot is recovering. my breast kick isn't quite as snappy as I'd like, but getting there. my split times were about 1:25 for the 500 free, 1:20 for the 400 pull, and 1:15 w/Agility paddles. around 1:30-1:35 when I mixed in breast.

I did tons of walking (10-15 miles a day), swam just once. there actually is an outdoor heated pool in Helsinki, but I didn't feel like braving the mid-20sF temps (with snow), and pay the E20 for it. after I got back I was on the gym treadmill and felt a pop in my left foot. so I took things off/very slow for about a week. been elevating/icing, basically babying it as much as I could. I've been through enough injuries that I know how to deal with these sorts of things. At this point I'd say I'm nearly recovered, pain is maybe a 1 or 2 out of 10.
Saturday afternoon solo swim @ Sendero Springs 700 w/u, with a smattering of breast and back 3 x 100 kick @ 1:50, w/board and fins. 50 dolphin/50 flutter 4 x 100 @ 1:35, w/fins. 25 drill/25 swim/25 back/25 free 4 x 50 @ :50, w/fins. 25 back dolphin kick/25 back 12 x 100 @ 1:30 100 easy free 4 x 50 @ :50, 25 free/25 breast 200 pull w/Catalyst paddles + buoy 200 w/d TTL: 3500 yards hadn't swum at Sendero for 2 weeks and I was really looking forward to swimming outside. there's just something about being outside, especially versus an indoor gym pool. evidently I wasn't alone in that; while I had the pool to myself for 10-15 min when I started, by the time I finished there were 5 others. too bad it clouded up, I was hoping to get a little sun. I wanted to do a bunch of 100s, can't remember the last time I did that. I felt like I could have just kept going.... held around 1:20 for those, a little faster toward the end. doing a set like that outside makes a big difference with fresh air.

I've swum outside in that before, but really didn't want to, so I went to the gym then. but there really was no excuse this morning, air temp was 45F, and I was really looking forward to an outside swim. oh well, better gym pool than nothing. I've swum every day this year so far! but Mon, Tues, and Thurs were just short swims after running and lifting. this set felt pretty good. I've been doing sets with a base distance and different sets mixing that up...today was 600. I think Wed was 500. Hope everyone had a great holiday season!
solo swim @ gym pool (SCY) 1000 w/u (whoops, didn't mean to do that much) 6 x 50 @ :55 kick w/fins + board. 25 dolphin/25 flutter 6 x 100 @ 1:30, w/fins. 25 drill/25 swim/25 drill/25 swim main sets: 4 x 100 @ 1:30 400 pull @ 6:00, w/Catalyst paddles + buoy 4 x 100 @ 1:30 2 x 200 @ 3:00, w/Agility paddles 4 x 100 @ 1:30 200 w/d TTL: 4100 yards this pool has just 2 lanes. there was a guy in 1 lane so I jumped in the other (which I prefer). toward the end of my kick set, another guy came and asked if he could share with me. I said so long as he stayed near the wall. surprisingly he did, we didn't get in each others' way, and he was still there when I left. he wasn't fast, but definitely persistent. anyway, I did a similar set on Wednesday, but with 500s (4 rounds), and I had a much more difficult time with 1:30 interval. today I held 1:22, maybe even 1:18 on that last round. I normally swim at Sendero Springs, but that pool was only open 11-5 this week, not open for morning swim. so I swam at the gym; not ideal, but better than nothing. and at least there's a HUGE pace clock (I can even see from the other side). for the year I'm just shy of 368 miles. I'll probably swim tomorrow and bring that up to 370. I dropped my swimming a bit this year, a little purposely, a little due to illness and travel. my goal this year was to drop some weight, and I lost about 25 pounds. for me, that just doesn't happen from only swimming, so I added in some treadmill running at the gym and weights. for those who may have read my blog years ago, I did some insane double daily workouts back then. I didn't want to do that now, so I just dropped back my swimming a bit to squeeze in the gym.

I can't remember where I found the inspiration for this set...I think i poached the w/u set from a blog I saw yesterday. I wanted them all to be 300s, but I goofed on the pull. it was bright enough for me to start seeing the pace clock when I did the 200s (well could mostly make it out).
Wednesday AM solo swim @ Sendero 700 w/u 3 x 100 kick, alternating 25 dolphin/25 flutter (fins + board) 4 x 100, 25 dolphin kick on back, 25 flutter kick on back, 50 back (fins) 4 x 100, 25 drill, 25 swim, 25 drill, 25 swim main sets, 3 rounds: --4 x 100 (with a 25 breast moving from last 25 to first) --200 swim w/Agility paddles 100 easy 200 pull, with buoy + Catalyst paddles 200 w/d TTL: 4100 yards-- Backstroke: 200 yards Breaststroke: 350 yards Freestyle: 3050 yards (plus kicking) I was the first person there today, and there was 1 other guy there starting just after me. air temp was chilly, but water was nice and warm. I moved quickly into and out of the water. since the time change away from DST, I've had a little bit of light in the last 20 min or so of my workout, so I'm able to see the analog pace clock and I'll do the last bits on intervals. I thought I'd mind not doing all of my swims on intervals, having a clock, but it actually isn't too bad. I've been swimming solo at Sendero M-W-F mornings for about the past month, since my group fell apart. I'm still going to the gym (24 Hour in Round Rock) on Tues/Thurs mornings. here's a quick look at what I do there: --45-50 min on treadmill, walk/jog --various stretching/planks/legs --either a chest/triceps or back/biceps day (2 sets of each) --abs --short warm-down swim
AM solo swim @ Sendero Springs pool (25 yards) w/u: 600 transition sets: 200 kick, alternating 25 dolphin/25 flutter 300, 25 drill/25 swim 4 rounds of: * 500, done 100 moderate/25 fast * 100 breast 200 pull 200 w/d TTL: 4000 well the group I swam with was out of a pool. the coach invited us to try the masters group at the local Y, which I did on Friday. it is indoors, which should have been my first clue. anyway, I really wanted to like it, and had a decent set. but I had breathing problems which caused high heart rate, etc. they have panels on the roof that can retract (only one panel was retracted) and garage-type doors on the sides (all were closed). it is a Y...stuffy stale air, water that is too warm... so I decided I'd mostly just swim at Sendero. it is so close to home. there is a pace clock, but it is analog, and there's no lights on it. so in the morning, I can't see it. I figured I'd try no clock for a while and see how it goes. oddly, I kept times almost exactly what I would have planned to if I used a clock. 7:30 for the 500s and 2:00 for the 100 breast. my Apple watch did a decent job of breaking my set down for me. I may swim with AquaTex periodically if I get a craving for a group and intervals. after Friday at the Y, I did swim both Sat and Sun. just about 40 min on Sat, 2300, then 3500 on Sun, about an hour. at least when I swim on weekends, it is during the day, so I can see the clock
