Research presented at The Obesity Society Annual Meeting in Los Angeles found that a night of sleep deprivation affects insulin sensitivity to a similar degree as 6 months of a high fat diet in obese dogs. We don’t know if the same applies to humans from this study. But we can extrapolate that lack of sleep can affect insulin sensitivity of the cells. Human studies have shown that poor sleep is associated with weight gain. Getting adequate sleep is one of many factors that can prevent diabetes.
