Also never have I trained LCM and then tapered for a SCY meet (but done it plenty of times the other way around!). But I also have never gotten the chance to swim a 200 FL fresh. The 200 always seemed to fall at the end of a meet, when I was already tired. My goal was to break the 2:00 barrier, and at the 170 yard mark, I was still on target. Alas, the heat finally withered me down the stretch. While it may have kept me from hitting my goal time, it would not deny me a lifetime best. At thirty-five years young, I will take a best time in the 200 yard FL. In a couple months, hopefully I get a chance to race indoors, and I KNOW I can close out those last 30 yards! Total: 2100 (including warm-ups and warm-down)

I tried to be strong and fast on the opening 50, but without the legs and dialing back the turnover. At the 50 turn, I came off the wall and pounded the legs for the middle 100. Then I just tried to bring it home. The race was great and I am happy with the time and the splitting, but wish I had more opening speed (a theme to be repeated today). Lifetime best is only 1:49.9, so this wasn't far off. 600 EZ (100 swim/100 kick w/ BD) w/ SNKL 300 swim 2x50 @ :10 rest BR kick w/ BD 2x25 @ :15 rest BR pull w/ paddles 2x25 @ :15 rest BR swim w/ fingertip SP 4x25 @ :15 rest V.S. BR 100 BR - 1:01.95 (29.21/32.74) - So this was my first 100 yard breaststroke in almost 6 years. As I expected, especially with the lack of top speed BR I have been doing in practice, my walls were awful. Pullouts felt great, but I mistimed all four walls. I also had bad opening speed again, definitely a bigger deal for a race as short as this. I was definitely happy to be 1:01. It gives me a glimmer of hope that with work, I could maybe dip back under 1:00 again. This race was EASILY a 1:00 swim if I had nailed all four walls. 100 EZ Total: 2700 SHOUT OUT: Trip, Doug, and Dr. J on some great swims. What this drop taper tells me is that I definitely have some speed potential with rest. I had only just felt like I was hitting my peak training speed again before I backed off. Definitely excited about what I can do with a full taper. However this may be my only chance to taper, much less race, short course yards this season. My main focus will be the LCM summer season!

I knew I was going to hurt anyways the last 75 meters, and figured if I wanted to try and win the damn thing, I was going to have to go out hard and build a lead. Well it sort of worked. I was out 3 seconds ahead of the pack at the 200, but I paid somewhat for my aggressive opening 200 on the last 40 meters. All in all, the best swim of the weekend, hands down. I can't complain about dropping over 3 seconds from my lifetime best in this event at my age. Now for a few weeks of easy kicking to let my shoulder heal, and then on to SCY season! Total: 1500

Did not manage to keep the momentum going from the front 400. Ended up a few seconds off my best. AM LCM @ M. E. Lyons YMCA "Summer Cuda Classic" Day #1 It is amazing what a week of heavy training will do to you. Here I was, a week ago, with only a minuscule amount of rest, sprinting like a champ. Today, back to my regular middle distance repertoire, I felt like I was swimming through soup. 200 BK - 2:51.55 (1:21.67/1:29.88) - I lost my legs big time on the back 100. Not only did I lack a kick, but my legs felt like I was dragging two cinder blocks through the water. 200 FR - 2:19.71 (1:07.79/1:11.92) - Again with the no legs. My freestyle has felt like it had a spring in its step all week, but today, when it came time to race, it just felt sluggish. 400 FR - 4:59.66 (1:11.19/1:16.42/1:17.32/1:14.73) - First of all I had to wait FOREVER to swim this event. I had great walls and found myself grabbing a little more water than I did on the 200, but again, felt sluggish. Also not sure which genius decided to schedule the 200 FR and 400 FR back to back. Continued with the theme for the back half of this meet: strictly sprinting! Not much to say about this race other than I am still not a backstroker, regardless of distance! 50 FL - 28.51 - Had a great start and breakout, but faded down the stretch with my turnover. Was very happy to be well under 29 seconds. 100 BR - 1:14.52 (34.2/40.3) - Great first 50, but lost my form on the second 50. Head started to move around and my hips started to ride too low in the water. Would have loved to have gotten the Sectional cut (1:13.69), but at least I know I can definitely get it when fully rested (if I choose to swim it). 200 Medley Relay - BR - 30.70 - Clock may have been wrong on this one. Certainly did not feel like a 30-point! By this point, my hip flexors were so sore from all the sprint breaststroke this weekend. I locked up really badly, and without that extra wall on the last 25 (in SCY and SCM), my stroke unraveled swiftly. Tells me I am not quite in shape enough to pull off a great 200 FL. 400 EZ (500 assorted warm up before 50 BR) 50 BR - 32.75 - So back in the day, I used to boss around the kids in this event. It was the event I won at several league championships each summer during college, and when I didn't win it, I was runner-up by a very slim margin to an eventual YMCA national champion. After going a 35.5 a few weeks ago at the end of a power/speed workout, I was looking to be 34 low or maybe 33 high. I was first off the blocks with a great start and then nailed my pullout and breakout stroke. After that I new it was going to be a good swim, but was very surprised to see 32.75 on the scoreboard. Was long on my finish. That was the only disappointment from the race. Well, that and the fact that I have to swim as exhibition at this meet, and I ended up winning the event by nearly half a second, so I actually didn't win it 600 EZ (100 swim/100 kick w/ BD) w/ SNKL Total: 3700
PM LCM @ Miami (OH) University "Summer Classic" Day #1 Up in Cincinnati to visit my folks for the next three weeks. They take the kids, and I have my own mini training camp with my coach. But before that begins, it's time to see how I do with a TINY bit of rest. Throwing on the tech suit for some races since I am at an amazing facility that I am very intimate with, having competed at the Corwin M. Nixon Aquatic Center on the campus of Miami University for nearly a quarter century! Did a LONG easy warm up after not swimming yesterday and driving 10 hours to get to Cincinnati. Did some fine tuning in the warm-up pool right before my swim. 400 I.M. - 5:18.78 (30.70/36.49/44.03/43.89/44.25/45.87/37.22/36.33) - Well the first 50 of FL felt like the easiest 30.7 of my life. Felt very in control. Definitely felt the training and limited rest on the back half of the race. Had great walls, but for the most part, the speed isn't there yet (that is to be expected). AM LCM Solo @ LRRC "Trying to get a feel for the water again" PM LCM @ UALR "End of School Year Invitational" Day #2 So all my travels brings me finally to today! After flight delays put me back in Little Rock close to 10:00 last night, and with plans to race Saturday afternoon, I needed to hit the water early to loosen up, so I was up at 6:30 this morning for a wake up swim. Given the week off and feeling under the weather still. I lost my walls on the last 150 meters, but I am definitely glad I swam this morning. I already felt myself catching the water better this afternoon than I was this morning. I was only 3.8 seconds off my lifetime best from last summer. 150 EZ Total: 1250
AM LCM @ UALR "Spring Splash Invitational" Day #3 400 swim 4x100 @ 1:50 k/sw/dr/bld odd: FR even: BR 2x 50 SMOOTH 25 DIVE FAST 25 EZ 200 FR - 2:13.55 (1:04.35/1:09.20) - Felt pretty good on this swim. I was about .4 off what I went shaved and tapered last July. Splits for that swim were 1:03/1:10. So I see where I had that easier front end speed last year, but I was still out of shape and hurt coming home. Today, I was out a little slower, but definitely felt more in control on the back half. 200 BR - 2:44.21 (1:18.90/1:25.31) - So this was my first time racing any breaststroke since last June (when I raced the 100 and went 1:19), and the first time in over six years that I had contested the 200M BR! As can be seen, I was actually faster on my front 100 than I was last year when I raced the 100. It felt really good to be racing BR again, but still not sure how long my groin will hold up. Total: 2700 I was pleasantly surprised with my overall performance this morning. I was out until 1:30 am at a Cinco de Mayo party, and while I don't go in for the whole "getting drunk" thing anymore, I still drank quite a bit over a long period of time given that I planned to swim this morning. I think the going to bed super late hurt me more than anything, but since this was not a taper level meet, I wasn't overly concerned with my pre-meet ritual!

I was pleasantly surprised that I was faster than I was in early December (1:55.30), and that swim was coming off a taper (I still had almost no hair growth back) and had that "smooth, easy speed" feel still lingering. The big difference, in hindsight, was definitely my mental effort in the race. In December, I was in the mix with some of the senior level boys and they went out so fast and I got caught up in THEIR race and just spun my wheels. This time I was more controlled on the opening 75 yards, and while I flipped last at the 50, by the 100, I was in second place for good in my heat. 600 EZ (100 swim/100 kick w/ BD) w/ SNKL Total: 2600

Probably why this is my least favorite freestyle distance to race. 600 EZ (100 FR/100 kick w/ BD) w/ SNKL 500 FR - 5:11.98 28.46/31.07 (59.53) 31.58/31.70 (1:03.28) 31.65/31.86 (1:03.51) 31.74/31.99 (1:03.73) 31.28/30.65 (1:01.93) This race was 25 minutes after my 200. I was stuck in third gear until the last 75 yards. Did not feel like I died though. I felt good throughout the race. The age groupers on either side of me shot off to fast starts. This was nice because it forced me to just swim my own race, and by the 200, I had reeled them in and passed them. He got one extra heat of the 200 to rest since he was the heat before me. He was a VERY respectable 2:02/5:37 (the latter was a new Arkansas Masters record). Doug also simultaneously swam an amazing 50 FR and a terrible 200 FR. He was going for a 50 split (23.60). I am not sure he would want me to post his overall 200 FR time here, and honestly it took so long for him to finish I lost interest in the race and stopped paying attention

However, the less than 12 hour turnaround from my 1650 really came back to bite me on the last 60 yards. I haven't pushed my limits nearly as much as I need to training butterfly, but will be doing a lot more going forward. Not unhappy with the swim, because it's great that I am going as fast as I was 5 years ago in this event, and my lifetime best is only 2:02. So yeah, I was feeling great until about the 800. I felt the shift, and the wheels start to loosen on the bus. The splits just confirm what I felt. I haven't swam that event in over 20 years, and that was certainly my first ever 1650 that I voluntarily entered. My goal time in April is 16:49. The swim gives me hope, but I have A LOT of work still to do!
